Using rubbing alcohol between frames.
« on: May 05, 2008, 04:38:47 AM »
Is it legal? I thought it wasn't, but league president said it was. I know it is OK to use on your ball before and after.

Thanks

How effect is rubbing alchohol as opposed to ball cleaners made by the bowling companies?  Does it leave the bowling ball more tacky to pick up more gunk on the lane so you have to keep using it?

Also, while on the subject on ball cleaning, are their any substances that get oil out of the ball so you don't have to do the hot water bath?  And if hot water bath is the only method, do you need to sand the ball to a lower grit if it's polished or can you put it in as is?  Is dawn or any other dish detergent necessary when using this method?

My opinion is that straight Alcohol isn't a very good cleaner. I use Simple Green and alcohol mix. It seems as the Simple Green has the detergant to cut the oil, and the alcohol causes it to very quickly dry.

I have never sanded my ball before a hot water bath, and have gotten very good results. It may be better to sand it to open the pores, but it's not necessary.
I always use straight water in a 5 gal bucket, before I drain the water to out put fresh water in, I put a little dish liquid in my hand, reach into the water, and rub the ball down with it to remove any oil sticking to the ball.

You'll tell the difference after you're done. When you rub your fingers across the ball after a bath, and you hear them squeeking, you've got a nice clean ball. They feel sticky enough that you can almost palm them.

Rubbing alcohol is not as effective as the good bowling ball cleaners.

There is no substitute for an oil extraction. Clean and Dull comes closest. Hot water bath is only one method. There's the Revivior, the Rejuvenator, Hook Again, CPR, dishwasher w/o heated drying, and several other "home remedies".

The dish detergent helps to break up the oil and wash it away. Most people do sand the ball rough before doing an extraction. Someone said it "opens up the pores." No big deal, either way.

I use the Revivor Oven by Innovative Bowling Products in my shop. I find it to be the best way to extract oil from resin bowling balls. The Rejuvenator Oven is a simpler design, and IMHO not as effective.

Prior to oil extraction, it does help to open the pores of the ball. I offer a resurface (Cook's Sphere Machine) and revival for a package deal. I take the surface of the ball down on the resurfacer, and then place the ball in the Revivor Oven. After a few hours (depends on the condition of the ball) I remove the ball and let it sit overnight. Then, I complete the resurfacing to any finish that the customer requires.

I've done a lot of balls this way, and it does "bring them back alive".

Before the summer stars I may have to do this with my gamebreaker, it seems to be hooking a little less than usual. Although I already have it taken down to 600, so maybe I will just do the hot water method.

Do you mean that you literally mix them together before using them, or that you use one first and then the other?  It's it's the former, how much of each do you put in the mix?

Is this the right way to use a Dish detergent with a hot water bath?  I wasn't sure if you were supposed to use liquid are are there solid cube-type detergents as well?  I have Cascade Complete(liquid) for dishes, but I was wondering if hand soap would also work.

Rubbing alcohol is not as efefctive as the good bowling ball cleaners.

Is PowerHouse good enough?  Also what if you use alcohol in combination with Simple Green like skiz said?

I find that alchol is all I need to clean a ball. An I just put large amounts of Dawn in my hot water baths and just let them sit for an hour or so and its done.

One more question.  Is covering the holes of your ball important before putting it in the water?  I've done it before but with duct tape and I don't like it because it leaves a sticky residue that I have to spend time rubbing off.

I just mix a little alcohol in with the Simple Green. Maybe 25% alcohol. It just helps it dry faster so I'm not standing there holding my ball on the approach waiting for it to dry.
If your not in a big hurry, such as at home, by all means you can use straight Simple Green.

After soaking your ball has soaked in a hot water bath for awhile, reach in a feel the surface of the ball. You can feel the oil slime coating the surface. If you simply pick up the ball, the oil stays on the ball, then you need to clean it off.
I like to just wipe off the oil before removing it from the water. You could even do it with your bare hand, just to release it from the balls surface.

You can mix Simple Green and rubbing alcohol in the same bottle for a good homemade cleaner. Simple Green is pretty powerful stuff, so I would use it diluted in relation to the amount of alcohol. Other BR members may be able to chime in with a ratio that has worked for them.

There is no need to tape the finger or thumb holes prior to a hot water bath. Hot tap water works fine. There are various arguments for and against the addition of dish detergent. I tried both with and without dish detergent. Rubbing the surface of the ball with a white scotchbrite pad during the bath helps wipe the oil from the ball and bring the oil to the surface.

So you would use a larger amount of achohol relative to the amount of Simple Green since simple Green is so strong?  Interesting, skiz only uses alchohol as a quick drier.  I wouldn't be using this cleaning method during competition, just at home after each set or so.  I just want to make sure this stuff won't kill my ball.  Any other household cleaners that could work on bowling balls?

Would a simple rag work to rub the oil off the surface of the ball during a bath?

FYI  Simple Green and Alcohol are both legal to use during competition.

I dampen my towel, and use it to give the ball a quick wipe before I throw as needed. It's probably mostly a mental process of giving me a consistant reaction with a clean ball.

Yeah, to each his own.  To me it would be more of a hassle to use during competition and sometimes people get irritated by wet rags and such.  I just want to clean it periodically so that it maintains a clean cover before every competition.  Which reminds me, since these substances don't extract oil, is there much of a reason to use them except to be free of whatever marks the lane and ball return leave of your ball?

The other rule is that you can sand a ball before use in the middle of the match as long as the ball was not in play prior to sanding...
