Seriously, who put the voodoo whammy on me?
« on: October 26, 2007, 05:46:24 AM »
[emotional breakdown]

So,uhmmm, a few weeks ago I was coasting along with a 207 avg. I think it was
then that a dark cloud appeared over me, a pin was stuck in a voodoo doll,
a fubar curse was employed... sompin' happn 2 me.

Three weeks later, I'm at 189 average in league (let that sink in - that is a huge drop in average).
My scores have fallen off a cliff, exponential decline, incomprehensible ball
reactions, physics defying chops and splits, just some darned confusing things
going on for my bowling (plus frustration making it worse).

A typical game for me right now, 4 strikes in a row, pocket 7-10, spare, strike, chop 6 off of 10 pin, strike, split....

choping a 6 off a 10? from across the lane? with a spare ball, 6 pin and ball going behind the 10 pin - WTF?

I've become handicap pins person on my team.... ugh!

Anybody else gone completely OFF the scoring cliff recently?

More strangeness, I feel like I am bowling better than I ever have. I am
hitting my marks and doing what I think is correct at the time, but apparently
I just suck at good bowling. I was scoring better with chuck it bowling.

[/emotional breakdown]

Ah well, just slumping I guess. Let it go...let it go..... bowl thru it, eh?

Dr. Joe

I, too, am in a horrific funk lately, and to top it off, I hurt my back this week. Struggling through three games Wednesday night (and shooting 530-something) was extremely painful (literally AND figuratively). I have decided to take a week off to heal up and get my head together. Hopefully that is all it takes to get the good time rolling again.

That sucks.  I'm worried I'm going to be in the same boat on my Wednesday league.  I had a 189 average, next week it'll be 179.  10 pins in one week.  Shot a 407.

Now one should be able to salvage even a 450-500 series even when you can't hit the pocket or carry.  Make your spares, get good count, you should hit 160.  I was missing spares, leaving splits, buckets, and on the (maybe) 10 shots that were actually in the pocket I had four strikes.

Don't know if it will help you, but it helped me: I hit a slump last year when I couldn't predict ball reaction, so I put away all my "new" equipment, pulled out something that was old and weaker than what I needed (but that wouldn't jump around down lane) and made myself go out there, slow it down and finesse the ball to the pocket.

One of the best bowlers in our association, when he gets into a slump, switches to plastic for a couple of weeks. I didn't go that far, but if you're in a huge slump, it might be worth a try.

Yep! I'm right there with you!
From 200 earlier in the season to barely 190. Lots of missed spares and crummy leaves on what appear to be good pocket shots. I'm consistent around the pocket, but I'm not getting the breaks that everyone else is. I feel like I've been German bowling for the last 3 weeks - nine, nine, nine ... Lots of ringing 10 pins, stone 9 pins, and even some 8 pins (WTF!).
If you find out what the whammy removal tool is, I'd love to hear it.

In order to remove a curse/whammy/hex, you must sacrifice something from your bowling bag. I recommend a towel, a rosin bag, your spare ball, or a bottle of New Skin. It must be something that you've used recently. Take the item and bury it in your backyard. Then recite the following: "Oh bowling gods, with this sacrifice, may you lift this bloody curse. Never should it return." Then sprinkle a cup of warm vinegar on the grave, and you are done, and so is the curse. Just make sure you never dig up the item.

You'll thank me later.

Darn it! I used a chicken foot instead of vinegar!! Oh, holy ringing 10 pin.

I had a period in bowling where every break I had was good!

Well over 50%.

Now I'm in a period where if there is a break it's bad!  Balls messed up when on a streak.  Thumbholes get tight inexplicably when on a streak.

BUT...It's all part of natural cycles.

I've been taking a spare ball with me to league and that thing has been down the lane hundreds of times and either has yet to nick a pin or if it nicks one...it nicks one out of two! or two of 3.

Yesterday I celebrated my first 7 pin spare of the season and did it with my strike ball!

Imagine what this type of sparemaking can do to your average?  I neglect to mention that I usually have to do over two hours of practicing a week on a 7 pin to get up near 80% conversion ratio.

Right now I'd say I'm about 1 for 99!  Improving as the one was last night...10th frame!..   bad but part of the fun of switchin hands!

I'd guess I'm down about 30 pins from where I my strike ball is and that's not so sweet either.  But I think there is upside ahead.

Getting ready to go practice and throw about 8 different strike balls.  That should help my sparemaking .....NOT.

Throughout the '90s and early 00's I was a 200+ average bowler. Then in 2003 I ruptured bicpes tendons in my right (bowling) shoulder. After missing the last half of one season and the first half of the next, I came back and was slowly but working my average back up...right before Christmas of 2005 I was back up into the 190s when I was struck by a car while jogging, causing injuries requiring surgery. I missed the remainder of the '05-'06 season, came back a little too soon to bowl in '06-'07, and struggled to a 170 average. Now I feel like I'm back to health, but I'm bowling even WORSE -- down in the 160s...with just ridiculous sets...if I'm throwing strikes, I can't make a spare...if my spare shooting's on, I can't buy a strike...I can shoot a pair of 200s, and then a 120, or come in shoot a 130-180-210 type set, or best of all, a 200-130-190 type set...although all of those are better than shooting 3 150 games and ending up with a 450 set...at this I have not a clue...worst slump ever...

Maybe it was just an off week for everybody?

I'm nowhere near as good as most on this site, but on Wednesday I went 172, 119, 146.

The 172 was with a gutter on the fill ball!

119 game was no more than 2 marks the entire game.  Yes, I chopped a 6 from the 6-10.  Also chopped the 3 off the 3,6,10.  Also chopped the 1 off the 1,2,5.  Wrapped the 1 around the 2 and 8.  I was slicing and dicing like Martin Yan!

Previous 2 weeks I was throwing 530-540 series and thinking I was finally starting to be more consistent......so much for that!

i feel your pain.  although i am throwing the ball well, there just isnt enough oil and daily maintanence done where i bowl.  the place was getting better now its gone off the deep end.  im fixing to dip below 170 with an entering of 193.  but i dont feel bad cause the other big gun is 30 pins down from his book.  oh well, at least my release and timing is coming back.

Cheer up and chin up, it will all pass soon.  I usually carry around a 210-215 average, and was up to 225 at one point this year, but I hit that slump/streak and my average has fallen17 pins, down to 208.

I know, I know, and I'm not complaining too much about having a 208 avg, just saying that even guys with higher averages go through slumps too.

When I slump, I go back and work on my basics.  Making sure my timing is good, making sure my knee bend is right, making sure my follow through is up and forward, etc....

Remember slumps are only temporary, and when you DO come out, your average will be lower, perhaps low enough to give you that advantage you need to get into the quarter finals or the championship roll-offs.  Some will accuse you of bagging, but you'll know the difference.

Must be in the stars.  I've been having performance anxiety that I just can't get over.  My average for the first time in 5 years is sub 190 - I came in last week at 189 and put up a 581 for the night.  Carry is gone.  Lots of over/under reaction.

189.  And I'm a PBA member.

Stupid thing is that I practiced on the conditions for 3 games before starting league play.  I shot 227, 246 alone then a 190 with one of my teammates.  Suddenly there were stone 8's, flat 7's, a blowout 7-10, even some crushed 10 pins (for a lefty!).  The low scores carried over to league play.

Blah!
