The best ball for heavy oil
« on: April 12, 2013, 08:05:39 PM »
I need some advice as to what the best ball is for heavy oil patterns. I am a high speed medium rev down and in bowler. I had the 900 global bank roll because it was a really low rg ball, but still wasn't getting the results I'd hoped to. Also, would an early hooking layout be better than a more arcing layout? Pin down rather than pin up? Help! I'm relatively new to bowling and need some solid advice.... Thanks!!

The answer to your question will largely depend on what you exactly mean when you say "heavy oil."

In many times, a long pattern and moderate volume is often called heavy when in effect it really is not.

Another option is a medium length pattern with high volume...again its often called heavy.

Long and heavy will require a different plan of attack in terms of ball choice and layout than a pattern that's heavy volume and short.

Also keep in mind that "heavy oil balls" don't cover boards.  Many people buy heavy oil balls and are disappointed because they don't cover as many boards as their other pieces.  Heavy oil balls don't respond to friction as fast as other balls because they bleed energy much faster in the midlane.

Surface is 70% of ball reaction. Also speed is a deterent on oily conditions. A 360 or 500 surface thrown slower would be a place to start before plugging or adding a P4 weight hole.

The main patterns I am concerned with are the one's used at our state tournament. Usually either the red, white, or blue pattern. Our THS is generally very short but moderately heavy oil, especially to the outside. Also, would a higher RG ball be better since it reacts more aggressively off of the dry, or a low RG ball that revs sooner?

As far as speed goes, I've changed from a 5 to a 4 step approach and hold the ball down around my knee just to try and reduce the speed as much as possible. I still have a hard time getting it below 16 mph without literally dropping the ball....

here is actual data from a class that I attended

the factors that influence a ball motion are:

coverstock - 50% of total reaction
core type - 20% of total reaction
texture - 15% of total reaction
layout & tweaks - 15% of total reaction

the above data is from a very knowledgeable person in the industry

Track 912T is a heavy oil ball
check out this vid

I threw it a demo days last fall on a fairly heavy oil pattern, It is to much ball for me, although i have a higher rev rate and axis tilt.
It takes to surfaces changes very well

Have both the Raptor Talon and the Reax  - Raptor Talon a little earlier - Reax a foot or two longer but to me stronger on the back end.

I know Radical is fairly new...well maybe not new, but just teamed up with one of the big manufacturers recently. I have read a little bit on them, but not much. I've seen a lot of great reviews on the 2cruel, and have a couple of friends who have the new talon.
