new USBC dress code
« on: April 06, 2007, 03:53:54 AM »
Before you think this is a crazy idea, what if there was a dress code that was similar to what most local tournaments have but mabey not quite as strict as the PBA.

Men would have to wear slacks (that would be PBA rules) but would also be allowed to wear nice cotton or polyestor pants. No jeans, sweats and definitly no shorts allowed.

Shirts must have a collar on it tucked in unless a button down shirt which does not require being tucked in. Tshirts may be worn but must not have any designs on them unless bowling attire.

Must wear a belt, no hats of any kind. Hair must be groomed if you have hair.

What do you think? If your in any sanctioned league or tournament by USBC, you must follow these new rules

i for one would applaud no smoking in bowling centers----let the bowlers who smoke go outside like at the pba events.

i think the "dress code" idea is great. there are far too many people going out in public dressed like, "bums". it seems like the people like myself who go out dressed sharp and smelling clean are the minority.

I don't care if they allow alcohol or not, I drink water or diet soda.  I couldn't see the center proprietors letting that one get through.  Some of the bowlers I see must chalk up a hefty bar tab during league.

I will say though that in both my Sport and PBA league very few if any of the bowlers drink during league.  This season it the first I have seen anyone in the sport league drink.  The hdcp leagues, beer bottles, shot glasses, etc are abundant.

Smoking is not an issue since it has been banned here in CA for many years.

Another sign of the times.

People use to care what they looked like when they were in public.

They would dress up to go to church, a dance, clubbing, a sporting event, etc.

Now it almost seems to be a race of who can look like a bum.

How tough would it be to take another set of clothes with you on bowling night and change?

Common sense would go a long way. Whats offensive to me might not be to you.

As long as your not in rags I dont care much. But I see people wearing what what I would call rags.

Shorts int he winter just looks stupid and what happens if you get stuck outside for some reason?

Well said....however...

If it were enforced in our area, leagues would vanish. It doesn't get much more "redneck" than Northeast Ohio!

My team has nice bowling shirts. We often wear jeans, but at least they are clean and decent (no holes, not faded, etc). In fact, other teams often make comments like "I would have carried that strike if I was wearing a red shirt like those guys!". Appearance DOES matter. I don't think we are in a position to enforce it for everyone, but MY team will always dress the part.

The loss of alcohol sales would cause most centers to close since a good majority have a bar in the center.
Again, a nice thought, but not a legitimate idea.........

You should have your own league, one where you are the only member.

Which leads me to the other USBC rule proposal!

No drinking alcohol or smoking during any USBC league or tournament play

The idea of a dress code in reg league bowling is crazy, several ppl here from southern warm/hot states have said they wear shorts in the summer. Well I live in Alaska and wear shorts to bowl YEAR ROUND!!  Doesnt matter if its -20 or 50 above zero.  The center still cranks the heat up in the winter even when its not really needed.  our team wore team shirts, other than that I wore khaki shorts all winter. I like to bowl comfortable and shorts help keep me cool.
Anchorage already banned smoking in public buildings, non issue there, although I do like to watch ppl get trashed and bowl "better"!!lol

Sounds like a great idea but it would never fly.

I wear blue jeans most of the time in leagues, but in the summer I wear shorts.

I get blasted by the older members of the bowling community that say I need to be a better role model to the kids in reference to the way I dress, but I will dress more appropriately in tournaments and that's about it.  I refuse to bowl leagues that require a dress code since I bowled enough leagues in the day that had dress codes.  I'm beyond that.

I don't hold a PBA card anymore, so I feel better to dress as casual as I can without looking like I came from working on a construction site.

I don't think adding a dress code for leagues will help bowling centers pull in more bowlers, just chase more out.  Five million certified bowlers leaving the game in the past 15 years can't be wrong.

I like to Bowl in dress pants and collered shirts I feel more comfortable that way so that wouldn't bother me much but alot of people would have a problem with it. Maybe if it was just Scratch leagues or something it would be okay.

I don't know about causing them to close, but shutting down the leagues for sure.  They make good money from us on lineage, probably not much more or less than they'd make from open bowling (considering that we fill the house a lot better than inconsistent open play), but they make a bundle on alcohol, both the house and the waitresses.

Yeah, we get a lot of bad press for that.  Everytime they show league bowling on TV and on the news, all we ever see are people dressed badly.

The main problem I see with a dress code is the people that come straight from work or have no time to go home to change (and nowhere convenient to change at the alley).  I'd like to see more team shirts, but a dress code would be a pain in the rear for a lot of people.

Finally, does anyone really think that asking a 300 pound woman wearing a halter top and mini-skirt to put on more respectable clothes is going to get you anywhere other than sat on?  A woman like that wearing clothes like that is probably thinking "Big is beautiful" and will tell you just where you can shove your uniform.

This is crazy!  Banning shorts in a mixed league kills all the fun. that would be like banning sex in between the rows of lockers!

i think shorts for when the weather is warm is a good idea----it makes sense. however, i think the style of shorts and their condition would make the difference.

i bowled our associations masters invitational tournament today and the rules call for "proper attire". this is defined in the rules of the tournament as "slacks, except those made of denim, with the pockets on the inside". shirts must be one of three types: 1) polo type with collar, 2) mock t-shirt, or 3) "retro style" bowling shirt. the dress code is strictly enforced----they've sent bowlers away for not complying. i have no problem with this.
