A little help, please?
« on: February 27, 2008, 01:26:06 AM »
I am a girl bowler and I don't get a lot of hook to my ball, so I've been cupping my hand in to get a better rotation on my ball.  About 5 months ago, I went up in weight, from 13 to 14.  I never really had a problem with my wrist being weak lately, because I've gotten used to the feeling.  But I have been noticing that it's hurting a bit more after my first game.  After my first game, I can't cup my wrist in anymore and when i twist my wrist in the air, it cracks and makes disgusting noises...

So does anyone know what I could do, so I don't hurt myself? Also, do you think it might be the weight factor?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank YOU!

If you aren't using a wrist brace, I'd suggest talking to the pro shop operator to see if they'll let you try one out for a few games.

Edit: A brace that has adjustable positions so you can replicate the cupping without straining.

My wrists have always made those cracking noises... welcome to the club

Without seeing you bowl, it's really hard to pass comment, however, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that pain isn't good.
It's likely that your muscles aren't strong enough to comfortably achieve the motion you're attempting, and as a result stress is being transferred to the soft tissue around your wrist.
If you don't mind the question, what kind of height/build are you? I imagine the actual weight isn't an issue, as most women are capable of handling a 14 lb ball. You don't need to cup the ball to make it hook. Sure it works, but is a lot of unnecessary effort. The most effective way to hook the ball is to hold the wrist straight and in the 4 o'clock position. When you're happy with this, start to learn to rotate the ball by pushing your thumb into your palm. As this feeling becomes more natural you can bring your hand more under the ball, the thumb to palm motion giving you enough turn to get around the side of the ball.

Good Luck!

What ball do you throw out of curiousity?  I have found that a wrist brace can help, I have the Pro Release (size: med).  It will ease the stress on your wrist on top of keeping it straight.  Focusing more on a nice firm wrist thoughout your release and less on cupping will serve you better in the long run though.  If you are having to "force", or create the hook, than more than likely your are using a ball that isn't meant to do it or have an improperly drilled ball for your bowling style.

I am really appreciating all of the replies!

To clear up some questions...

I'm 5'1" and really petite. I'm thinking, I can't handle the weight anymore and it's putting too much strain on my wrist..? Maybe?

And I'm throwing a 14 lb ogre pearl.

Thanks again!

As I said crzy, it's probably not the weight so much as what you're trying to "do" with the ball.

If you focus on trying to generate hook through good technique (the smaller you are physically, the better your technique needs to be) Diandra Asbaty is a good model, for a small woman who doesn't suffer with a lack of hook. If you're an adult, even with a very slight build, 14 lb shouldn't be an issue unless you're creating stress (as it sounds like you are)

Brace may help, but to me, sounds like you are using to heavy a ball for your wrist/arm/hand. Either try to build up your wrist with some exercises or drop a pound in ball and see if it happens then. If it does, better get used to it, it's the action of your hand/wrist. If it stops, then it's the weight of the ball being more than your wrist wants to deal with.

If all else fails, see a Dr., than in it's self might not be a bad idea if the wrist continues to pop and hurt.

yea a wrist brace will help.  if you use the brace and keep bowling and it still hurts then move back down to 13.  Also try doing wrist exercises with light weights at home to help your wrist get used to it.

Get a 5 lb dumb bell and do wrist curls to strengthen the wrist. It's very easy to hurt tendons in your wrist, then you'll be confined to a brace FOREVER. They make a good support that looks like a sweat band. works well too.  Good luck

too lazy to read all the other's posts

don't cup wour wrist.... just keep it "solid".
I don't know what you mean with "cup" ... is the angle between hand and armaround 180° or more towards 90° . The later I would call a cup the 180° a "normal" and anything beyond 180° open wirst

you do not need to cup your wrist to get rotation and reaction... it is more a matter of releasing the ball correct (watch some of the pros)

and I also suggest talking to someone with some experience bowling WITHOUT a wrist brace... I am a follower of the thesis that wrist braces are only necessary if you have a weak wrist. But I see so many "manly" man around here... big heavy guys... some even work as construction workers etc. and wear wrist braces

Ron Clifton's advice:

about ball weight

most important: WRIST TEST (also ball weight!)

Hope it helps
