jbuzz,

Your 10 year old can't get into a PG-13 movie either unless accompanied by an adult.

Maybe it's because I'm only 24, but I could care less if one or two swear words shows up during a sporting event, because it's to be expected.  That's just what happens in sports.  Athletes aren't worried about the TV audience watching, they're worried about their performance and getting a paycheck for it.  If you don't want it be broadcasted, don't mic the athletes at all.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that a child is technically supposed to be allowed into any G, PG, or PG-13 movie without an adult.  PG-13 is just "parental guidance suggested."  R, on the other hand, is actually specifically restricted so that a minor must be accompanied by an adult.

To continue this conversation I'd like to add, I respect others opinion.  I don't have to agree and those don't have to agree with me.  I have no problem with that.  Its a belief and I try to live my life that way.  Many have different opinions and outlook on many things, so please don't think I'm trying to force my idealism on anyone.  Really I'm not.  I'm not going to sight no commandments or versus, its my opinion on why the morality of our civilization continues to decline.

I just don't know where it stops.  I guess not even when an 8 year old kills his father or a brother and sister kill their step father for the insurance money.  I know these things have gone on before but the publicity it gets is a lot more these days.  Right?

straight from the MPAA's website
"A PG-13 rating is a sterner warning by the Rating Board to parents to determine whether their children under age 13 should view the motion picture, as some material might not be suited for them. A PG-13 motion picture may go beyond the PG rating in theme, violence, nudity, sensuality, language, adult activities or other elements, but does not reach the restricted R category. The theme of the motion picture by itself will not result in a rating greater than PG-13, although depictions of activities related to a mature theme may result in a restricted rating for the motion picture. Any drug use will initially require at least a PG-13 rating. More than brief nudity will require at least a PG-13 rating, but such nudity in a PG-13 rated motion picture generally will not be sexually oriented. There may be depictions of violence in a PG-13 movie, but generally not both realistic and extreme or persistent violence. A motion picture’s single use of one of the harsher sexually-derived words, though only as an expletive, initially requires at least a PG-13 rating. More than one such expletive requires an R rating, as must even one of those words used in a sexual context. The Rating Board nevertheless may rate such a motion picture PG-13 if, based on a special vote by a two-thirds majority, the Raters feel that most American parents would believe that a PG-13 rating is appropriate because of the context or manner in which the words are used or because the use of those words in the motion picture is inconspicuous."

no mention at all of guardian/parent required.

see for yourself : http://www.mpaa.org/FlmRat_Ratings.asp

and they follow my theory too,  single use=pg-13,  multiple uses=R

jbuzz and Dan you are correct, I looked it up also.  Its a strong parental suggestion for supervision, not required.

so it falls on where you as a parent draw the line.

where a single slipup ala'  sundays match i could understand for a child under 13.
whereas your two scenarios are not something a child under 13 should witness

This is what you get when you watch cable TV. If the PBA was on CBS or ABC you would never hear it. Cursing is accepted and even encouraged on most cable channels. Even most cartoon channels have blocks of time with cartoons that curse.

The difference between cable and network TV has been blurred over the years but the rules have not changed. If you watch something on cable you will get a more adult perspective than you get on network TV.

I don't remember the last time I heard that kind of language from the NBA.

That kind of language just adds to the stigma bowlers are trying to over come.  Fouled mouthed, fat, beer guzzling non athletic bowlers portraying that bowling is really a sport.

If they don't want to watch their language, they should forego the mic.

Nic,  you left out giving the ten pin the middle finger salute!!!
And let us never forget that the "shot sucks"  "it's a bone yard"  F-ing lanes were flooded"  "Pots suck"

And of course the most important of all!!!!

"f-ing waitress call button ain't working"

Nic,  I understand where your coming from,  but in a sport made up of "hot dogs" with area,  I guess have to expect this.  For it seems to be the norm.

Now you have to admit,  it wasn't as bad as what jessie the knife said he wanted to do, to our wonderful new President Elect.

With slippery slope logic, it doesn't.  So if sh-t is "bad", how about "crap"? "feces"? "turd"? "fart"? "gas"? "methane"? "butane"? "lighter"? "darker"?

We each have individual ethics and morality that acts as a moral compass between "good" and "bad". As a group/neighborhood/church/state/country/society we have a communal ethics. Just as individual ethics and morality change over time, so does communal ethics and morality.

We can decide for ourselves, that's easy. We can decide - for a time - for our children. If you leave it up to someone else to decide for your children, in this case ESPN, don't be so surprised if you don't agree with their decisions.

Not correct... and can y'all start spelling Wes' name right, it's Malott.

Couple things to point out: Simard left an 8 pin to break his 300 not a 10 pin. I agree that the show usually goes on commercial when Simard said "Holy sh*t dude." There are much worse things that Simard could have said and it wasn't that big of a deal anyways. Everybody swears. You can read the lips of the athletes on the NFL, NBA, etc. and I have seen numerous times when they have said much worse than "Holy sh*t dude." Simard almost shot 300 on national tv, how is that not exciting? If that was me I would've probably said much worse when Wes came over.

It's not that big of a deal and overprotective parents need to realize that this stuff just happens in the real world.
