Pro Shops vs Online Stores
« on: August 27, 2006, 09:17:58 AM »
Let the debate begin !!! Im interested in some opinions as to why so many people use online stores for their equipment instead of local Pro Shops. This is a topic that we discuss regularly and i'd like to get some opinions from around the country

On the Pro Shop side ( which im a part of ) - pros :
Face to Face customer service
No hidden shipping / drilling fees ( at least in our case )
If there is a problem, we take care of it
Professional service - the guy on the other end of the phone doesnt know you

Id like to hear all comments good and bad

I only buy online when the deal is too good to pass up. On top of what Jeff mentioned, your not really saving any money (Vapor Zone at Buddies is $120Free shipping, my proshop $140) But most proshops charge more for drilling a ball not bought there. And proshops can get equipment faster.

I've bought online mostly for the closeout deals.  Most pro shops don't have a lot of deals like that, at least not in this area.  And if I could get a VZ for $140 in the shop here, I'd have four of them.

I think that in most cases, current high end balls will come out a little bit cheaper buying online.  For me, it'd be worth it to buy it in the shop.  At the mid-range, it's almost even, and I can't see saving anything buying an entry-level ball online.

i only get my stuff drilled at the pro shop, i don't buy the balls from there.

say i pay 140 shipped for a NIB ball, and pay 45 to get it drilled with slugs/grips.

thats 185 out the door.

if i bought it in his shop, he would charge 230 plus tax for the ball, so close to 245 out the door.

im saving $60 a ball.  I can't pass that up in the least bit

I bought my last three balls on line (two Legends Balls and one Lane 1 ball) because my driller's distributor doesn't handle Legends balls and my driller doesn't sell Lane 1 balls and he had no problem with me doing this for these reasons. I even discussed with him prior to buying those 3 balls. When a pro shop charges $20-$25 more for a ball in his shop and especially when this shop shows that he relly appreciates my business, I don't have a problem with that and will buy  from the pro shop first, but when there is $65 per ball difference like there would have been had I bought these two Legends balls from another local pro shop that does sell Legends balls and also which never gives the impression they appreciate my business  then I have a problem with that.

IBowl and Smash 8-10, can you give me some details of which ball you are talking ( or at least a range of balls ). I'm just gathering some information and i'd also like to get an idea of what some other markets are charging for equipment ( that could be a part of the problem too ). If you dont want to post the info here, feel free to private message me. Thanks

Brick, i agree with you on your post. Thats one reason why online stores come in handy. Ive run into that with certain Viz-a-Balls and a few other items

I buy used most of the time, but when I do buy new I will buy online (allstarbowling joe).  Here in Tennessee for example a roto grip epic saga runs $219 with grips and slug then add tax so $239.26.  Allstarbowling joe has it for sale for $159 shipped drilled slugged the difference is $80.26 cheaper online.  I don't know about everybody else but that is 4 hrs of my 40 hour work week difference.

When I was just beginning to bowl I didn't realize how much I was getting hosed.  My proshop charges $10 for a set of vise grips and another $10 for a slug.  Online I can get 5 sets of grips and three slugs for $24.70 shipped.

I really think that proshops need to embrace drilling internet balls.  Only the older bowlers, most of them don't trust the internet, buy from my proshop.  The only thing they are cheaper on is balls they put on sale and spare balls.

I buy from the proshop only because I want to make them money and because I don't buy my own balls, I get them for birthdays and christmas.

JDT: who says that this info didn't come straight from the purchasers own mouth? If you must not be watching TV around Christmas would know that ages 40 and above aren't your biggest online spenders.

jeff, i do business with bill smith's ams bowling supply in independence, missouri. bill runs one of the most successful pro shops in the metro kansas city area. although i don't live in independence i drive the 45 miles because i know it will be worth it. besides bowling at a high level( he's bowled the us open and shot 850+ several times ) he's drilled equipment for pba national champions, pba regional champions, pwba members, high roller winners, state record holders, etc. he's very professional with customers yet has a good sense humor and people like him. he gives me discounts as i'm a regular customer. what i probably appreciate the most is how he gets the oval on the thumbhole just right every time. he also puts up with me when it comes to changing the surface on the balls seemingly all the time. he charges $35 for drilling if you didn't buy the ball from him. there are some brands of bowling balls he doesn't keep in stock but he will get anything you want. i wouldn't think of buying a ball anywhere else due to his ability to drill it correctly and the discount i get. however, he'll be the first to admit he can't match internet prices. i usually get bags and shoes off the internet because the savings are great. he understands as my wife and i are civil servants and are not wealthy. if you are ever in the kansas city metro area stop by and see him.

jeff.

the shop i go to likes to charge $230-$235 drilled PLUS tax for the following for example
mean machine
total shock and awe
awesome hook
awesome flip
sahara
action packed
radical inferno
action max..

i think you get the picture there, pretty much ANYTHING high end.

mid price balls that go for $150 plus tax.
rs1
equation
ambush
wizard
the jinx's
i think you get the picture there too!

he sells the spare tire for 99 plus tax
i think you can get a white dot for 69 plus tax

i think he was doing a closeout on classic zone green pins for $165.

he has no competition, and stays extremely busy.  To me these prices are crazy, thats why i said i buy online and save 60 bucks a pop

To elaborate on the shop here, I priced a Dynothane Energy, one of their high-end balls.  He said $230 less 15% for league members.  So about $195 drilled.  Plus $12.50 for inserts and $15 for a thumb slug (not a solid, either).  That's $223 plus tax, just a pinch under $240.

Were I to buy a current ball online (instead of a closeout like I have in the past), I could buy a high-end ball for $130 or so.  Shipped.  The two balls I've had drilled there cost me $66 each.  That's $35 for the drilling plus the same $27.50 for inserts.  A big $40-50 below what he charges for the same ball.

For a $10 or $20 difference, it wouldn't matter.  For $50, it does.

Here's a different answer.

I paid the price asked for by local Pro shops. Bought maybe 4 balls in six months. No discounts .. full PRO SHOP prices. I was happy .. balls rolled good and the fit was comfortable. About six months from my first ball purchase my thumb started to swell from EXCESSIVE BOWLING! With my thumb starting to get TORN UP I went back to the shop and explainned the situation. He suggested that the balls had to be adjusted and I let him go ahead. When he finished there was a CHARGE for his work!

I never went back to the shop ..probable bought a ball every 2/3 months since then ON-LINE including the drilling!

Yes you can buy inserts and slugs for less online but what are you going to do with them????    When you buy inserts and slugs what you are paying for is the labor to install them!  To install a slug you have to drill the first hole to fit the slug.  Then you have to prep the hole and hammer the slug into place.  After you do that you need to realign the mill and drill your thumb hole.  After drilling the thumb hole you cut the slug down with the plug cutter.  No slug less labor.  Go ahead and bring in your own slug and grips most pro shops will still charge you for the labor to install them.  Bringing your own in may save you nothing except $3 of the shop price.
