Do bowling center owners hate bowlers?
« on: December 09, 2009, 08:41:28 AM »
Felt a need to rant a bit...

On the plus side, my local bowling center is spending money to make the center look nicer, but they keep making choices that do not make any sense.

First, we got new chairs in the settee area.  We used to have 4 chairs per side and now we get three and a little table.  All leagues I bowl in a four or five man teams, so it must be logical to have three chairs.  And the table is so handy since you are supposed to bring your drinks and food onto the lane with you.

Next, they take out the synthetic approaches and replace them with new synthetic approaches.   I live in a humid area which makes sliding on synthetic a challenge anyway, so they added many seams all over the place which help us slide so much more.

Next, they updated the overhead lights above the lanes with brighter fixtures.  Its a nice inviting look until you try to focus on the lane surface when you see this great reflection and glare bouncing back at you.

Finally the masterwork...we get new ball returns.  The ball returns are 2 1/2 wide than the old ones on each side which is oh so helpful.  And the old returns held 13 balls so they've improved that to 11.  Because all the best bowlers only use one ball.  And everyone loves when a ball goes crashing to the floor and rolling across the center.

I really think that the people at the top of these big bowling chains are so smart!  Its no wonder that league bowling is such a growing sport!

Deosn't really matter what the centers do or don't do to their lanes, or who they decide to cater to or not cater to...league bowlers will always still find something to b1tch about...

I quit bowling in one local house. The manager came to our league meeting. After hearing the bowlers talk about their concerns and wishes, she told us "I don't need you guys, we make our money on open play" and walked out. That league was 28 teams the year I quit. Now it 8 teams. Now, they have redone the place. Put in new synthetic lanes, and are the only house around running a sanctioned PBAX league. I guess they realized how much money they were giving to the other centers.

what you guys seem to forget is the bowling demographic has changed dramatically over the last 10-15 years.  it used to be that centers had a 80% league to 20% open play ratio (some maybe higher), now it's 50/50 for most bowling centers.  what these places are trying to do is enhance the bowling "experience" for the more casual bowler...why do we do this??? so they will become hooked on bowling and join a league or come to the center more frequently than before.

now my center (which my parents own and i work at) put in the brunswick couch furniture with coffee tables in the settee area.  would you ever imagine a bowling center having couches?  of course some people dont like them, but isnt that human nature?? we arent trying to drive league bowlers out, and yes we make more of a premium on open play bowlers but league bowling is our backbone.

you know its funny that everyone has someone to blame about the demise of league bowling, but maybe we should look in the mirror at some of the league bowlers that no matter what have something to complain about at all times.  or the people that ridicule the average league joe, that just comes to drink beer and have fun.

carry on!!

Sorry, but I have to laugh at anyone that thinks the recreational bowler is someone who comes into a bowling alley once a week for a $4-$5 a game marathon.

Let’s see….it takes about 10 minutes to bowl a game.  For that same $5 I can go watch a matinee movie and spend an hour plus.  Sure…food costs money at the movies, but it sure isn’t free at the lanes either!!

Even as a parent who bowls, there is no way I could see going out as a family and paying $3 for shoes, $5 for a game and then another $20 on food and drink.  For 3 games you are looking at close to $70 for maybe an hours worth of fun?  Sorry…..that’s not recreational.

I agree that alleys do make updates to interest the average Joe and perhaps entice them into getting into a league.  If not a league, then perhaps 2-3 times of bowling in a month or so....maybe with friends.

Our alley caters to bowlers and non-bowlers.  There are plenty of leagues that fill up the house.  SASBA is there at least once every two months it seems.  They have travel teams for the guys and girls and there's regional tournaments as well as the City and States held there.

All that participation may not be made up in the lineage....but you add the food, drinks, beer, and equipments bought, it all adds up.

only AMF centers hate you, unless you are an open bowler with lots of cash and do not care how the center treats you.

Wow!  Most of the centers in this area treat the league bowlers pretty good.

One AMF house has free bowling on Sunday mornings for league bowlers.

After my Wednesday league (private house), we can practice for free after league every week.  My kids never pay to practice there!

Open play, recreational bowlers are the money makers.  The "improvements" are not focused on making your league more enjoyable.  They are focused on making the once a week $4+ a game recreational bowlers experience more enjoyable.

This is the answer I am inclined to believe.

I have seen far too much evidence of this to believe anything else is the reason.

No, Most of them:

1) Stand at the counter and demand a lane, even though they know there is waiting list

2) Scream and hollar obcentities at the foul line, when every single ball they throw doesn''t strike...no matter if it hits the head pin or not

3) Abuse employee''s when something doesn''t go their way, whether they are right or wrong.

4) Break equipment on a weekly basis by kicking the ball returns, or slamming their equipment down on the racks, or giving the scorers a nice giant smack.

These are the same bowlers that cry about the integrity of the game and then get bent when they are asked to leave for acting a fool.

PS..I do not work at a center

Nah. I've seen it at Carolier Lanes, here in NJ. It's a large 82 lanes house that's a Brunswick showcase. A few years back they put in new settee areas: tables, chairs and keyboard/monitors kiosks.

For each pair of lanes, one settee is downstairs and one is upstairs. The storage areas in each settee is such that there's room for 2 person's bags and balls, if you have a 4-ball roller (typical for many handicap and scratch leagues). However, for most leagues, there are 4 or 5 people per team. If each team has five 4-ball rollers, there is no room for them, even stacked. If a person has one 2-ball roller and one 3-ball roller (again not unusual), there is utter chaos. Oh, plus each table has 4 chairs, where does the the 5th person or, god forbid, any vistors sit/stand?

This place is a disaster for leagues. It can only have been designed by a non-league bowler for open bowlers.

In the house defense things I've seen around here.

Bowlers want tables, to hold their card games and whatnot, not all are willing to sit in the settee area anymore. The last house around here that had the old settee setup, virtually non of the bowlers sat down there, they were up on the concourse.

Most leauges have gone to 3 or 4 members (or less) 5 person classic leagues are dying out. If one is up to bowl 3 seats are plenty.

Same with the ball return. Fewer members on the team mean few balls on the rack. Most houses around here have put out spare ball racks so bowlers really don't have excuses for having more than one ball on the rack.

I lament the loss of bowling centers to entertainment centers but that is the direction bowling is going.

As a center owner the first thing I did was change the seating.  We had Walmart tables and broken cracked chairs.  We replaced them with booths.  They are easier to clean do not break and stay in one place.  We also did a lot of lighting work.  The first thing was half the lights and bulbs did not work correctly.  It's amazing the amount of dirt and grime you see when the center is lit properly.  We also went on a program of scheduled repairs.  This included replacing problem machinery.  I know AMF did the same thing with ball returns a few years ago and ended up buying lazy susans.
