league champion magnets....
« on: May 18, 2010, 04:41:05 PM »
.... are somewhat less than disappointing.  PLUS!!! They don't even have the year/season on them, so I guess the USBC can use these same magnets in perpetuity! True enough that the cloth patches weren't all that great, but I do know of a lot of folks that did sew them on their bowling shirts or jackets.  Personally, I think a nicely done(frameable) paper certificate would be a lot better.  These magnets are just plain TACKY.....

Welcome to the world of higher sanction fees and crappier awards.

If I wanted a fancy refrigerator magnet, I could by the magnetic paper and print my own...........

Yep, we won one of our Mixed Leagues and got the cheesy magnet. The USBC is also using the magnet for League High Average(as I received one). The above two awards were immediately disposed of in the closest trash can.

What a waste.........

At least the house I bowl at is kind enough to have a plaque displayed at the control desk which shows all the League Champions from all the Leagues. The Bowlers Names/Team Names and League Name are engraved on brass badges and attached to the oversize plaque. It's pretty nice.

Two weeks ago I was in the meeting room at the bowling center after a league had finished giving out their awards, money, etc. Guess what was stuck all over the back of the folding chairs? MAGNETS!!!  I think we all feel the same on this one.

Personally, I liked the patches much better.  I know that many didn't and that is why the USBC decided to try something else, but at least they looked good.

Lower the sanction fee and get rid of the magnets completely.

Just to remind folks, that national dues have not gone up in over 4 years.  Gas has, rent has, utilities have and probably saleries have, but dues have not.

I think USBC is caught between a rock and a hardplace with the award system.  They've tried emblems and pins.  People didn't use them and they got stashed in a drawer.  End result....."get better awards".  They try refridgerator magnets hoping they will at least hold up a note every now and again in view.  End result....."we don't like magnets, get better awards".

Certificates?  Your league sec. can print those out themselves.  If you want certificates, vote at the beginning of the league to alout some money for the certificate paperstock and there ya go!  Certificates.

I don't really know what kind of award would make most bowlers happy.

Our local association gave away a Pen and Pencil set for a 700 if you were under 210 I think.  I got a couple from my first two years in adults.  The pen worked well for my check book, until the kittens got a hold of it and it broke when knocked on the floor

Awards need to be given to some people, because for the average bowler, it shows they did something cool perhaps.  The higher average bowlers probably don't care.  I mean it's awesome to get a ring, but lets be honest, who really even wears there ring for longer than a week after they get it?

Then perhaps all awards should be eliminated?

How about some nifty lick-n-stick tattoos?

First 300 or 800 you get a ring.After that,your next 300 or 800 you get a lifetime USBC card.

This would make a lot of people happy, knowing that they no longer have to pay dues.

$20.00 x 40 years=$800.00 that seems about right. This is figuring you shoot your second
300 or 800 at age 30.

Exactly.  Never had a single patch do anything other than take up space in my bag.  In fact, I even have awards that I never earned - they came from all the people that got them, took one look at them and said "I don't want this, where's the trash?"  Patches and lapel pins, really, what are you going to do with them?

I remember having a team shirt when I was a youth bowler, and getting weekly stars for bowling well.  That was something back then to sew them on your shirt - sort of like the stickers the college football players put on their helmets.

Now, who even knows how to sew?  Make them iron-on?  How many people still iron?  And what good does it do after the season?  A shirt or jacket is only going to last so long.

As I'm typing this, something popped into my head.  I'm thinking of the framed displays that you see people get when they retire.  Federal workers get a plaque with $1 coins for each year.  Military people frame medals and awards.  They frame uniforms or jerseys. If you had an older bowler, they would probably enjoy a framed display of all their patches and awards - sort of an award collage.

Nowadays, people want something they can use.  Didn't they use to have a money clip award?  What about key chains?  What about plastic/acrylic awards, maybe a paperweight: http://www.lucitetombstones.com/acrylic_stock_paperweights.htm

What about some type of coin or custom poker chip?  http://bexengraving.com/Special_Occasion_Coins.html

Special medallion?

Mini bowling pin or mini viz-a ball?

http://www.noveltybowlingstuff.com/p-74-mini-bowling-pin-container-personalized.aspx

Salt and Pepper shakers?

If you don't want awards, how much do you expect them to drop the sanction fee?  $5?  Would you be happy with paying the sanction fee and checking a box that says you agree to forgo any awards?  If so, don't bowl a 300 and expect them to offer you a ring.

Really, instead of complaining, give some ideas!  I'm trying to think of things that people would be proud to display, or at least be willing to collect.

Just like Erin said. Sanction fees have not gone up the 3 years I have been bowling. Personally the magnets are alot better then the patches. The patches just got tossed into a shoe box for me. On the back of them I wrote the date, league etc on the back with a sharpie. Same thing now with the magnets. Atleast I can throw them on the refrigerator.

Many of you need to join your local association. All I hear and read is everyone complain. Never any solutions. Get on you board an be active. I'm sure many of you haven't even gone to your local association open meetings. I know now USBC at the national level has been sending Regional managers around to visit the local association boards. Contact your local association and find out when they will be by again. Be active and help make this a growing thriving sport again rather then be negative and complain about everything!

USBC will never keep everyone happy. Some like goofy awards while others don't.

My point in my previous post is that apparently that particular group didn't care for their new magnets.

I have to admit that almost every award I've ever received that was a patch,  pin, key chain, or magnet got tossed by me.

I HAVE kept my patches for the Big 4 and 7-10 conversions, as well as my Triplicate patch. They stay tucked away in a drawer, but I still have them.

I've heard so many times that we need to stop complaining and start offering solutions. The problems are I've seen us regular folks, regional and pro guys give solutions but the governing body doesn't make one change in that direction. Here is my take. Bowings best times were when the manufacturing  jobs were booming and we had plenty of those leagues filling the centers. Now that those jobs are gone and the leagues have folded over that last 20 years there should have been a push to keep our sport strong but there wasn't for whatever reason. My suggestion is to start forming youth leagues starting at the 1st grade level through elementary schools. I coach youth football and know for a fact that 3/4 of the kids I have  coached would love to learn to bowl. There needs to be a strong push at the roots to get bowling back to where we would like to see it. There may have to be a collaboration between USBC, Local Center and there surrounding schools. This is not impossible to do because there are at least 50 non profit youth football programs that go on in my city and they all start at the 1st grade level.
