PBA Oil Pattern Difficulty ratings
« on: September 08, 2008, 07:50:31 AM »
Hello all,
Can I get some opinions please. For your eveyday League bowlers, can you rate these patterns in order from hardest to easiest. I was just looking for a shot a little more challenging than your typical house shot, but nothing that is going to be too tough.

Thank you

Chameleon - 40 feet
Cheetah - 36 feet
Scorpion - 42 feet
Shark - 44 feet
Viper - 38 feet

The way I tend to play the lanes, my ratings are as follows:
From easiest to most difficult

1. Viper
2. Cheetah
3. Shark
4. Scorpion
5. Chameleon

This is based on last years patterns.  I haven't bowled enough on the modified new ones yet.  Easiest to hardest.

Scorpion
Cheetah
Chameleon
Shark
Viper

I am surprised to see so many people say the Chameleon is the hardest (I'm thinking because people aren't comfortable getting deep?). I would say:

1. Scorpion
2. Chameleon
3. Viper
4. Cheetah
5. Shark

Cheetah
Viper
Chameleon
Scorpion
Shark

Easiest to hardest for me. I've been averaging over 210 on the Cheetah/Viper and about 175 on the Shark...

Viper
Chameleon
Scorpion
Cheetah
Shark

From easiest to hardest. My good games have been on the Viper and Chameleon but struggled alot on the Shark, barely get a 500 series off of that pattern.

For me, easiest to hardest was:

Chameleon
Cheetah
Scorpion
Shark
Viper

So many factors.  Lane type and surface, lane machine and oil, how effective the stripper is, running tapes to make sure it was applied right...  And after all of that, each bowler's statistics will help them match up better to different things.

I would think Viper would be a good place to start.  It's about the same length as many league shots and it can be attacked from all parts of the lane.  I think I did much better on Viper last year (different house), but I wouldn't shy away from a tournament on Viper at the same house I struggled at.

Thanks for the input. So it looks like the Viper would be a nice step up from a typical "House shot"? They put out the Chameleon and high scores were around the 220's. But it gave lots of bowlers a head ache. Viper may be a little friendlier? But I hope not too easy. Nothing crazy like 279's or 289's.

It really depends on the lane surface.  For example, for me, Cheetah on wood is much easier than on synthetics.  I can't seem to find the right combination of ball roll, speed and entry angle on the synthetics.

It depends on every bowler individually because some you play deep some you play straight up so they are not the same difficulty for everyone

In my PBA Experience league on synthetic lanes...

Chameleon
Scorpion
Shark
Viper
Cheetah

The Cheetah pattern absolutely kicked my azz up and down.  I just could not find a line to the pocket, worst over/under reaction I've ever seen.  The longer patterns treated me well, and I had a good look some of the time on the Viper, but not consistently.
