You really think the PBA bowlers are the best..?
« on: November 09, 2007, 04:54:10 PM »
I see all these people saying how great they are and knowing when to adjust ect...but yet I still them shoot sub 200 games on TV and in match play.

The pros bowl on the same 5 patterns week in and out, shouldn't they have mastered the patterns by now ?

We should expect them to shoot 260+ every game, no ?

"The best in the world" I keep hearing...

Same names over and over, WRW, PDW, PBIII, TJ blah blah blah

There plenty of guys that don't (or didn't) turn pro that would clean house on the tour. A guy like Tim Mack would wreck havoc on Tour in IMO.

Any thoughts on this?

(I'm not talking about the guys that only avg 200 and get a PBA card just for the ball discounts)

What? Everybody in the world tried their luck on tour? Ok. I think you missed my point.

This is what I could find on Osku Palermaa:
2003 US Open : 227th
2004 US Open : 5th
2004 ABC Masters : 46th
2005 US Open : 19th

Is that really horrible? For a 19-21 year old with a semi self-taught style?

Mika won the Dydo this year w/American Mike Wolfe, I think, finishing 2nd on their turf.

Japan != rest of the world.

When one country starts dominating the American PBA guys

I never said there was some mysterious hidden country filled with bowlers all averaging 275 on completely flat patterns. I'd bet the US has the best environment for developing bowling talent, but I think it's arrogant to think that you couldn't find 15-20 people out of the rest of the world with enough raw talent to compete and be successful on the PBA tour.

Why don't they shoe up and compete?

If the PBA tour shut down tomorrow, how many exempt players do you think would compete internationally and leave their families behind for most of the year?
Since you mention the Japan Cup, how many would move to Japan to compete on the pro tour there, a country with different customs and a completely different language? If they didn't move there, would I then be entitled to sit on my behind and say the Japanese pro tour is the best in the world, because the old exempt players don't travel halfway across the world to compete?

I don't deny that the top of the PBA tour players probably are the best, and like I said, I can't wait to see how the new Team USA dream team does in international events, against what other countries consider their top players.

My point was, Japan does have a tour & the PBA went over there & won.  I didn't say the rest of the world wasn't good.  In fact I pointed to Mika & Amletto.  But the rest of the world aren't the best & not better than the PBA.  I didn't say that Osku wasn't good either, but did he win?  You posted 5th place as his best finish.  Sort of proving my point.  Your 1st post said we didn't compete with the rest of the world, not mine.  As far as the Dream team event goes:  Even if the US team were to lose, the PBA is still the best in the world.  On any given day, another guy or team other than PBA member(s) can win, but the percentages point against it.  Bottom line So far, noone has proven that anybody is better than the PBA.  In fact, most of these posts debunk any opposing views against them.  JMHO.

Lets take lasts week show for instance. Look at WRW...A great bowler would have adjusted after the first couple of flat 10's, no ? When I was watching it, I couldn't belive that people consider him the greatest and to watch him no adjusting for a flat 10 ?...Somethings wrong here.
Were you bowling on that oil pattern?  No.  If he made a one board adjustment, he might have lost the pocket.  If he made a ball change, he might have had a less predictable ball reaction and left a couple splits rather than easy spares.

Regionals, Tour, and Experience Leagues are really three different animals.  The Tour guys all play the lanes like a team.  They play the same part of the lane, and than BAM!!! the shot blows open and they start striking like mothers...  In regionals, not quite the same.  The better players play the lanes correctly and together.  The rub is these guys make up less than half the field.  Many of the part time regional guys, and most all of the guests don't always play on the correct part of the lane.  Therefore, the lanes get broken down in a mish mash fashion.  All of the previous factors come into play and then add in the "Toe" factor, for lack of a better term.  That's what is commonly said and hack sounds really mean to me.  Scores are usually higher on tour than regionals because of no "Toe" factor.

OK, someone want to define "Toe" for me in regards to bowling? I've heard that term a couple of times and don't know what it means. Thanks.

To answer your topic header directly: Yes they are the best.  I have bowled in many pro tournaments and all I can say is that no matter where they bowl or what the shot is the upper tier pros you see on t.v. week in and week out are THE best in the world, period.  There are some great amateur bowlers out there who could be very competitive and could probably beat some second tier pros consistently; But, I feel if you take the upper tier amateurs in the world and the upper tier pros in the world, the upper tier pros are better every time.
