You Call That Bowling
« on: November 26, 2007, 04:33:20 AM »
I normally look forward to Sunday afternoons when the PBA is on. I enjoy watching the top bowlers in the world compete against each other. Sunday wasn’t one of those times.

What was the PBA thinking when they put that oil pattern down?

Who else on earth besides Robert Smith could throw the ball 15 feet onto the lane and still have it hook as much as what I saw!

I thought it was a contest between who could execute the best shot not who had the physical strength to loft the ball the furthest.

I was pulling for Brad Angelo to win. Not that I don’t dislike Smith but I thought Angelo play smart. He kept up with the transition of the lanes (for the most part) and made adjustments or switched balls to keep up with the lack of oil.

Then Smith walks out there and heaves the ball to win.

It was a bad day for bowling.

How about test the abilities not their strength next time.

That is an ability.  Sometimes these patterns force you way left.  Even non-power guys.  Now take a guy like Smith?

OK, so you are standing on the left front of the ball return.  You have to change your approach to compensate and you have to have precise loft skill.

Robert Smith did what was to his advantage to win on that shark pattern and that surface on that day.  That shot probably isn't available every week, or he would probably have more titles.

What's the difference between that and Walter Ray playing straighter because it's to his advantage?

These guys are great bowlers and they want to win, not look pretty taking second place.

See I thought he made it look pretty.  I guess some people were horrified by that.

Other than the Barnes vs. Angelo strange one, I thought they all looked good on a very tough shot.

Robert is executing shots.  It is just different from what people normally see.  Try standing in front of the ball return and hitting the 35th board.  The only way is to loft the ball over the gutter/ball return.  If you roll the ball, it will be in the gutter or the next lane.

To bereez and any one else whining about the line he was playing do I hear just a little jealousy in your tone?

Mr. Smith is a very talented bowler.

He can put it down gently with his usual tremendous speed and revs, he can loft it like he did this past Sunday, and he can back up the ball (using the lefty's line when it's the only available choice) with almost as many revs as from the right side and same speed, and is also able to play any part of the lane, including the outside!

The only thing that has hurt him a little the last couple of years have been injuries.

I'm hoping to see him a lot on TV in the future, even if all we ever see him doing is lofting the ball over the left gutter.

And one more thing, Robert is a very likeable individual.

How about stop crying because you are too lazy to hit the gym.  It was an awesome day for bowling.  It shows that the best athlete won not some fatso or some weak guy that is using the balls dynamics and speed for most of the work.  You probably don't watch other sports then if you are complaining about how strength won.  You should probably not bowl against me then either since I bowl more like Robert Smith than any of the other bowlers on the telecast.  There needs to be more bowlers like Robert Smith and less 'league bowlers' who happen to have bowled long enough in their lives to be good enough for the PBA.

Necro - You crack me up.

I looked at your spec's and we throw about the same way and yes I average 215 also. Oh by the way "sonny" I'm 53! How does that make you feel? I love putting house bowlers like you to shame. It is funny looking over at them and I know their wondering "How can that OLD mand throw the ball as fast and with the same amount of rev's I do?"

Hit the gym? Please.......be there, still doing that.

So keep practing and maybe when your as old as I am you'll be able to do the the young guns as I've been doing for years.
