Plastic Ball Tournament Predictions
« on: July 31, 2008, 02:35:40 AM »
Now that the PBA plastic ball tournament is a virtual lock to happen...

Which non-exempt pros would you want to put money on to do well?  Which exempt pros do you think have a shot? And, for a final (fun) question... which pros do you think have little to no chance?

I'll start:

Non-exempt:

1) Jim Pratt
2) Mike Houtz
3) One of the senior guys -- like a Tom Baker, David Ozio, etc.

Exempt (in order):

1) Norm Duke
2) Mike Machuga
3) PDW (though the Cheetah aspect of the event might hurt his chances)
4) WRW (though I personally think his game has benefitted from reactive stuff tremendously)
5) Danny Wiseman
6) SURPRISE: Mike Fagan (for some reason, I can see it happening)

Exempt (who will not do well, also in order):

1) Sean Rash (He's got the hand to carry a ton, but this is a guy whose area on the lanes is largely the result of modern equipment)
2) Ritchie Allen
3) SURPRISE/SHOCK: Chris Barnes or Tommy Jones (just because you know there is going to be a shocking finish for somebody)

Thoughts? Let's make a few predictions...

Plastic tournament, that ought to be interesting.

With as much hand as some of the guys have, I'd say Mallot, Jones, Weber. But guaranteed, it'll be slow speeds that do better

Sorry to say, it is. Honestly, I (like you) would have liked to see it on a different shot - maybe even Shark or the U.S. Open pattern, to really it make it a test. That, or find an old wood house and put down something similar to pre-urethane conditions. I'm not saying they should be laying down lacquer, but it'd be more interesting that way.

I'd say accurate guys will have a better shot than not so accurate guys:

Parker Bohn III
WRW Jr.
PDW
Duke

The older guys, lol.  Oh, and Jeff CARTER!!

I spoke with Kirk about it in Vegas recently, and he described it as a rumor...that was extremely likely to occur. Since then, it has been confirmed on PBA forums and in person (Bob's trade show in the Chicago-area) by Tour exempt bowlers. The exempt guys got the format list recently, and the new schedule will be featuring some mixed condition tournaments, a house shot tourney, the plastic ball event, and possibly a few other atypical formats.

The plastic winner will be a guy with alot of hand, IMO.   Tommy Jones, Malott, Simard, Fagan, or Smith are my picks.

A half ten is not a great shot.  No, you shouldn't have carried it.

I like the prospects for someone with big revs - so Big Wes ought to do well.

If it comes down to a splitting a gnat's hairs type of contest, then the super accurate guys should dominate. I like Norm Duke in this case.

I wonder if 15# vs. 16# will have an impact in this type of contest?

Finally, for my long shot pick, I'll take Eugene McCune. He throws a fast, straight ball that should match up well to the straighter plastic game that everyone else might have to adapt to.

Of course, if I could really predict such things with any accuracy, I'd be rich already.

Unless they give enough dry area straighter will be even greater on an event like this.

If you used a long pattern the carry down would make the pin deck brutally slick.

Walter Ray, Duke are two obvious picks. Parker, Scroggins, Barnes.

I don't know enough about some of the newer exempt to pick. Someone might have a nitch game that would match up.

A dark horse might be Kretzer, Angelo.

Walter Ray, Parker Bohn, Michael Fagan, Chris Barnes.
I'm gonna put my money on those guys to do really well.
Walter Ray and Parker for there precision.
Fagan for his rev rate and Barnes for his control and consistency

I say Walter Ray. I saw him warm up on Cheetah last year in Medford and he sat there and struck all practice long up the ditch with his Denny's spare ball while he carried down the 1-2 board area in match play. It was crazy to watch. Obviously this was only a games worth or so of shots, but I agree that accuracy will be key here.

u guys have to remember, all the high revvers throw with a lot of speed, with plastic thats not gonna work too well because of overthrowing the break. i pick DUKE, WRW, BOHN

Im so glad people are brainwashed to think that TRACK sucks. And its even funnier when im carrying with my TRACK ball and they're going flat ten with their BRUNSWICK ball.

No doubt.. The accurate players will win.  The power players with alot of hand won't be able to create room.  They have a better show chucking the ball hard down the center. The winners of this tournament would be...

Norm Duke
Brian voss
Mike Machuga
Walter Ray
Chris Barnes
