A little rant from Brian Voss
« on: December 10, 2006, 01:12:55 PM »
This is a post that Brian Voss made on the PBA.com message boards. I figured this would be of interest to some of you:

"Bowling is in dire straits. Some don’t heed the signals, but they are quite obvious. It is time for change. Drastic change. In my opinion, the cards are in the hands of the PBA . All other competitive bowling entities would and should follow the rules set forth by the best players in the world. Unfortunately, the best players in the world have NO say in how this game is played. What is represented right now is inadequate. It is failing, and will continue to fail. Having said that, the following is what I would do if it was in my power:

The first thing I would is change the scoring environment. The first step in that is to change the equipment that is used. There has already been much discussion on the negative influence that the new equipment has brought to our sport, so there is no reason to expand on that subject. I would completely alter the specifications for todays balls used in competition. Limiting the specs similar to a Blue Dot is the first choice. The depth of that idea leaves open a lot of discussion as to how to compensate the players for using this equipment. I won’t get into that depth.

The second thing I would do is develop patterns that will be used on a weekly basis. 7 qualifying games would mean 7 patterns. Using only one type of ball would restore creativity, imagination, and integrity into the sport. The process of using only one pattern for an entire week has a lot of open holes in it. The intent of any tournament environment should be to produce the best players, not the ones who “fit” into a certain circumstance.

The third thing I would do is to conduct the Pro-Am the day before the actual tournament. Mandating that professionals remain in the city for as much as two days to bowl a pro-am as we are currently required to do is unprofessional, and does not allow players the luxury of recuperating after the grind of a tournament. It also takes away time from the ability of maintaining a good healthy relationship with family. The tour should not be that desperate to put the importance of a pro-am ahead of the desires and needs of the professional.

And fourth, I would send out a message to all bowling entities that what we are doing is long over due, and is a change needed for the survival of this great sport. The continued decline in USBC membership, the decline in competitive bowling, the decline in global competition, and the decline in our ratings cannot happen.

My tenure on tour is nearing an end. Most of the reasons are because of the inability of our governing bodies to make needed change. Quite frankly, I am sick of it. The decline in prize funds is hollowing to say the least. The recent allowance of walled up lanes, combined with an infinite choice in arsenal, is more distant than ever from what it takes to measure talent. I am not alone. There are others on tour, some prominent players, who have had enough. SAVE OUR SPORT!!!"

i agree with alot he is saying except the part about the balls being made today.....they need to do something....i believe they have the wrong people running the usbc....usbc needs fresh ideas rasing the fee every year doesnt work for me and a lot of bowlers...if i got to pay 20 next year i'm quting that league and join another league under 20 dollars....But if i bowled on synthethics instead of old old old woodlanes then i might be incline to pay 20,+ they have to lay more oil down...we don't get much oil here. maybe if they went arpund forcing old bowling ally to update thier equipent, but something on top of the wood lanes, maybe give houses discount if they updated with synthetics. somethings gotta give who feels my pain.

I still think the different equipment add another level of skill to the sport, being able to put the right ball in your hands on the right condition adds another level difficulty to the game.

The conditions do need change, these easy as.s house conditions have to go. I don't even plan on bowling leagues next year because there are no sport leagues in my area.

How is there any kind of logical link between new technology and the decline in bowling???? I have yet to figure this out. Yeah, soft shots are in most houses but, to me that makes bowling more appealing for people and thus, they would bowl more often.

No doubt the USBC is a joke and totally out of touch with the sport they are supposed to represent. There needs to be a BIG shake up at the USBC.

I think for the most part Voss is crying and moaning becasue he is not effective on tour anymore. Cant run with the big dogs, stay on the porch. You are possibly past your prime Voss and you didnt keep up with everyone else.

I agree on the walled up shots, get rid of them!50ft med oil with a heavy oob from 10-0.I think this shot would limit most to less agressive balls and promote accuray.

universal ball is just stupid, oil the lanes 60 feet and problem solved!

but something that Voss said is right, about that some players is only good on certain patterns.

I think the pro tour has been great to watch this year.

Walter shooting 289 when breaking 200 for the other competitors was a feat!

Norm Duke sitching tactics and balls and nailing a big move in a must win situation.

Wes Malott's talent...Doug Kent's big win!

Sean Rash's super throwin!

The tour is exciting on TV this year!

What takes the bloom off is the low money!  Embarrassing...

I think the exempt tour is taking away the possibility of profit and excitement(bowlers bowling for big money!)...No money for Tony Reyes super 300....you've got to be kidding me!

Demographics, lifestyle changes in comparison to the 40s, 50s, and 60s and seriousness in men's leagues for casual bowlers is killing bowling!

Integrity of previous scoring and maintaining yesterday's scoring continues to be a low priority for over 99% of the bowlers in this country!

The sadness of the protour as a minor sport heading to nonexistance or super minor is frankly...just sad!

Useless drivel. All this would do is drive the younger bowlers away. People are too used to the high scoring, huge board crossing ebvironment. If you were to limit the ball reaction and level the oil you can bet on losing 60% of the sanctioned bowlers within two years.

USBC and bowling in general need to promote MORE towards the youth. what I think bowling should stop doing Telecasts on SUNDAY trying to compete with FOOTBALL. IS THE AVG guy going to watch FOOTBALL for his FAV team or BOWLING and not know WHO THEY ARE??

What I think PBA should do is put the telecasts on a bigger Network, NOT on a normal day when foot ball or any big show is ON, and put it more near PRIME TIME when more people are home watching. I mean come on, Are they really losing ratings when taking out a Show "frasier" or "everybody loves raymond" FOR a PBA Telecast? Just my 2 cents.
