Easy slide or baby powder on shoes: Just dont do it!
« on: November 07, 2006, 12:21:16 AM »
Hey everyone,

I think a lot of people already know this, but I figured I'd toss out a quick word of warning, just in case some don't. When you put easy slide or, heaven forbid, baby powder on your shoes, it screws the approaches up for EVERYONE!

Last night during league, I noticed during practice that the approach on the left lane was remarkably slick. In talking with the house staff, I learned that an open bowler likes to dump a whole bunch of baby powder on the floor and then step in it before each shot, to increase his slide. Well, despite their best efforts to clean the approaches, the baby powder remained in the wood and made conditions completely terrible.

I had to use a No. 4 sole on the left lane. FYI, I normally can't even practice with the No. 4 because it grabs so hard I just about fly over the line. For me, wearing that sole is damn near the same as wearing a gym shoe. Since this open bowler only bowled on one lane, the other approach was normal, so I literally had to change soles between frames the entire night.

So, I guess my point in all of this is to say, please don't use powder of any kind on your shoes. You may not realize it, but doing so alters the environment for everyone around you. If you're having that much trouble sliding, use a slide sock or change to shoes that give you more. That way, the changes you make only affect you. I thank you for your support in this matter, and I know other bowlers will as well : )

Now I think if the stuff is used properly there is no problem. To tell a Season bowler not to use easy slide because some yahoo has no idea what they are doing is not fair. I use easy slide once in a while, but I talk with the people I am bowling against first. The when I use it I pat my shoe twice to apply. I then use my hand to rub it in so that a majority of the excess will come off. Then I test it to make sure it is okay by sliding my foot at the end of the approach as close to the Ball Return as possible.

On a side note I won a strike pot and I used the money to order a pair of SST6's and hope to eliminate the need for my easy slide.

I dont see a problem with using either. If, of course, it's used minimally. We allow its use but are very strict on the amount used.
Frankly, your house should step up and stop said cat from using so much. Dumping it on the floor and rubbing his shoe in it? That s**t doesnt fly. lol.

So say the people who had one terrible experience with a pig who used Easy Slide. So say the people who never have any trouble sliding.

Please re-consider your prejudice.

I think anyone that puts anything on their shoes should have their as- kicked. You think its ok to jeopardies all the other bowlers on your pair and the adjoing lanes for your stupidity? If you have trouble sliding, then get a pair of shoes you can change your soles on.

I wore linds for years and then changed to Ultra Tours. Best thing I have ever done.

Gene,
You should have benched pressed this guy for putting the others at risk.

Charlest I normally respect your opinions but have to differ with you here.

The rule.

Approaches Must Not Be Defaced
Rule 12. The application of any foreign substance on any part of the approach that detracts from the
possibility of other players having normal conditions is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to talcum
powder, pumice and resin on shoes, and/or soft rubber soles or heels that rub off on the approach. [CAQ #11]

This doesn't say a "reasonable amount' but prohibited.

If you have slide issues get a slide sock, teflon sole, better shoes, something but don't apply anything to the sole.

Well, then, if I can't use ezslide, does anyone want my equipment?

It doesn't say you CANT use EZ Slide..  It just says you can't use it on your shoes or on the approaches..  You can use it on your fingers or thumb all you want..  Just don't put that crap on your shoes or approach...

Pinbuster got to it while I was watching Nick's video.  I knew there is a rule about applying foreign substances to shoes during sanctioned play.  Those who use these substances (EZSlide, baby powder) are subject to having their scores forfeited.  I rarely see this rule enforced, but for the safety of all involved it should be.

Let me rephrase.  If I cannot use EZSlide on my shoes, who wants my equipment?

The rule is obviously open to interpretation since some places let you use it even after others have complained, and other places will warn you, then disqualify you if you continue.  You can't deface the approach, but what does that entail exactly?

I have SST 6's (red heel, #10 sole with a teflon pad most of the time) and occasionally use EZ Slide.  A small tap (one) on the shoe and rubbed in does nothing to deface the approach.  Have two approaches cleaned to your satisfaction.  Let me do my system and bowl a game on one lane.  I DEFY anyone to tell me which lane I did it on.  Obviously using a bunch of it or putting it on the approach or where others can step in it is a big no-no.  But the rule as written does not tell you that you can't use EZ Slide on your shoe.

While, I don't like easyslide, etc, the fact is, sometimes no matter what you do you cannot slide wihout it.  The problem is not with using it, but the fact that most bowlers don't know how to use it properly.  Strider is absolutely correct,  If used properly, it will not affect anyone else, nor will you deface the approaches by leaving residue.

Bottom line,  IF you re going to use easyslide, learn how to use it properly, or don't use it.
