Six Frame PBA Bowling
« on: July 05, 2005, 03:07:04 AM »
Anyone see this format Sunday on ESPN?  200K, winner took all.
Chris B. won.
Six frames.  In the final match, spares don't count and the first one to get to six strikes wins.

I watched it too; and I enjoyed it for what it was...a shootout.  Mind you, it wasn't 6 frame PBA bowling.  It was 6 frame Motel6 bowling. I'm sure you are aware, the participants standings didn't change as a result of the event.

The participants of this forum love to talk about the direction of the game, and discuss the various reasons for it's decline, either in popularity or respect by the general public.  The greatest influence for the future of the sport on a macro level will come from money (sad but true).  Event purse size is the key.  Purity and love of competition will have to take a back seat until some arbitrary but tangible level of acceptance and participation is achieved.

This Motel6 thing is great!  Hopefully this wasn't an anomaly, and other sponsors will start to cough up the bucks for either special events, or (even better) tour events.

I liked it too.  It was a nice change from the regular 4-person single-elimination finals.  I think they should have more, different tournaments and formats.  Don't know if I like the winner-take-all part, though.  It might be ok to do that in such a short-format tourney, but do it more often and for less prize money.  Maybe take the last X winners and have a shootout for additional money.  I think they used to do something like that, the Ebonite Challenge (?).

Not to hijack this thread, but if the PBA tour starts to do more of these events or changes the PBA style form how it is now to winner take all. I think that it will ruin the PBA tour. Less bowlers will participate because some will know that they don't have a chance to win or will not even get any money if they place somewhat high. It is fine to have it once or twice in a season, but more than that I think it will ruin the PBA tour.

Patrick Allen said some thing like this in a article on PBA.com
