What is YOUR contribution to bowling?
« on: November 02, 2003, 08:46:55 PM »
I can't help but notice so many posts about equipment companies, the PBA, and bowling in general which carry some type of negative message.

My question to you is... what have YOU done to improve it?

I'm not talking about complaining on the forums here, I'm talking about ACTION that IMPROVES the sport.  Do you coach junior leagues?  I'll bet someone here does.  Do you participate on any committees for improving the conditions in bowling centers?  Do you actively participate in local tournaments without complaining the whole way?

The reason I ask is this.  To every issue, you can be part of the problem or the solution.  Spreading bad vibes about something isn't a solution.  And if you have a great idea about something, what have you done to get it in the hands of those that can make the change possible?  Does posting on this website get you any closer to fixing the issue?  Or are you just b*tching?

I know I'm complaining about people compaining, but I hope people will reply in this thread with some POSITIVE things that you actually DO and not just say.

I constantly raise hell with the proprietors of the alleys to put out better, easier shots so everyone will go home happier and look forward to come back next week!  LOL.

I guess I just like to come on here and gripe.  It helps relieve some tension.  Mostly, I know and admit my game has many flaws, and it aggravates me to no end that I can't seem to work them out no matter how hard I try.  However, if I know an answer, or can help someone on here who has a question, I will post what (little) I know and hope that bit of info will help them out.

Our local schools start bowling soon, and who knows, maybe I can help some of those kids. BTW Tony, what exactly do you do for the sport? I know you have that website(er, rampage forum) but what else do you do?

Hehe, I knew someone would ask me this.

Well, besides spending countless hours on my website, which has much more information that the Forums, as most of you know I am a member of the PBA and on staff with Dyno-thane and Turbo.  I've also built a couple bowling websites, Dyno-thane's and Power Supplies Tape... working on a third website that will sell discounted bowling balls.  Being on staff obligates me to evangelise the good word about these companies.  I try to encourage people to buy their products and often assist with layouts and stuff.  Through allBowling.com I think I promote the PBA strongly.  I encourage my users to compete and many members go to my site to check their performance profile... there is a huge database I've built to support these features.  I am also investigating the possibility of hosting my own regional.  That costs money and time, both are hard for me to come by.  The PWBA also thinks highly enough of my efforts to include my website address in their press releases, since I have their content and entry forms on my site.

These may sound like small things to you, but overall I feel I have a positive impact on the sport of bowling in my region.  One and a half years ago I did none of this.  I've certainly done my share of complaining, I did a little of that on the PBA forums.  They banned me and told me if I didn't like it to start my own website.  So I did.

To only be known for the Rampage Forum is silly.  You've certainly haven't seen some of the other features of the site.

One of the features I am most proud of is the Performance Profiles.  Since Mike Scroggins is the hot ticket these days, check this out to see how dominant he has been in our region.

I like the graphing software personally.

I complained that there weren't any scratch tournaments for women other than regionals in our area. So I started my own group.

I coach juniors Saturday mornings.

I am a member of my local association board of directors.

I try my best to promote tournaments, even though most bowlers think it's pointless to bowl since they won't win (they're a bit obsessed with money here).

I'll be representing my association at both conventions in Reno and Wichita.

I haven't started any websites yet, so that will be next!

1) I bowl.
2) I help promote local tournies all the time, as well as competing.
3) I help other bowlers as much as I can to improve thier games so they remain
   interested in the game.
4) I work very hard convincing my wife how important bowling is.

A few years ago I approached the directors of the local junior bowling program with an idea which they were happy to accept and implement.  To help keep kids interested in the sport, I wanted to get bowling balls into the hands of those who did not already have one and would possibly drop out because of not being able to compete with those kids who already had their own.  The directors set up a point program which included points for attendance, sportsmanship, and scores.  Beginning bowling balls would be awarded once a month and would start a couple of months into the season to allow time for points to be earned.  Made arrangements with the proshop owner who was one of the directors to get balls at his cost.  I donated about $150 to get it started and found another bowler who donated $100 and we had a couple of others who chipped in.

The program was a success in helping to keep kids interested in bowling.  A couple of kids who were talking of dropping out won a ball and came back the following season.  Kids who already had their own equipment would use the won ball as a spare ball.  Plus with the sportsman points, behavior on the lanes is better.  The next two seasons I donated $200 each, figured I could donate the cost of what I would pay for a ball.  With the beginners balls costing something like $40-50, that would pay for a few.  This season I asked if they needed a donation, but they said they have enough left over to cover this year's.  They've been running 50-50 ticket sales during the regular leagues to help cover the cost.

I went out and got my Bronze Coaching Certification and volunteerd to coach my old High School Team.  It's been a really good time so far.  The best thing about coaching was Saturday one of my regular students(Non High School) competed in the Special Olympics Bowling Tournament at DC West.  It was fantastic to watch.

I don't do anything, nothing at all.  Well I guess I do 2 things which are pay for practice and bowl league.  Other than that I don't assist in any extra curricular manner.

Now my question is, why should I?  Its not my passion its not my hobby its not my living its just a silly game to me where I can drink some beer, chill with friends, pick up on fat ugly chicks, and eat chili cheese fries.  Hell I can do that at the local 7-11.  If bowling is taken away tomorrow I'd find something else to do with my time.

Second question, what makes bowling worth the while?
