Finger grip insert problem
« on: July 10, 2006, 01:29:14 AM »
Hello all,

I have a strange problem in my arsenal: one of my balls is slipping from my hand when I am in the downswing and phase, so that I am more or less dropping it prematurely without proper lift and power. It feels as if fingers and thumb come out of the ball at the same time because I cannot get enough grip with the fingers. I can try to cling with my thumb to the hole to keep hold on the ball, but this kills any good release and is not consistent at all.

All of my balls are equipped with Vise oval finger grips without power lift (mostly white type, a few in black and purple) plus an urethane thumb slug. I have had this problem with a ball with white grips for some weeks now.

It is not that the thumb slug would be too loose (which could be easily fixed with some tape), the span too big or the pitches were wrong. All my other balls are drilled with the same specs, and there are no problems with them at all, and also not with their white inserts.

Because of the current warmth around here I suspected sweat as the problem source, and the slipping problem to be a temporary phenomenon. But cleaning fingers or rosin puffed into the holes did not help, nor does keeping the fingers dry with a cotton towel, blowing, etc.

From optical inspection the grips seem O.K., and I have balls with older and more worn-out grips that give me the hold I need to put lift on the ball and keep my thumb relaxed. But they feel... somehow slippery, and the edge seems to be less pronounced than on other balls (although there is no visible sign of wear or damage).

I am puzzled and have retired the ball since I cannot play it effectively any more. I had the ball resurfaced a couple of weeks ago (it is a Shock & Awe which has been re-done at 600 grit plus Brunswick's Rough Buff, nothing fancy). Could this have somehow changed the texture and/or friction of the grips? I am about to have the grips replaced, but if anyone has another theory or solution to it, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!
