I am tired of reading/seeing this...
« on: February 27, 2007, 01:55:04 AM »
How for pretty much every ball, there are reviews on here or other sites that talk about how the ball hits like at truck.  Or how the ball can go through the heads clean and turn on a dime and destroy the rack.  Or how the ball strikes so well, etc.  This is ridiculous.

And for videos, I see different balls from different brands from cheap to expensive doing the same thing: going out and hooking in and one strike after another.  What ball doesn't strike?  That is the question.  Most of these videos are editted and all thrown by different bowlers.  So you have different rev's, axis tilt, etc.  You have different pin placement.  Pin placement?  There are videos with pins everywhere and they all do the same thing (with very minor changes in breakpoint and roll and backend).

In conclusion:  ball reviews need to be less biased (i.e. man X-company created the best ball ever) and have more exact specs, exact bowling style, exact boards, exact lane conditions.  Totally ridiculous!  And videos need to have consistent bowlers.  The only videos I see that are any value with a real bowler is from Brunsnick.com.  These other ones are just worthless.  I saw some 13-year old bowling video with a Storm Passion saying he averages 224.  I see the video and I can count the revs and he does nothing but strike.  What a joke!

Videos need to be made with a robot thrower or with more consistent bowlers and exact rev's etc.

I'm done.

I don't watch any videos (okay, maybe Brunsnick), because regardless of who is throwing the ball and their perfect release, etc., I can't see the oil pattern!

There are certain conditions where my Power Groove looks awesome, and others where I have a difficult time reaching the head pin with the same Power Groove.

I will have to agree with you on this also.  It is hard to tell how a ball rolls down from most of the videos posted.  There are a few out there that provide some good information.  I would not base my decision to get a ball based upon what I saw in most of the videos.  I am glad that there enough people around here that I have about the same span as myself.  Get to try a lot of new equipment out that way.  Ebonite demo day is coming to the alley soon also.  Will be good to try out some new stuff.

This is good feedback.  Another thing that makes me mad is how Storm (yes I have lot's of their equipment and have supported them for years) keeps doing exactly what I hate.  I am pretty sure the other companies do the same but I am more experienced with the Storm line.  They just released the Storm Shift.  Wow!  This ball is so awesome right?  I mean, it just hooks so much and does nothing but strike.  Suddenly the Paradigm line which was the best thing ever for Storm is 2nd class.  How about the X-Factor line (which I am a fan of)?  Now that is just garbage.  If this other stuff is so crappy, why not sell the stuff for like half off of (retail wise)?  They don't.  They do discount the stuff somewhat after several months, but if you see their prices for the Paradigms, you will be like wtf.  Many places they are being sold for $150-160.

I am going to start just buying balls based on color now since, at least to me, they can all do pretty much the same thing if you know how to drill them and know how to modify the coverstock.  When they find a ball that goes through the heads EXACTLY like a plastic ball and somehow morphs into a sanded down reactive ball the last 10 feet or so, then I will be impressed.  Until, then, bring on your Fury's, Total NV's, Black Widow's, and Paradigm Supernatural and let's see what the new ball really does to a game where the max score is limited to 300.

Don't blame a company for trying to sell their equipment.  One should be smart enough to see through videos showing how amazing a ball is and just analyze its reaction shape etc and apply it to their game.

For example, when watching a video:
How do you even know how the lane is oiled?  Does the person even have the same style as you?  I say just base things on comparison to the stuff you have already thrown and talk to your pro shop for info.

Is it true that the top bowling balls for each company are pretty much identical apart from color?  Since there are limits for RG, differential, weights, hardness, etc., you really can't have a ball that is that different from another.

No this is not true.  I have used top bowling balls from several company's and there not identicle.  I find that certain bowling balls just work better than others for a particular bowlers game.  A great example of this is Patrick Allen.  He was with Track for the first part of the season and couldn't do much with there equipment.  Then he switches back to Ebonite and bingo he's bowling great.

I hear ya man.  Us bowlers are partially to blame though.  We all want the latest and greatest when we go to buy a new ball.  So ball companies release stuff every month or so to keep our interest.

Imagine how much revenue would be lost if a company only released 3 new balls in July, and none for the rest of the year.  Those 3 balls would soon become old news after a few months as bowlers migrate towards the latest and greatest stuff coming out from other companies.  It's a self perpetuating cycle.  Companies have to keep up with the demand for new stuff from bowlers, who in turn feel that a new ball would out hook their 1 year old ball.  Then the ball companies tell us that their new stuff is way better than last years stuff, and the cycle starts all over again.

It all keeps them in business, but just barely because bowlers refuse to pay more for a ball that only has a usable life (based on new releases) of 1 season.

That's true.  But that doesn't mean Ebonite is better than Track.  The thing is, you could probably use so many different bowling balls but you find one that you like and build off of that.

Saying that this or that company makes the best equipment "hands down case closed bla bla bla" is silly.  That's what I get tired of seeing.  Maybe say: I do better with this company than any other hands down case closed.
