Do bowling center owners hate bowlers?
« on: December 09, 2009, 08:41:28 AM »
Felt a need to rant a bit...

On the plus side, my local bowling center is spending money to make the center look nicer, but they keep making choices that do not make any sense.

First, we got new chairs in the settee area.  We used to have 4 chairs per side and now we get three and a little table.  All leagues I bowl in a four or five man teams, so it must be logical to have three chairs.  And the table is so handy since you are supposed to bring your drinks and food onto the lane with you.

Next, they take out the synthetic approaches and replace them with new synthetic approaches.   I live in a humid area which makes sliding on synthetic a challenge anyway, so they added many seams all over the place which help us slide so much more.

Next, they updated the overhead lights above the lanes with brighter fixtures.  Its a nice inviting look until you try to focus on the lane surface when you see this great reflection and glare bouncing back at you.

Finally the masterwork...we get new ball returns.  The ball returns are 2 1/2 wide than the old ones on each side which is oh so helpful.  And the old returns held 13 balls so they've improved that to 11.  Because all the best bowlers only use one ball.  And everyone loves when a ball goes crashing to the floor and rolling across the center.

I really think that the people at the top of these big bowling chains are so smart!  Its no wonder that league bowling is such a growing sport!

I think part of the problem is that in the old days people that actually bowled worked and ran the alley.. usually the manager or lane man was one of the better bowlers in the house.. Now adays it seems that it is hard to find a person that works in the bowling alley that owns their own ball or even knows about lane courtesy or anything about bowling..
example.. Monday, people on the lane next to us complained about some residue on the approach.. it was there you could see it.. bowling alley worker proceded to spray his magical liquid all over the approach and only wipe up where the residue was, leaving wet puddles of cleaner all over the place...
Nice one...
I had to stop him from leaving and explain to him what a wet sole will do to someone's slide.. he just looked annoyed that he had to go back and find all the wet spots and then smart assily asking me if he got all of them...

I too bowl in a center that recently "improved" their bowlers area.  Putting tables right up near the approach, seats with NO backing, nowhere to hang a coat..I could go on and on..

i think its very important for the people that work at the bowling alley to bowl, that way they understand whats going on. ive NEVER understood why when asking somebody about a lane problem and the person working to not have a clue about whats going on. When they bowl they might atleast have a slight clue about what is going on. I bowl and work at our local center, so when im bowling in lg they always come to me with there problems rather than asking the person working b/c i can actually help them out. I dont mind helping but its annoying that i get asked over the person thats getting paid to do the job.

I don't have anything to add but welcome back Constantine.  Along with King of the Mill, that's two old time regular members contributing again.

Wow, I feel pretty good knowing I don't have to deal with all that sh!t. Every place I bowl at are all awsome places to hang out,let alone bowl. Most importantly they are run properly.

Not trying to be smart here, but......you just aren't that important.

Open play, recreational bowlers are the money makers.  The "improvements" are not focused on making your league more enjoyable.  They are focused on making the once a week $4+ a game recreational bowlers experience more enjoyable.

The only bowlers that have to keep their drinks OUT of the settee area are league bowlers.

There's probably some remote survey that has proven that people that stand more then sit, drink more.  Therefore in the bowling center atmosphere its better to have less seating to therefore encourage more drinking.  I'm not saying that such a survey exists, but that I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

i understand the frustrations posted here...with that being said,i love going to different houses and find ways to score good even with all the problems.kinda like when a deer hunter goes out on a beautiful morning, hes all ready to go....then a dang blizzard hits on top of the grizzly bear that just jumped out at him.

i do that so maybe someday i might amount to something

complaints are 95% warranted and only 5%of the time get fixed, so i try to roll with them and addabt to them and sometimes overcome them.

Do bowling center owners hate bowlers?

I can't imagine any owner hating the source of his income. Not all changes work out as planned. And since bowlers love to complain (seemingly), what one league hates might be great for a different group of customers.

I doubt any owner would invest the capital needed to make improvements if he hated bowlers, or thought it would not attract more customers. I'm always glad to hear when an owner actually tries to improve the bowling center. There are plenty that don't.

BINGO, got that right....  League bowlers are  just the fools who buy all that beer....

You want to get the attention of the owners...

Order water from the waitress...instead of beer....

All it takes is one night of the entire league not drinking beer, and you will get noticed...

Until then, you mean nothing to them....

what kind of beer you drinking these days jls........king cobra or your old standby Schlitz malt liquor ........just playing

yeah for whatever reason, center owners seem to be catering their " improvements " to the open bowler / cosmic bowlers these days, and their league bowlers ( who they try so hard to recruit ) are getting shafted . I often wonder if center managers / owners come directly from a government job, because their " decisions " are so stupid. One local center which had nice old wooden lanes, ripped them up and laid synthetics, but the kicker is they used neon orange feathers. I cant see the arrows until after I have released the ball, because they are so light on such a light colored surface. Small little details

But what you gonna do, I am not going to stop bowling, but I will chose to spend my time bowling at a place that seems to understand that the league bowler is kinda important, but they seem to be fewer and further these days
