I dont really care. Its a different day and age from when Earl set the record. WRW doesnt effect me or anyone else except for who he bowls against in the tournaments.

Whether WRW gets the tie or breaks the record I don't really care.  He still hasn't accomplished it in as few of tournaments and I think he proably won't be as well recognized as Earl.

Reminds me of the Movie Mr. 3000.  It doesn't matter if you get into the hall of fame but how are you going to be remembered.

Personally I would like to see someone like PDW break the record.  He may be a pain on the lanes but everyone seems to respect the guy.

Some guys are just liked and never get the right recognition and others who have all the talent are never liked.

What's with everyone not respecting Walter Ray?  It seems like you guys can't grasp with the fact that one of this current era's best is about to break a record of one of the past era's best (i.e. the best in the game).  I don't see why there are so many people ripping on Walter Ray for doing this.  It's not like the guy doesn't deserve it or anything, he's worked his butt off just as hard to get here, so why would someone like a PDW or Barnes get more mention about people wanting them to break the record than Walter Ray?  What has he done wrong?

If someone can explain this to me, please do, if not, then I will definitely go on cheering for Walter Ray to break the record because he deserves it as much as anybody!

He needs 43 to tie but the PBA does not want to acknowledge this fact about Earl's 2 masters that were not counted but yet we never hear about this do we?? I personally do not like WRW after he snubbed me and my wife 3 years ago at the PBA stop in Vegas, he was rude and very unfriendly. Every other PBA member including Weber was very funny and polite to be around but not WRW, so i went from being a fan to not liking him after that experience.

Truthfully, I could care less what he does.  But I'll only consider his 44th title to be the real record breaker.  (Earl had 43 including his two master's that have not been recognized as official titles).

Agreed.  Records are made to be broken.  Does anyone care that Hank Aaron broke the home run record?  That Babe Ruth broke it before him?  The same applies for any sport that's been going on for 100 years like bowling. Do people really think that no one would ever have 41 titles again?  Can you really say that Earl not only was the greatest but will be forever?  That there will NEVER be anyone better than Earl Anthony?

Don't get me wrong, I think he was a great bowler and apparently a great guy as well.  Will that 41st or 42nd or 44th title take that away?  I don't think it's appropriate to call someone the "best bowler" without qualifying it with "today" or "of the 1960s" or "sometime last June".  Earl Anthony was a staggeringly good bowler.  So is WRW.  And PDW and lots of other guys.  Why not leave it at that?

I've had mixed feelings on this one for awhile now.  Earl Anthony was one of my childhood idols.

The nice thing is this: If WRW does tie or break the record, he's likely to be the first one to mention how it isn't as big of an accomplishment as Anthony's.

You can say Earl won more titles in fewer tournaments, but you have to think about the competivness of his time and now, theres more bowlers, more equiptment etc...

i too do not understand it when bowlers cannot or will not acknowledge walter ray williams, jr.'s talent. i think many pba players would love to be as versatile as him( and have as many titles ). i think many scratch league and tournament players would be amazed by his accuracy and consistency. i know there is no one who can possibly question his spare making ability.

perhaps society today is too quick to judge someone who is head and shoulders better than most. in professional team  sports and the olympics someone that good is usually thought to be taking some illegal substance to help him. what happened to winning with ability and skill ? with walter ray you get what you see---someone who tries and works hard and has done well.

we're not likely to see a player of his caliber again in our lifetime. he isn't your average touring pro by any means. your typical pro doesn't have a college degree in physics. or is a computer whiz. or a great chess player. or a world champion horseshoe player. or has met presidents, etc., etc., etc.

i for one am honored to have met walter ray and paige and wish them both the best in everything they do.

I have no problem with WRW breaking Earl's record.  I just want the PBA to credit Anthony with the proper amount of victories.  #44 is Walters magic number.

Out of curiosity (not putting anyone up or down), does WRW have any pre-PBA Masters titles?  I thought I saw something a while back about it.  What about other tournaments that were not PBA titles but are now (US Open maybe?)?

Era, number of tournaments, WRW's fan base vs. other peoples fan base. It doesnt matter. I respect his game. I respect everyones game who it out there. They are out there for a reason.

Whats that line? "Its not how, its how many". Who said that? WRW has figured out the answer to that question the most over recent years. Thats impressive.

The record still means nothing to me. He's a very good bowler. He is maybe the best bowler (dont want to start that argument). But when he sets the record what will happen? Will they herald him as the greatest bowler ever? Will ESPN start referring to Anthony, Weber, and Williams as the forefathers of this game we play. I dont think so. He will just be the same guy who won a couple more times. Whoopity do.
