Making the 10 - Pin (Help Please)
« on: December 10, 2008, 11:00:04 PM »
Well my game has come to a sad state where I gotta ask others how to make the 10-pin.  Yesterday was a total disaster and I cost my team the 1st half of the season.  As anchor I needed to pick up the 10 pin to win.  I missed it far left and we lost by 4 pins. (10th frame).  I wound up with only a 602 series with a high of only 212.

I have tried 2 different spare balls (one with finger tip inserts and slug and one with the bare finger tip drilling).  I have tried standing in the middle and throwing it hard and straight (looks good when I make it, but when I miss it looks bad).  I have tried standing in the left gutter and missing it.

I can't seem to get a technique that works consistently.

Stand where you feel comfortable to make the 10 pin on the lanes. I stand all the way left with my spare ball and hit my mark around 4th arrow. My success in making the 10 pin is that I put my middle finger only into the ball leaving my ring finger on top ofthe ring finger hole. this causes the ball to have less revs so it won't hook past the 10 pin. Make sureyou stay down at the line until your ball goes over your tarket don't pull up on the shot this will cause you to cross your body to pull your ball left of tarket. Give this a shot let me know if this helps.

This pin is also my enemy.

After reading this thread I decided to go to the lanes and practice 10-pin shots.  Going for the 10 first still let me practice my strike shot (or another spare shot, depending on how badly I missed on the first throw).

My percentage of successful 10-pin shots increased!

I am going to use practice time from now on to just hit 10 pins.  Next summer when I get to bowl for free after league, I will spend 1 hour hitting the 10 pin.  I will try it with no fingers, 1 finger, and try to do what Norm does.

I wish you could switch hands during a match.  I'd practice 10 pins with my left arm and use everything else with my right.  Damn USBC rules!

ok, but in seriousness this is about how I pick my ten's.

Stand fairly far left, I can't be all the way against the ball return or way past dots if your on the left side lane, hold the ball with hand on the right side of the ball (suit case)  pull pointer finger in and extend pinky out.  Then pretty much from there walk straight up (kinda focus on having a loose wrist not like cupped) and left the ball fly from your hands towards 10 pin.  sometimes it's okay to put just a little hand rotation on it because of muscle memory or in case it gets close to that gutter it can hang on for a few more inches.

Spare Tips for Competitive Bowlers: Single-pin, Two-pin Combinations

The problem with shooting the 10 from the extreme left is you're probably not accustomed to projecting the ball so far to the right, which is why you flag it to the left.  Cut down on some (not all) of that angle and you will have a more natural projection to the right.  The details are in the article referenced above.

Nothing takes the place of a lot of practice.  We have to resist the urge to impress people with our ability to hook the lane and actually practice fundamentals like throwing straight and carrying spares.

Hope all this helps.

Necro, here is how I've been shooting the 10 pin the last few weeks. I stand on 33 and I know I want to target 15. I stare at the 10 pin and then slowly bring my eyes back to the target at 15 and then go. I then try and swing my arm on the line that I visualized. The only time I miss now is if I'm having timing issues in general.

You let your team down, sure, but we all have.  I don't think there's a person on this board that can honestly say that they have always come through in the clutch.

My issues with the 10 pin come and go.  But its mostly to do with practice.  You need to practice this pin.  And when you set up to pick it up you need to make sure your body is angled along your ball path, which if you are shooting across alley, means not parallel to the foul line.

break your wrist throw it straight, most spare balls will hook if they see enough dry and you put enough hand in it,

break your wrist through it straight hit your mark the pin goes away.

and cmon necro I thought you were better than all the pros? you know they only miss one single pin spare a week right? If you are asking for spare shooting help you are not better than any PBA bowler, guess the PBA isn't that big of a joke after all uh?

Making 10-pins is largely a mental game issue for most bowlers. Even thinking "I struggle to make these" is counter-productive. Dean Hinitz has an excellent chapter dedicated to how the mental game relates to spares and how to improve at spare shooting in his book "Focused for Bowling".
