You think scores are too high? Blame your fellow bowler
« on: January 05, 2010, 07:41:55 AM »
My dad bowls in a fairly competitive handicap league on Tuesday nites.  Over the last several months, scores have been very high.  Not a lot of honor scores, but a lot of people are averaging 10-15 (or more) pins higher this year over last year.

Well, a couple weeks ago, a few of the officers/captains went to the manager and asked if she could make the shot a little tougher.  They didn't want it to be US Open hard, they just felt scores were getting out of hand.  The manager said she'd look into it.

Her final response?  She's not going to change the shot.  She talked to the other leagues, they all like the shot and the scoring pace.  It's a 20-team league, no other house in the area can take them next year.

I guess I have not been a bowler since age 9 then.  I walk into my local center that I have been bowling at for the past 10 years since I moved to this area.  I bowl whatever shot they put down year after year.  I drink a beer once in a while when I''m in the mood, and compete with the friends I bowl with on my team each week.

Last I checked:  That makes me a BOWLER.

It would be nice if the shot was a little more difficult. However, when you have a mixture of people who know what they are doing and some that are learning and gaining ground bowling with those that couldn't hit a mark if you paid them, it not going to happen. Every league I've ever bowled in, including PBAX, there are some that don't know what they don't know. They make adjustments because their ball didn't go where they wanted. But they don't know why. Some do not want to be educated in the sport of bowling. I can't imagine why you would do something every week and not want to get better. I am beginning to think the only salvation for bowling is going to have to come from us, the bowlers. We must share our knowledge as often as possible to as many as possible. Nothing changes at the top, it has to come from the bottom.

After getting used to bowling on easy conditions, there is no turning back. Most bowlers have no clue, nor want one, when they are shooting 250+ game every once in a while even though they have 170 - 190 average.

Practice is no longer required. If you put out the tough shot, they will quit. Paying money to bowl and only shooting 130 - 160 games is not what they want to do. Its all about their individual score. Even if those 130 - 160 games were the best in league...they still would quit.

Its all about score. The Bowling Center Owner knows that. And when running a business, you have to think about the money. You give the customer what they want. You need their business.

Don't know why so many people say this .. bowling better then 50 years think I might have had 2 drinks at a bowling alley!

So, because YOU don't drink at the bowling alley, it's not an accurate statement to make?

There is something wrong when you can take four years off from the game and break 200 the first game after you set foot back in a center AND have multiple open frames...and that was with the slide foot having to bump up against the end cap.  THAT is a big part of why I quit bowling and is a big part of why I have no real desire to go back.

Bring in some real conditions that are not a stand left, pitch right and you get the people like me back into the SPORT who have walked away from it precisely because of the fluff...

Together with an easy oil pattern you put this also into the equation.
http://www.WAHSAM.com/

With these bouncing trampolines in the sides of the gutters of the pinsetter. Will have "bowlers" thinking they can out bowl Norman Duke or Walter R Williams any day.

And it is USBC approved

Now wasn''t the USBC complaining about the bowling balls and the scores??????

Give me a break!!!!

Unless you average 240, you have no grounds to say the lanes are too easy.

Too easy too hard there is no in between. Read the stuff posted on here and people are always complaining about everything.

If you feel the shot is to easy buy a ball with less technology. I bowl with a guy on a mens league who uses plastic and averages 190. (He has always used plastic and doesn't want to change.)

It averages out in the end. If everybody averages 220 and you change to say plastic and average 175 in a handicapped league it still comes down to who shoots there average or above more often as to who will win.

Yet according to your profile, you average 220, but don't bowl leagues because "THS is a joke"

Keep in mind this product is in many bowling centers under a different name of lumber and bracing. It is an easy bolt in support system. Pros bowl with them as well. Either this product (wahsam) or the less expensive version (lumber) installed at the time of the lanes. Or any center can hire a carpenter to go back and ad support as needed. It's nothing new, just another way to make money off of a lack of knowledge.

Leave the shot alone, but make everybody bowl against 4 1/2lb pins with NO VOIDS!

Don't make bowling hard, make SCORING hard.

Not to continue the drinking thing .. but .. do you estimate 50%+ people DO drink while bowling?
