You think scores are too high? Blame your fellow bowler
« on: January 05, 2010, 07:41:55 AM »
My dad bowls in a fairly competitive handicap league on Tuesday nites.  Over the last several months, scores have been very high.  Not a lot of honor scores, but a lot of people are averaging 10-15 (or more) pins higher this year over last year.

Well, a couple weeks ago, a few of the officers/captains went to the manager and asked if she could make the shot a little tougher.  They didn't want it to be US Open hard, they just felt scores were getting out of hand.  The manager said she'd look into it.

Her final response?  She's not going to change the shot.  She talked to the other leagues, they all like the shot and the scoring pace.  It's a 20-team league, no other house in the area can take them next year.

I can understand her position if
a) she really did take a poll of most of her other leagues, and
b) if they have only one oil machine and it's not programmable.

If it is programmable, there is no reason for her not to put out a different shot for your league.

If most of the bowlers in your dad's league truly think the shot is too easy, they can just use less appropriate balls. Of course if it's a money league, no one wnats to give up an advantage.

The lowest common denominator oftens wins such situations. That and lazy managers.

I'm not disagreeing .. just a thought!

I've been in leagues where after 7-8 weeks the shot suddenly changes un-announced. More then 50% of the bowlers complain .. some reasons are valid .. for example: I bought a ball to meet the old condition .. now it's useless our team lost 60 points in scores this week. It might be tough for a manager to change a shot once it's been established!

I agree that each week the shot should change...

Bowling isn't suppose to be made easy and you should earn your scores.

If the league your participating in isn't a sanction bowling league my the shot easy but for realy league make it hard...

That how I feel

The House I bowl at has done the same thing. They put out an easy shot and we had several 300 games (12) and 800 series (10) in the first 6 weeks of leagues. So they changed it to a much harder shot. It made alot of people mad cause they had already had above normal averages already established and they were coming up short after the change, 20+ each game. I know of several that said they were gonna quit over it. So they changed it a 3rd time. It's about a midway compromise between the 2. They did lose a few but most stayed. BUt I do agree with the previous statement..."Make it consistant"...not a have your cake and eat it too shot, but remember that we're not pro's and are doing this for the enjoyment of the sport. If ya can't have any fun then they won't come back next season.

you said only a "Few" of the officers and captains asked for a more difficult shot.  The league should have voted on this and they should have acted in behalf of the league not themselves.

The manager did the right thing in not changing the shot.  You can not change the shot everytime a few bowlers complain.

Bowlers vote with their feel.

If you have two houses close together the higher scoring house will end up with the most bowlers.

Around here there is only one full season PBAx league and it has only 9 members. There are a few short season PBAx leagues but they are all handicap.

Most bowlers only want a shot that is tougher for their opponent, not for themselves.

I didn't say only a few asked for a tougher shot, I said a few WENT to the manager.  All the captains agreed to ask for the shot to be toughened up.

Charlest:  I don't know what machine they have, but it is a newer (5 years old maybe) Phoenix machine.  So they should be able to change the shot...problem is I'm not sure anyone at the house knows how to program it, they probably had to get someone from corporate (it's a Brunswick house) to come in to do it.

My point in all this is something I've stated for years, and this is further proof.  Everyone wants to blame the ABC/USBC or the bowling centers for "lack of integrity", but in reality, it's the bowlers themselves who are to blame.
Back when honor scores used to get rejected, instead of going to the bowling center and saying "Why are you putting out an illegal shot?"  they went to the then ABC and said "Hey, it's not MY fault the shot is illegal, I want my ring"

In general, bowlers don't want difficult conditions.  They want to show up, drink a few beers, shoot their 600 and go home.

Corrected.

Sad to say, I have seen this for the last 15 years. Humans can be pathetic. No desires except for self-aggrandizememt: "I am hot sh*t." and the rest of you can go "put it where the sun don't shine." So Sad.

yea its true,,,,,, the old association I bowled in for years, basically ended up with 4 "houses" that kept on putting out easier and easier shots, to get more bowlers.

And its also funny how bowler's dont really want a tougher shot but, something tougher for other bowlers.   And I was the same, back when i bowled in said association, because while my avg went up about 10pins.. Not sure if it was from me bowling better or the lanes lol ( maybe a bit of both ).  But the big difference was when you see someone with a 20+ pin difference in average, or they have a higher avg, then the General manager who is a PBA regional Pro.....

Well, first, I was speaking generally.  Most of the people on this board don't feel this way, we want things to be a little tougher...but like I said, we're in the minority.

Second, I've actually had someone say that to me, almost verbatim.  I believe his exact words were "I don't come here to figure out a puzzle, I want to come in shoot my 620-650, have a few beers with the guys and go home."

Centers will not make a shot harder, they will lose business and that is all that matters.

Start using heavier pins...Yes it will hurt the youth and seniors...one will become a better bowler and get use to it for the other will be like old times.

The problem is that there are not enough BOWLERS.  The houses are catering to the socializing (and/or drinking) whiners who happen to roll a spherical object towards roughly 40 pounds of somewhat cylindrical wood with a plastic coating.

BOWLERS would WELCOME the challenge of a real condition...
