How tight is your thumb hole? Anyone try Magic Carpet?
« on: August 16, 2004, 04:55:32 AM »
I've been battling with the feel of my thumb hole for a while now. You see, my thumb can really swell and shrink quite quickly and sometimes with a thumb hole set to be perfect when my thumb expands, I suffer the first game or two. On the other hand, if it's perfect when my thumb is normal sized, then it gets too tight during the game. I don't like my thumb hole so tight that I have to jam my thumb into it, just tight enough so that there isn't a lot of movement and that I can get a nice grip on the ball. Right now I'm using a size 29 thumb insert and am using two pieces of white tape in front. It's not perfect when my thumb is normal sized, but it'll just be a little tighter than perfect when my thumb is swollen. Should I go down another size on the next ball I drill? What's the right feel for you?

I keep mine tight enough that i have to push my thumb in it. It helps me feel good about the ball not slipping off and I never have to grip it. Just one less thing I have to think about.

Ty

On edit: I use both the white tape and the black thin tape to get the right feel.

I'd always make sure the thumb hole has at least a few pieces of tape in it. I cup the ball quite a bit so I actually like a looser thumb hole, it helps me get out of the ball much cleaner. If the fit is too tight, there's nothing you can do other than use some silicon or powder. Then you risk slipping out of the ball totally.

I want to feel slight pressure on all sides of my thumb when inserted in the ball. I don’t want to have to jam it in but I do want to feel the hole on all sides and will use tape to create that feel.

Ok it seems like my thumb hole size isn't too bad then. I'm currently using two white pieces of tape in the front and two black smooth in the back. This number changes from time to time, usually lower on the white tape, but I usually try to keep at least one piece in for feel. Thanks guys for your input.

It sounds like you'd be a candidate for Ron Clifton's Magic
Carpet.

Has anyone used Magic Carpet before? Sounds like something I would want to get.

I went down a size on my thumb to get a little more snugness recently. I was jamming too much tape into the ball (almost 10 pieces at one time) and when my thumb did swell up I couldnt get my thumb in or out to make good shots. I went downin thumb size fro 29 to 57 and it feels a lot better. I still use 3-4 pieces of tape, sometimes 5 depending on how much I open the thumb before putting tape in. I like to have a tighter thumb, but not to the point where I am forcing my thumb in. I tried magic carpet and didnt like the overall feel. I know they say to put a couple games on it so it break s in a bit, but it was literally tearing my thumb apart after 2 games I had to take it out and replace it with regular white tape. Surprising to me, my thumb didnt swell hardly at all this summer, but rather seems like it is shrinking. This could also be not bowling more than once a week (instead of 3-4 days a week). Oh well, 3 more weeks till the season starts!

Hm, the Magic Carpet was tearing your thumb apart? Was it because it was too tight?

Thumb was kinda tight but not too bad. I think it was more the material that the carpet is made of. They said it would turn your thumb a little red, but would go away once it got broken in, after about 3 games. For some reason my thumb was red after about 3 or 4 balls and it got kinda painful after a few more. Had to take it out.

Hm, that could vary from person to person. I wonder if I should try it.

I have used Magic Carpets in all of my gear for about 2 years now. It has a carpet feel that will give your thumb a carpet burn if the thumb is too tight and if the carpet isn't placed low enough in the thumb. The carpet should be placed about 3/8 of an inch below the top of the thumb hole.

I get a consistent feel without having to play with tape every frame.

I use Magic Carpets and the first few games the back of the thumb got sore.  I used a piece of HypaFix tape on it until the thumb got used to the friction and have had no problems since.  The Magic Carpets are good for reducing the amount of tape inserted and removed per set, since they do have a cushiony effect to allow for some swelling and because of their construction, allow air to flow so you can still have a tight fit and get a good release.  I also opened up the thumbhole a bit to allow for the thickness of the Magic Carpet.

PM Magic Carpet on this site or go to Ron's site: http://www.bowl4fun.com/ and look up his email address and he will send you some samples to try.

I have used The magic carpet too. Works well, good product.
Now I just use the fabric side of Velcro. Some people say it is not the same thing....  I like just as well.

"5-10 pieces at one time" WOW - thats something.
Better go and redrill ball (maybe oval) or change driller.

In old drilled balls I used one white tape (black in ball without slug).

I putting white tape quite deep so it ends just over thumb joint.
So when I relax thumb I have only small distance that thumb has to "scrach" on tape.
In new drilled ball (pitches and span changed) no needs tapes.
