300 game or 800 series???
« on: March 20, 2008, 09:27:19 PM »
So my good friend on my team shoots 300 tonight(650 series) and all night was throwing it in my face cause I haven't rolled a 300 yet. He has a 192 average, me a 210...I have (5) 700 series and an 805 this year...he's trying to say that rolling a 300 is harder than getting an 800 series. I said, how can shooting 300 be more difficult than averaging 268 for 3 games...so, what would you rather have? and which do you think is harder to accomplish???

I only find cases like that funny where the lane is playing exactly the same way. I had a teammate like that this year. He shot 268 his first game and wound up with  a 550 series. And believe, it wasnt because of carry down, or a transition, or anything like that, he just started to miss his mark, and converted 1 spare the whole second game.

IMO an 800 would be tougher. You've got to have 3 great games to hit that 8, one good game for the 3.

I just shot my very first 300 game last night (Thurs.) and I have to say, it takes a lot of skill for a 300, and some luck is needed as well, but 800 is something that takes a lot more skill & luck and that is my next goal!  A 300 game is quite an achievement, but an 800 series is just so hard to get being there are alot more variables you have to overcome like the lanes changing, the line breaking down, and the ball working perfectly for 36 frames!  Now that I have my 300 game under my belt, now I'll be working on my 800!

The 800 every time, It is the measure of a good bowler, The 300 even if you hit the pocket 36 times there has to be luck involved. A 160 avg bowler can bowl 300 but not have a chance for 800. IMHO

800 is definately the greater accomplishment. If I never shot 300 again I wouldn't care as long as I was able to get my couple of 800's each year.

I think an 800 is tougher, but I also think 300 is the one number in bowling all bowlers shoot for.  It's perfection and nothings better than that.

I once had the opportunity to sit and talk with Earl Anthony and he had an 800 ring on. I asked if I could look at it and he took it and said "300 is great but this is what takes the most skill". I think he's right. I've seen many 300s shot and some have been done by lower average guys or guys who had a few lucky strikes. No low average guy is going to shoot 800 and a few lucky shots won't help much when trying to get 800.

Absolutely the 800 series.  It has to be so much tougher to put together 3 games.  Lanes also change more over 3 games than 1.  You have to adjust.  800 will be extremely difficult to get.

I was fortunate to get my 800 last year. And by far it's
harder to get then a 300. Actually, I shot 842 and then
the following week I shot 819. But haven't come close since.

He shot 190, 160, then 300...talk about inconsistent...

He only shot 650?  What happened the other two games?  He can have his 300.  I'd take that in league.  Let him shoot 300 one game, but if he posts a couple 175's the other two and we take two out of three games and total . . yay for him.  As you can see . . 300 is more of a number for you to take pride in.  Saying you got a 300 nowadays doesn't mean a whole lot to anybody else, but for you and your close friends, there's that sense of accomplishment, and something else to add to the resume.  People still respect 800's.  Here's a suggestion.  Take your buddy out pot bowling since your average is 20 pins higher . . then we'll see where that 300 gets that one game wonder . .

Case in point: 300-199-300=799. I would have traded those last two games for a couple of 250s in a heartbeat.

I hear that loud and clear!! Ten years ago, I shot 300-186(AHH!)-299, and to date I still don't have an 800 series. I get grief from my friends about it every so often. I've got 10 300's and I'd trade 5 of them for an 800 series in a heartbeat!!

There are 15 (I think?) 300's at my home center this year, zero 800's. My vote goes for the 800 being tougher.

I believe in Gardner this season there are 25 300's this season and 10 800's. I have friends who have been able to put up their first 800's this season (one of them had 2 800's in 3 weeks), but I've yet to throw one. I've had 6 790's (last season I ended with a 798) and I've had 3 300's in the past 2 years so I would consider an 800 the more difficult accomplishment. You can put up 31 strikes in 36 frames and if you have one open or string them the wrong way, you still will not shoot 800.
