Am I wrong to treat my summer fun league this way?
« on: July 06, 2007, 01:14:35 AM »

I joined a self described "fun" league this summer. It has been somewhat
a really messed up league, sometimes no oil at all, kids running around,
lanes that break down, someone that turns off the lanes 3-4 frames before
we finish for the night,..etc.... you get th idea.

When I joined the "fun" I decided to use it as "practice" - i.e., not worry
about score and try to improve my game.

I like pearl equipment - so I've been mostly using particle/solid.
I'm a tweener - but been mostly stroking a game, then moving way in and trying to crank.
I only try to "score" the second game.
Been using a convential drill 1964 rubber ball spare ball (mostly)
Been working on straight only spare shooting.
Play one game fingers all in, then next pinky in - index way out.
I struggle with timing, so I've been closing my eyes and trying to feel where my timing is for a portion of a game.

Anyway, I think you get the idea....

So I guess my question is, is this fair to my team?  I'm feeling guilty as
I missed a 10 pin working on my ultra straight spare shooting last night
costing us a point.

Does your team know that you're using the league to practice different techniques, or do they have the natural expectation that you will do the best you can (score-wise)at every session?
Sounds like a possible communications issue.
I personally wouldn't mind, as long as I knew in advance which way you wanted to play.

Open bowling is probably a lot cheaper than league bowling, and league bowling has money on the line.  I don't care if it's a summer league, if you want practice, the bowling alley is open a lot of hours for you to get it in.

I'm not saying don't have fun, don't try to improve.  But I'd be upset about losing because you threw at a 10 pin with your eyes closed and missed.  Losing isn't fun, I don't care if it's the summer and there's $10 on the line or $100.

Since it is a self described “fun” league, as long as your teammates don’t have a problem neither do I.

Now if you come against a team/indvidual you don't like and turn it on that night then I would condsider that sandbagging.

But I would say you should use it to see how things you have practiced on, in true practice, work in league situations.

I can often do things in practice, when trying shot after shot, and no consequences that work well. But when you have to try it once or twice a game over a ½ hour period they are not as easy to repeat.

I  usually ball as an individual in summer i.e. singles leagues but in the past when I have put teams together for a summer league this is the rule I lay down, ''We are bowling for some fun and to practice a little if you want to win find another team''

Willy,

I posted this topic awhile ago. Basically I use the summer league to try new equipment/releases/lines/whatever you want to throw in there. It is not a matter of trying, cause I do try. I try one ball for a game, then another, then another. The next week I might try to stand a different spot and throw a different arrow. But in doing this, I am still averaging in the mid 190's. As far as trying to win, I still try. I joined a league with my wife and another couple. I bowl with the husband during the winter and we are both doing the same thing.
As long as you are happy with what you are doing and it is not really hurting your team, then practice.
As far as lanes being open for practice, that topic has been hashed over numerous times on this board. This price of open bowling is rather high in some areas. I know a center close to me charges over $5.00 a game, but league are only $13.00 a night. So if I went in and bowled 3 games of open bowling, it would cost me $15.00 and I am not sure about the oil pattern that is out there. But on a league night, I know they oiled right before we start, so it is a fresh pattern.

Just, FYI... it is a handicap league and I try to make sure my average
goes up every week.

  It is a $13 a night league (3 games)

Same cost for 3 open play games when I could go to the center $15.

I am always trying to make sure we can win the game. I don't try to cost
us a game if at all possible. In fact, the ten pin miss surprised the heck
out of me. I hit everything I was aiming at - just not the pin. Stand here,
aim there, hit this arrow, reach that point down the lane.... WTF?

And strangley, some of my best shots are when my eyes are closed... can't help
but trust the ball.

Joe, unless each of your team members all threw 300 that game, you can't put the loss on yourself.  You said you were surprised you missed it.  If you had left the 10 and then decided to work on a new release and completely not try to make it, that'd be different.
