for those of you who are not on staff, what...
« on: April 01, 2014, 12:57:34 PM »
makes you throw just one brand? (if you are)

I'm finding it hard in the last 4 to 5 years to throw anything else but Storm. Before I tried storm, I was liking Track and C300 (pre ebo) and the V2 by Ebo. Since trying Storm in 2006, I've tried other brands. AZO, LM, Bruns, Hammer, Motiv, and DV8. All these balls except Too Reckless, were all sold or given away.

Now that I'm slowly starting a new bag for Fall/winter 2014, I'm really hesitant to try other brands. Right now, I'm thinking Storm (ZG, IQF, and Breeze) for starters. But LordField looks good where I'll be bowling leagues. But.....I hate to try something and after surface adjustments and 24 games, I ended up selling it or giving it away. (There are a one or two Storm/RG balls I didn't like too)

I know there are advantages of using multiple brands, especially if I bowl a travel league. But, I think my style/game limits me to a few brands, and I just found only one for now...

Personally, I think the Sigma Sting is the best ball Motiv has produced to date. Then again, I've had great success with the 2 Cruel. LOL

Milo, I guess that proves you're not an idiot like me, lol.

Don't know, my ball driller was confused as well. It spun well in the shop, but never translated to the lanes. I tried playing with the surface....lower grit to get it moving earlier....higher grit thinking it was burning up, the only thing I didn't try was adding polish. And I was bowling in PBAX shots, so there should have been enough oil for it. In these situations, my go to excuse is usually "operator error", lol.

I know a few people who didn't like it. My pro shop guy gave me a good deal on the ball just to get it out of his shop he hated it so much. Drilled one for himself and didn't work. Drilled them for a couple of other people, no luck there either.

I shot 793 with mine first time I used it.

Is that 19 mph off your hand or on the monitor?

With that speed and rev rate, I would get the Revolt if I were you. The ball is fantastic. That or the Shock. Both balls are honestly incredible.  I never had the 2 Cruel, so I can't speak on that much, but Ive drilled 5-6 Revolts and 4 Shocks now and can't find anyone to say anything bad about them.

Matt,
The MPH is based on the monitor and the rev rate is based on CATS.

I will have to take a look at those as well.  I might give Motiv one more try. There are too many people raving about them here not too. :)

You have issues with any other brand's high rg stuff like you did with the 2 Cruel? Just out of curiosity.

Yeah with your speed I would lean toward the Revolt. You'd probably like it better being that it picks up a roll a little sooner, and is more aggressive overall. Especially with your ball speed.

I love Storm. I started out with a C300 White Dot for my first ball back in my youth league days, but then I was gifted a Storm Tropical Heat and loved that ball. Stupidly I left it in the trunk of my car in the Tucson summer heat and it cracked. I then got a 900 Global Hook and was looking for something that was a bit more aggressive since I was learning to throw fingertip, but I got rid of that ball almost as soon as I got it. I traded it for a Storm Vivid and never looked back. I still have a WD and my coach suggested a Hammer Arson Low Flare as a mid-level ball, but the rest of my arsenal is Storm.
Bowl up a Storm!
Hy-Road Pearl
Vivid
Hot Rod
Hammer Arson Low Flare
Columbia 300 White Dot

Matt,
Because of my ball speed, I tend to stay away from high RG balls usually. I am always afraid it will go too long. My driller got a good deal to try to bring Motiv into Calgary, and he thought the core and cover of the 2Cruel would work for me. He was surprised by the reaction, or lack thereof, as well. Others who tried some of the other Motiv equipment he got in this deal, seemed to like it a lot.

Let me add that I do like some higher RG equipment when looking for medium or dry lane coverage. Just don't normally go for it when looking for something to handle heavier/longer patterns.

The primal TV4 I had was probably from a bad batch. Other guys who threw the ball made it move nicely throughout. From high rev rates to low rev rates, the ball moved for them.

I tried different cover adjustments and still didn't work. It was just too time consuming on the spinner trying to find that right grit to get this ball to react on the THS's I bowled on. One house being lighter with length and the other house with more oil and length.

Also, maybe the layout too may have not been conducive to my style???  4x4x3..

4x4x3 should be a layout that works for just about everybody.  Motiv keeps getting significantly better every year.  I can't imagine them being able to put out anything better than what they have at this point though.  Not every ball will look good for everyone, but they have a few "can't miss" balls in the Primal Rage, Venom Shock, and Covert Revolt.  If you don't like these balls, you're doing something wrong.  Wrong layout, surface, lane condition, something.  Every Primal Rage I drill for somebody becomes their first out of the bag on EVERYTHING.
What would you be if you were attached to another object by an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis?

Gizmo, Matt,
If I were to invest in a ball, I am leaning toward the Venom Shock right now. I like the Reax I have, plus picked up a Darkness in the deal they ran on here. So think I am covered from a heavy oil perspective. But the Venom Shock is interesting. In looking at it though, it is listed as a Dry to Med ball. I am worried it will be too long on a true Medium shot for me with my ball speed. Was really thinking this might work in Reno for me as a step down once the lanes break in a little. What are your thoughts on this?

Sorry for hijacking the thread, lol.

It might surprise you, everytime I see EJ Tackett on anything, he's throwing it.  Yeah he's got a high rev rate, but he can play that deep on PBA oil volumes, that says something.  I think it's more of a medium to medium heavy ball.  It's really clean up front and covers a lot of boards on the back, but it's really controllable and predictable.

Thanks Gizmo.

But you're really not helping.....I don't need another ball right now....and you are making it hard to not try this one, lol.

Is Motiv in Reno anywhere? I thought last year they were in the Visionary booth. I still throw 16lbs, and I don't think anyone around here stocks it in 16lbs, and I leave for Reno next Friday, so no time to ship it without paying a fortune.
