Whats your vote for best/worst ball of 2007
« on: December 18, 2007, 12:22:25 PM »
Just lookin' for some opinions.  We're late in the year so, from relase date Jan. 1st 2007 or later, whats your vote for the best/worst ball?

My vote for the best would be the pearl widow

And worst would be the storm shift

I have noticed that a lot of times people complain about balls meant for heavier oil and I wonder if they are just getting the wrong ball for the condition they are on.

Example: "My Special Agent doesn't hook/hits the pins dead."  Are you actually serious?  I think something is seriously wrong with your matchup there.  It's all about matchups because some people's "worst" balls are the "best" to others.

i have a fury, and it works well for me tho i dont throw it as my first ball, thats my vapor zone.  but if i want or need to open the lane up the fury shines for me.  doesnt quit for me either (i guess our house is on the medium oily/oily side then)  one of my teammates have thrown both the shift and the bwp with great success.  when the bwp skates too much the shift is perfect for him, and hes shot some monster scores with both (790's, 780's 770's 750's with the bwp couple over 720 with the shift). this at a house that has had i think 1 800 series in 4 yrs ,and averages 2 or 3 300's per year.

main arsenal:
vapor zone
fury
el nino 2000
green gargoyle
blue dot
current averages 206 and 207

Bunnie: At a simplistic level, you're correct. However, when you dig deeper, there is a little more to it.

Use the Fury as as example. At least from the survey here (and according to my own experience), most bowlers do not like it. Out of the box, it's unusable to most. With lots cover prep experimentation, some bowlers have found a niche for the ball and have actually done well with it. However, most who took the Fury plunge wish they could get a refund. Balls that require continuous tweaking for minimal usability fall out of favor quickly.

I suspect many of the other balls voted as 'worst' fall into the same category; they either do not perform as advertised, require immense/on-going cover changes, or have such a narrow band usage that they're not worth carrying around --  for most.

Given the above, that's why the Columbia Rival shows up on several 'best' lists. The ball performs as advertised, and it's versatile across several conditions OOB. I would guess that several of the other balls were voted 'best' using the same reasoning.

Well the way I have been looking at it is to get a couple that work on many conditions (maybe a couple different ways for options) and then a couple to fit those niches you spoke of.  I don't think that makes the niche ball bad especially if you are in say a PBA Experience league.

Oh and about the FURY, I can't speak for that one too much since I have only ever seen one guy use it.  He was doing pretty good with it.

Best: Toss up between Sure Fire and Sidewinder. So much versatility with both balls. Sure Fire has been money on most of the league conditions and some tournament conditions. Sidewinder was just flat awesome on almost everything I threw it on.

Worst: Fury solid. I just never matched up and I tried two different ones. this ball usually was DOA on most conditions for me. I shined it and it was no better. I laid it out weaker, no results. I laid it out stronger and then shined the cover to a gloss, no results. I just could not get a match up with this ball.

Best ball = Columbia 300 Rival(Predictability, Strong Arc that is very versatile that I can pretty much use on any condition)
Worse ball = Radical Inferno(Never did anything for me)

One more vote for the Rival as the best ball of the year.  By far the most versatile ball I've ever thrown.

The most disappointing ball for me this year was the Epic Odyssey, it didn't react for me like I thought it was going to and took a lot of work with surface and weight hole addition to get it to the point where it was OK.  I think the longer Pin to CG distance is a big part of that.  Nothing wrong with the ball, just a bad matchup for me right now.
