What to do with the Vertigo?
« on: January 15, 2006, 05:32:15 AM »
Ok, I've had 4 different surfaces on it now, and it's not helping one bit.  I bowled a tournament with a looong pattern reverse block today, and it did the same thing it does on a house shot.  I threw a couple shots with it in the high concentration of oil outside, and it still wasn't revving up or hitting at all.  I ended up using my Depth Charge, it revved up and had a monster backend, and it doesn't hook NEAR as much as my Vertigo does.  My Triple Xtreme was reacting nice too.  I've had box, 1500 grit polish, green scotchbrite (600 grit?) and 1500 grit wetsand on it.  The backends were kinda strong though, so I think it was still burning up too much when it hit the dry, but I haven't even had particle balls that were this touchy.  I've had a stacked Detonator that rolled awesome, and as far as big hooking solids, I had a stacked Strike Zone that rolled great, both of my stacked Super Charges were incredible, Trauma ER, Shock Trauma, etc.  If I could sell it to somebody and get a decent enough amount to just buy another Super Charge, I'll do that.  It's got a nice little gash in the track now though, so that knocks the resale value down quite a bit.  I really don't like fully plugging and redrilling stuff, but I don't quite want to give up on it yet.  I wanted a ball that was going to hook though, and if I redrill it, it's going to be quite a bit weaker, and I'd probably have overlap with my Triple Xtreme.  Suggestions?

Lol, I'm glad I'm not alone.  I know another guy that doesn't like his either.  I'm pretty disappointed myself.

Take a look at this review of the Triple Xtreme that Chris from Buddies Proshop did.  It might give you a little insight into how to lay these balls out for different styles.

How do you have it drilled?  I haven't been disappointed with my Vertigo...drilled pin 4" from PAP just below ring finger with MB below and to the right of thumb with a weight hole on PAL even with thumb.  I keep it in OOB surface (800 grit with gray scotchbrite) and clean it after every use.  The reaction is only getting better and more consistent with time.  One thing for sure though, it is a flare monster and you definitely need oil to get the most out of the ball...once things start to dry out, I do have to change due to loss of reaction (burning up).  My house typically has at least med/heavy oil for our Monday night league and I can usually get into the third game with good reaction unless there are several of us burning up the same line.

Yeah, I like the way it rolls if it'd just hook up.  My Diablo did the same thing, and it was drilled quite a bit weaker.  I've only had trouble with a couple balls drilled that way, but none of them rolled that bad.  My Vertigo doesn't rev at all though, and I think that's why it burns up on the backend, and I don't know how to get it to.  I've got to throw it slower and rev it up to get it to react correctly, (and I don't throw very fast to begin with) and that's usually something I don't have trouble with.  I'm more of a control bowler, and my reaction shape is like Mika's, I flip it at the bottom like he does, but I'm clean through it, so it glides down the lane and hooks where I want it to.  If I put more of a Parker Bohn roll on it, it does better, but gets squirty, and still doesn't hit.  Even when it reacts good it doesn't hit.  Even at that sport tournament yesterday with all that oil everywhere, it didn't rev worth anything, and then burned up.  It reacts a lot better on dry, but it just hooks too early and doesn't hit . .
