Are the Sigma Sting & Tribal Fire a good 1-2 combo?
« on: January 18, 2015, 05:10:23 PM »
I recently bought these two balls but I haven't drilled them yet. Since both balls are listed on the Motiv website as "moderate" hook, one for light to medium oil and the other one to medium oil I thought that they will make a great 1-2 combo. But lately I've been reading that the Tribal fire is more of a THS killer, benchamark, medium oil ball than a light to medium since it is stronger than other balls listed under the same category. (I read almost exactly the same about the Sigma Sting)

My question is, are these two balls a good combo? Are these two balls complements each other? I'm a left handed bowler and since I usually don't see enought breakdown, I'm afraid these two balls can be more similar to what I wanted/needed. I don't want to have two "almost the same" balls, since I'm looking to have 2 different balls for 2 different conditions. I hope that I explanied myselft properly.

Having the Sigma Sting, I can say that is a killer ball for THS.  I can also say that it is one of the best benchmark balls I've thrown to date.  The Tribal Fire will compliment it pretty well as the overall core/cover combo tend to favor more of medium-light volumes.

The Sigma Core is actually a lower RG core at 2.47 with the diff of .047.  The Tribal Fire with its Halogen Core has an RG of 2.55 and diff of .037.  What this all means is that the Sigma Sting will rev up earlier and react to the dry quicker compared to the Tribal Fire revving up later and reacting to the dry slower.

So basically they are a good combo based on the numbers.  Start with the Sigma Sting and once it starts to be too much ball, go to the Tribal Fire.

I think it could be fine, just don't underestimate the strength off of the dry for the fire.  I bought one for medium to light and it bounces off the dry a lot harder then I was planning

Good to know! I was thinking in other options already. For the Fire, I was thinking drilling the ball with a longer pin to pap to control the flair and retain some energy since I heard/read a lot of times that the Fire is stronger than advertised. Would that help me controlling the ball on drier patterns?

I own both balls, the Tribal Fire is as strong as the Sigma Sting but with a different shot shape. If you want a true compliment to the Sigma Sting, the original Tribal would be a better fit. Or even step down the the Apex Ascent.

How would you define each shot shape?

Drilled the same, as mine are, the Sigma Sting is one long arching motion as it picks up the mid lane nicely and makes a decent move off the dry. The Tribal Fire is a bit more angular, but the number of boards covered is almost the same with more motion down lane. The original Tribal on the other hand, is probably a full arrow less total hook than the Sigma Sting, but it's almost all toward the end of the pattern. It's a great ball for moving left(right handed) when the need arises.  I don't get the same response from the Tribal Fire.

Damn... In the motiv website both are listed as "moderate" and "delayed hook" that's why i thought about them to be a 1-2 combo, I also read that the Tribal is more of a "hockey stick" kind of hook. I don't want to overbook my arsenal with 2 medium balls... I want two balls that can complement each other...

So, do you think the original Tribal would be a better complement for the Sigma Sting? Or should I go up and look for a Vengeance or a Primal Rage since I don't usually experience drier conditons where I bowl plus the fact that I'm left handed and the lanes doesn't break down for me as for a right handed..

I only know what I see on the lanes. For me, the Fire and Sting are pretty close. I usually don't even carry the Fire, just a sanded Sting, a polished Sting and a box finish original Tribal. Generally I start with the polished Sting on a house shot and use the Tribal once a little burn develops.

Being a lefty, you can probably use the Sting for the entire set. The only time I have to go away from it is if I have others on my pair using the latest chalk surface hook in a box.

Thankfully i haven't drilled the Fire yet, so I might be able to chamge it for an original Trinal. But as you said, If I'm gonna be able to bowl a complete series with the Sting I was wondering if it is really neccesary to have something like a Tribal/Tribal Fire since I don't really see a lot of break down on my side...

What ball would be a better complement for my Signa Sting? The Venom Shock or the original Tribal? I'm looking for a ball that can be used when the lanes start to break down... A cleaner and more predictable ball.

That depends on you as a bowler. As a right hand bowler, it's the Tribal for me as I need to chase the oil to the left as the line transitions. I have seen very few left hand bowlers need to make the same kind of move(to the right), so the Shock might be a better bet for you.

I love the Venom Shock and as I have one 2000 sanded Sting and one polished Sting, the Venom Shock fits between them perfectly. Of course, I could just move off the big dot, but who wants to do that when I can just carry more balls instead?  ;D

The thing is, that I have a small problem moving to the right chasing the oil (I tend to walk towards left at the end of my release) I'm working on that, but I rather stay in the same spot for as long as I can, that's why I'm looking for something that can help me when my Aura Paranormal or my Sigma Sting will be too much. I would like to play outside, no more inside than the 2nd arrow... In that case, would you recommend the Venom over the two tribals?
