Disasterous first week of PBA experience
« on: May 13, 2008, 04:19:07 AM »
Not quite sure why I'm posting this, but wow, 149,197,146 for my first night of PBA experience on the Viper pattern.  This coming off of a 218 average in league. haha.  Granted, I'm sure I'll improve as it goes along, but wowwww.  Just a little discouraged.

How did you do shooting spares?

I'll bet you threw some strikes.  Missing the spares will kill you.  Take the lane conditions out of play, go straight at them - use a spare ball if you must - and the condition won't matter.

Oh, and leave your ego at the door!  Considering you man'd up and posted your scores here, I think you've already learned to do that.  Don't get discouraged.  Treat it as a learning experience and you'll benefit from the league.

Keep your head up. My first time I bowled it, I averaged about 168 for 9 games on Chameleon. Then I followed that up with 136 for 9 games on Cheetah.

Viper was my easiest by far, and I also did well on Scorpion and Shark. In all, I got my ending average close to 170, which was a drop of around 18 pins from my THS average at the time.

My two downfalls were spares (shocker there) and other than on Viper, I couldn't string strikes.

This year's league starts tomorrow.
Last year I finished at 174 - "only" 17 off my book average for last year.
The PBA league was fantastic - it pointed out some flaws - most notably my spare game.

I posted averages of 167 and 175 in two PBAX leagues last summer.  About 30-40 pins off my THS average.

Miss by 2-3 boards on THS = Strike, Miss by 2-3 boards on sport pattern = washout or split!

After two weeks on Viper this summer, I'm at 182 and improving.  My goal is average 190+ this summer.

It's a fun challenge and a great way to improve your ability!

For most people, the drop in average comes from not only leaving more difficult spares, but also from converting them.  It was a different story for me.  I actually had a very good conversion rate, but I couldn't strike at all.  You leave enough difficult spares, and you're bound to miss some.  This year-

THS- 226
PBA- 186

Viper was responsible for probably 15 pins off my average.  I despise that pattern

We started on Cheetah this past week, 179, 199, 144, 176

of course it is the easiest of the patterns, but I kept my line the whole night, I was using a Vendetta (drilled stacked) polished with Snake Oil. I was throwing it down the ten the whole night, 3 game I had to more toward the gutter and play 5, but it transitioned back to 10 in game 4.

"difficult spares" - no kidding I had some ugly splits.

a lot of the guys were nervous too, because everyone hypes that you'll be shooting   a 140 average. I just rolled with the punches (or in my case nasty splits)

just be calm and make sure the ball comes off your hand good and you'll be money!

I just played the lanes.  I like that pressure and nervousness it explains my success in tournaments too.  When I am not socializing, that focus is used for the game and the lanes, and then I can score well.

But there's not much you can do with 4 splits!  I had a 157 with 4 open splits last night (but then pulled it out for a 269).  The guy next to me had the front 7 frames 9/.  Crazy stuff, but it's great fun too.

Thanks everyone.  I appreciate it, and yes, spares we absolutely the problem.  After the first game, I had a decent line to the pocket, but kept missing spares.  I think that's what I'm going to work on.  Thanks again,

Tonight is my 3rd year doing PBAX. 1st year in PBAX my average was 165 in 1 house and 179 in another. Last year my average went up slightly, 170 and 181 (same 2 houses). This year average has no meaning to me like it should be anytime I bowl. Im only bowling 1 PBAX leauge this summer and 1 leauge with the house shot. Practice on the harder shots then put it to motion on Thursday nights.

Dont set any goals for yourself on this stuff as it can discourage you to the point you want to quit bowling for good. This happened to me last year and told myself never again will I do that.

1225 on Chameleon last night for me.  Yes, we bowl 6 games a night on this league!  635 the first set and 590 the second.  Capped off the night with a 169.

I just ran out of gas and couldn't make good shots.  I'm very happy with how the night went as a whole.

On Thu. PBA League I'm 182 after 8 games (2 weeks) on Viper and on Tue. PBA League I'm 204 after 6 games on Chameleon.

My goal is to finish at 190+ on both leagues.

I'm bowling on two 2-ball challenge PBAx leagues around here.  Twisted Fury and Sidewinder + Spare ball are the only balls we can use.  The two houses play completely different, as I found out.  Both leagues start on the Scorpion for 8 weeks, then Viper on last 7 weeks.

First night of my first league, first game, started out with the front 7, so that was fun

Wound up going 254 - 202 - 164 (4-9 in the 10th to lose the game) for a respectable 620 series.

Night two on the other house wasn't as pretty, lol.

177 - 165 - 204 for a 546 series.  Had to make some surface adjustments, and really feel more comfortable than I did before.  I just found it to be surprising how the 41 foot shot could be as playable as it was.  The second house brought a lot of 4-7-9s (4 on the night).

It's fun, something people should definitely try!

Yeah the first couple of weeks are kind of "interesting" but pretty soon you'll be loving it.
