Can bowling ever be healthy?
« on: April 28, 2007, 06:23:55 AM »
Here in Nashville we had 31,000 people show up for the Country Music Marathon. The sports of running, cycling, hiking, golf, tennis, walking, disc golf, race walking, badmitton, volleyball etc... all in the past few years marketed themselves as healthy activity.

With one bill after another in congress regulating smoking, and insurance companies cracking down hard on smokers, overeaters, couch potato's, and sedentary lifestyle people, why is the USBC and Bowling still doing nothing?

The sponsors for the PBA tour include Denny's which is known for bad food containing lard, fat, sugar, unknown grease, partially hydrogenated vegtable oils,  and lot's of sodium. It is one of the few fast food restaurants that still allow smoking.

At the marathon today, world class athletes gave their support like former Titan/cowboy Eddie George. How many pro bowlers were here? None!

The point being is this, Bowling is the ONLY sport that still supports alcohol, cigarettes, fast food, and unhealthy living because the USBC, PBA and other bowling entities have never marketed itself as a game that allows for hand eye coordination, strength, stretching and stamina over the normal 3 game league.

Bowling needs to wake up! It is not leagues, $4.00 a game, $300 bowling balls, or lane maintenance costs that have hurt bowling! It is the fact bowling alleys are so unhealthy, dirty, and undesirable for the under 40 generation that value health and fitness.

When I practiced last Sunday, two college age lesbians were making out and feeling each other up next to me, 3 old out of shape ladies in their 50's and 60's were smoking solid for two hours, a poor looking woman allowed her 5 kids to run around screaming trying to get people to buy candy for their school(they ran up to me while I was on the approach), and a couple of hip hop kids were smoking cigars and cursing the whole time, and a couple of redneck boys wearing cowboy hats while bowling were drinking and spilling beers while eating mounds of French fries.

The few families that were there walked out when they saw the lesbians locking lips.

That is why bowling is dead!

Bowling needs to market itself as a healthy activity, not a place were lesbians can make out and rednecks can get drunk.

You are so right.

Unfortunately, we now live in a society that lacks morals; in your face with all ugliness.

Most people's attitudes and ways are repugnant.

Bringing a good family to a bowling center can become a detrimental experience, and because of sights such as those you've mentioned, this game of ours is turning away potential recruits because they perceive, and correctly so, that spending time in a bowling alley, though the game can be fun, because of the resident creatures should be avoided at all costs.

Unless somehow a great savior comes along to promote bowling in a better light, I think eventually bowling will be all but be doomed.

The sport I love constantly gets a bad rap, it is because proprietors fail to see the big picture. Where I live is obviously the Bible belt. Although I am not a conservative Christian, more of a liberal Christian, there is an untapped goldmine out there. There are thousands of churches, civic groups, and other organizations that would love a bowling outing.

There is a group called "Team Green" They are liberals like me who love sport and a clean environment. They meet a couple of times a  month and bowl for a few hours as a fund raiser. They drink beer, but they do not smoke and they conduct themselves in a professional manner.

I don't mind a couple of beers now and then, but when it becomes a free for all, it hurts the sport.

I would love to see the PBA sponsored by Subway or Quiznos that sell good sandwiches. I would love to see a PBA bowler on one of those ESPN commercials that are so funny, and I would love to see competitive bowling come alive again.

Tennessee should have its smoking ban soon, and bowling proprietors need to come up with a way to take advantage of that.

How about a membership fee like a golf club? Pay $250 a year and get all bowling for $2.00 a game. Get prizes and free games for booking groups and large parties that are not smoker and excessive drinker parties.

There has to be a way to save our sport! It is not too late!

If Nashville can get 31,000 people out to run, how about that many for a big tournament promoting health and fitness!

All the centers in Minneapolis are non-smoking thanks to a city wide smoking ban in restaurants and places that serve liquor. Aside from that though my fave center is well run, clean and attracts a pretty good crowd for open bowling after league. Most of these open bowlers are in the 16 to 25 year old range and only very, very occasionally is there ever a problem with unruly behavior (almost always attributable to having "one too many").

The fact is, every center I've ever bowled in-in Minnesota has been clean and well kept. I guess we're just lucky that way. We take our bowling seriously and many centers are run by hall of famers or people with rich histories in the bowling world.

Another point, in "my center" there is no cosmic bowling, only leagues and open bowling. It had the HIGHEST lineage last year of all the metro area centers (and it's only 24 lanes). I guess that says something about running a center based on promoting "small town familiarity" in a metro area of 1 million plus. People are very loyal here and appreciate quality products and service.

We recently had a gang murder in our center. A guy was shot and killed. The police left the scene too early, they were warned something was going to happen with gang activity in the area.

I must say that in my are most of the centers are well mintained and the people frequenting them are a pretty good group of people.

My home center has birthday parties, but the only time I can't get a lane for practice is when there is a tournament or a large group has reserved the lnes, usually for a fund raiser.

Smoking is not an issue due to a long time state ban on smoking in public areas.

The center where the gang murder took place is right across the street from the West Nashville police sector! However, there has been a new shopping center built, and new restaurants coming in along with condo's and a park. The whole area is having a renaissance if you will. Urban revitalization is happening in this area and maybe that will help with crime.

The state smoking ban happens soon, and that may curb some of the near' do wells from coming in just to smoke and "hang out".

Most of the places by me are very clean.  There are a couple dirty ones still around but those are AMF and not many people go to those.

I agree with almost all of your ideas. Why not all?

Because a homophobic way of life has nothing to do with any kind of sports. Would you like a marketing like "Bowling the 100% Lesbian and Gay free sport"? How you guarantee that? Only mixed Teams or what?
I think you would call me straight as i have a wife and no homosexual intentions, but still this have nothing to do with if i am a sportsman or not.

Leonidas,

I think you miss the above point; families with kids found the above a repulsive and disgusting environment for their children to be around.

This is not the same thing as gay bashing, for if a man and a woman were equally demonstrative around children, the reaction of these children's parents would probably be similar.

Adults should act like adults, and have some respect for others, including children, when it comes to wanton acts (kissing has many forms, and from the description above, it sounds much more than innocent); there's a right place for such things, and a "family bowling center" is not it.

OK if thats the point i miss it, you are absolutely right! There are some thinks i want to explain first to my kids, before they face them.

By the way, i have to say that i never thought that bowling is a healthy sport. I don't now if more than 4 hours a week would be good for the children or older persons. I don't know how asymmetrical muscular tense over years, without any other sport, would affect a kids spine.

From another point of view i would say bowling is killed by the bowlers too. How many centers invade league players (one or two) to cosmic bowling? They could make a great job by showing to open bowlers a more sportive way in this game. Instead of this i have seen many times so called good bowlers complaining about the open bowlers next lane. What i want to say is there are many reasons why bowling is dying. For some of those we have to blame ourselves.

Thank you reading.
