Which Coverstock is the Most Durable?
« on: October 28, 2005, 01:59:43 AM »
I've been playing with a 13lb Storm Diablo. Due to my low rev and heavy carry down at the house I've been playing, I've sanded the coverstock down to 600 grit for the sake of more traction. But what really troubles me is that the ball seems to lose reaction quite quickly. Right after cleaning the ball really hooks, but after just a couple of games I have to move far right and lower my ball speed so that the ball still finds the pocket. I doubt if it's the problem of the coverstock and so I wish to look for a new ball with a much more durable one.

Any suggestions? I've heard that the Activator+ from Brunswick is one of the most durable. But if there's another from a mid-priced ball I would definitely go for that.

Thanks!

Dyno-thane's Soaker coverstock is durable.   But it's not in their mid-tier line.

I recommend the Thing Lives!

I've heard that the Activator and PK18 coverstocks create much traction on the lanes and are awesome. But does it mean that they absorb lane oil quickly? If this is the case, how come they are still so durable?

Thanks!

not to hijack your post or anything, but one of my balls, it would hook a lot the first game when it was clean but then after the second i had to put it away because it gets so much oil all over it, and if i clean it, and throw the next ball it will be all oily again. is that defined as bad coverstock durability?

It's natural to get oil on the ball.  You can wipe it off with a towel.  I like the cheap microfiber towels from Walmart.  You can get them in a pack of 5 for $5-6.

If the oil is really all over the ball, then your center may be putting down a lot of oil.  We had that problem in our sport league a few summers ago.  It pretty much killed my black Power Groove.

Losing reaction is bad durability, getting oil on the ball isn't.  Leaving the oil on can promote a loss of reaction (since the oil is left on the ball to be absorbed instead of cleaned off) faster than if the ball is regularly cleaned.

In terms of durability, I would say Hammer's Cut Throat coverstock.  After so many games, it still looks good.

Thanks for all the replies!
The Activator or PK18 maybe what I will go for.

But I do want to ask if the Reactor coverstock on the Diablo loses reaction so readily. Or is it just my problem. Or should I never have sanded it down to 600.

Thanks!

As far as durability is concerned I'd agree with Tony.  DT's Soaker coverstock is very very durable.  I've got a Thing with over 400 games on it.  It does tend to shine after a game for me after taking it to 800 <est.> with a worn green Scotch-Brite pad.  Not sure exactly why possibly the hybrid type cover.

What ever my Forrest Green Quantum is made of. It is 11 years old and still going as strong today as it did when I bought it in September of 1994.

I agree with the powerkoil 18 and the activator.
Lanemasters diamond particle covers are also very durable.

By what I'm reading is that you're fighting carrydown and not the coverstock changing.

Either carrydown or rollout...

And my vote for PK18 and original Activator. In that order.

Soaker.  Better than PK18, activator, Big bang, superflex...you name it.  Ebonite has a new coverstock coming out, we'll have to see.

Brunswick's Powerkoil 18 and Columbia's Superflex are proven winners with a long history.
