Using rubbing alcohol between frames.
« on: May 05, 2008, 04:38:47 AM »
Is it legal? I thought it wasn't, but league president said it was. I know it is OK to use on your ball before and after.

Thanks

Legal takes off belt marks which can effect ball roll from gunk build up. What bothers me is the numb nuts that keep a soaked rag in between all the balls on the return rack.

we about had a fist fight break out several weeks ago over this,

unless your league or tourney rules state otherwise, use of alcohol to clean your ball is perfectly legal, states as such in the rules, now if your league or tourney rules say otherwise (like the usbc national tourney does) then you cannot

USBC rules state it is legal. I dampen my towel with Simple Green to wipe off my ball between frames.
Just lay it where nodody else will sit on it.

Rubbing alcohol is one of the approved substances for use during competition by USBC. There are even certain forms of polish that are legal as well. As long as the grit of the ball is not changed, then its legal.

not true. you can't sand the ball rougher and you can't manually use abrasives on the nball, but you can put it in the Lustre King which, these days, contains rubbing compound mostly. It DOES change the grit level, but it is legal to use it during bowling.

I stand corrected. I know you can't sand the ball rougher once competition has started.

I actually looked this up recently as I had a teammate who used to do that, and I always thought it was illegal myself, so i looked it up and found the USBC spec page with isopropyl alcohol being perfectly legal for use during competition.

It's funny if you think about it. You can't sand or polish or use some harsh chemicals on the ball but you certainty can use a different ball during a game.

This is from the USBC site. I am not looking to split hairs but...

"Any cloth towel that is non-abrasive that doesn't modify the surface finish of the ball and contains no chemical additives will be acceptable for use during USBC certified competition."

Isn't alcohol a chemical additive?

ok since this is on a good direction now...

Heres a good question. Lets say I have 2 polished total nv's, both drilled identical. Everything is the same on both, including top weight, etc. I use only one in competition to start with... The lanes seem to have some carry down after 7-8 frames and I cant get the ball to turn the corner. Could I take the other ball, which has been in the bag the whole time and sand it to say 1000 Abralon, then use it??? Or is this ilegal yet still...?

Just a thought of having the capabilities of changing your balls surface if you had two identical balls as mentioned, and you just didnt use but one. I just thought since maybe you havnt used the ball at all that it may be acceptable to change a surface.

I would think it would still be considered illegal but I just wanted to make sure... thanks

Changing the surface of the ball is illegal.

You can hit them with a little Bean's or other approved polishes though.

Can abrasives be used during certified competition?

The outer surface of any bowling ball cannot be altered with an abrasive after the start of competition. This includes balls that have not yet been introduced into play.

Further, the start of competition is defined as the point the first ball is thrown by any participant for score. This would allow a bowler to alter the outer surface of a ball during practice and not be in violation of Rule 18.

Here's a link for the cleaners/polishes.
