You Call That Bowling
« on: November 26, 2007, 04:33:20 AM »
I normally look forward to Sunday afternoons when the PBA is on. I enjoy watching the top bowlers in the world compete against each other. Sunday wasn’t one of those times.

What was the PBA thinking when they put that oil pattern down?

Who else on earth besides Robert Smith could throw the ball 15 feet onto the lane and still have it hook as much as what I saw!

I thought it was a contest between who could execute the best shot not who had the physical strength to loft the ball the furthest.

I was pulling for Brad Angelo to win. Not that I don’t dislike Smith but I thought Angelo play smart. He kept up with the transition of the lanes (for the most part) and made adjustments or switched balls to keep up with the lack of oil.

Then Smith walks out there and heaves the ball to win.

It was a bad day for bowling.

How about test the abilities not their strength next time.

Seems like the strength to loft that far is a pretty nice ability.  What were they thinking?  They have patterns that play far outside and patterns that play far inside, they were thinking that this would be an inside week.

If you saw the Etonic Edge footwork thing they filmed on Robert Smith during practice, he was standing much further right and playing pretty direct up the 12 board area during practice.  The Shark pattern is long, but there's not a ton of oil on the heads, meaning you have to start moving left to find some head oil to push it down the lane while still getting through the carrydown at the back.  Combine that with a high friction surface and a ton of bowling on the TV pair and you're going to have to start moving left a lot.

I thought Mika had the best look of them all after he switched to the Fury.

Robert Smith was lucky that Mika did not take out the Fury first. Because after he started throwing the Fury he was stiking all the way. It would have been very interesting to see Mika throwing from the outside and Robert from the inside in the finals on TV.

This pattern can be played from both sides Mika showed how is done but it came down to his selection of bowling ball to start his game. Came to late.

Robert Smith has the ability and the strength. Like in all sports you have to have both. That allows you to have Plan A, B and C.

It would seem that the extra "practice", heat from the lights and Robert's rev rate dictated that he play the lanes in that fashion. As a professional bowler, your job is to knock down pins.  If the amount of friction dictated lofting the ball then so be it. It is my understanding that the PBA scouts centers in advance to determine patterns with the roughest surfaces getting the Cheetah.

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.

isnt the first time that smith took his rev rate and loft and lofted it to th arrows, if i had that rev rate i might need to loft it to the arrows to.

Maxium Bob bowled good enough to win. That's what the guys are there to do~win. His line/style was better than everyone else's to be able to score, and get the win.

Here is what I posted in another forum:

I guess I’m old school.

• I wasn’t basing anyone I was stating how I felt about the show.
• I’m not hiding behind any screen name.
• I’m not a “pro” so I don’t get to see that type of shot every often. I know no one threw it that way when we played during our PBA experience league.

Guess being 50+ has its disadvantages!

Question for the bowling proprietors: Would you like someone lofting the balls out to the arrows because they saw the “pro’s” do it on TV?

On Synthetics, loft really isn't a big deal.  On wood...

I thought is was entertaining. Robert Smith did what he had to do in order to win. He played his 'A' game. I would have been dissapointed if he didn't play his 'A' game. It would be like the NY Yankees playing small ball and bunting and sacaficing a running around the bases. It's just not what they do best.

i have a question for you guys. does throwing the ball with that much loft hurt the lanes at all? we had a huge guy do that in one of our leagues, and the managers were not too happy about it. his was more of a physical problem though so they didn't say anything. i was just curious.
