Name me a ball that hits like garbage
« on: February 19, 2007, 11:09:39 AM »
Just because I'm tired of hearing about how everyone's favorite ball hits so hard.    I know it's all about matchup, and there is no magic juice in some balls and not in others.

Mr. Lebowski, this is Bill Salnicker with the Southern Cal Bowling League, and I just got a, an informal report, that a member of your team, uh, Walter Sobchak, drew a firearm during league play. If this is true of course, it contravenes a number of the league's by-laws, and article 27 of the league...

Hehe...I kind of meant this as a joke post, because I had just seen another post claiming some ball "hits like a truck."  But I guess maybe there are a few duds out there!

I hate to label any ball a dud, because it usually has something to do with the bowler, layout, or matchup. Most of the balls I haven't liked I could usually see being used successfully by someone else.

One exception for me is the Storm X-Factor Deuce. I put my favorite asymmetric layout on it, and the ball reaction was inconsistent and hit terrible. I first played with the cover, experimenting with 500-2000 grit surfaces. Next, I plugged and redrilled -- no improvement.

This ball was my final purchase from Storm. I won't take another chance with them.

No real disappointment so far - but the X-Factor RE-Loaded I once had would only perform well when it was freshly sanded. 2 or 3 games later, the ball would not need a new sanding tour. The ball did not like oil, either. Rather a bid overall disappointment.

AMF Impact KE-21 never worked for me.

The first resin hammers (Particularly the blue one) didn’t seem to work for anyone.

Columbia Rage had limited success.

The burgundy Brunswick pro zone.

The ebonite Omega.

I’m sure there are many others that have faded into obscurity.

Riptide/Tombstone/Syntactive hammer

Never rolled the Synthactive Hammer so I can't confirm that. But the Riptide was by far the worst followed closely by the Tombstone. Something tells me Ebonite trashed the formula and tried to forget that "Pro Reactive Resin" coverstock.

And I will stand up and defend the poor 3D Superhook Hammer as well. Quite popular around here. Just mislabeled with the "Super Hook" moniker.

Raging Inferno- I just could seem to get that ball to turn the corner. It also died after about 35-40 games.
Scout Reactive blue/gold- it slid so far, it made a house shot look like a 60ft sport shot.
Rule Delta 1- It hit like a friggin truck, but it was so condition specific, i couldnt stand it.

Ive had well over 30 balls in the past 5 years of seriousl bowling, and i have to say that i have never had a ball that did not work. I use different and unusual drillings all the time to experiment and i seem to always be able to score with that ball at some house or some tournament. The one ball that i had that just was way to condition specific was Action Packed. I use it every once in a while at a certain house and its good, but thats about it.

Two balls come to mind for me
1)Black Sumo:Looked great entering the pocket, lots of flat 8-10s and 7-10s.Not the bowlers fault right??(sarcasm)
2)Power Torque:Waaayy too over/under for my inconsistent release and speed control. Same as the Sumo when it did find it's way to the pocket.
I agree with anyone who says there aren't bad balls, just bad matchups.Either with lane conditions or bowlers styles.
I was just remembering,I GAVE,yes GAVE those two balls away to two different guys that got alot of use out of both balls.

Remember I am old and all the new balls I use are very condition specific and hit just fine when used right.

Back in the day, lots of guys were making the show with the Columbia 300 PowerTorq. Had it drilled up strong and that ball did NOTHING for me would come up and hit like a turd. My Teal Rhino Pro and Blue Hammer outhooked it and hit a ton harder. Used it as a spare ball up until a year and a half ago when I went with a longer span and couldn't deal with paying to plug and drill. Left it on the rack at the bowling ally.

Track Triton TKO K.O. Punch, I had this ball for three games, left 18 seven pins from three different angles, and promptly gave it away. Also, the original Resin Hammer (Dark blue color, I think) was atrociuos!!
