Who is a bowling coach on here?
« on: August 04, 2007, 02:27:37 AM »
This was sparked by the "Gold Certification?" thread.  I am curious just how many are coaches. If you coach bowlers:

Are you certified? If so what level of certification?

Do you coach as a volunteer or are you paid for your services?

If you are paid, what do you charge?

How do you sleep at night?   Or a better question is who pays that much for bowling instruction?????

I'm not nearly the most expensive.  Carol Norman charges more, but she has more formal coaching education, uses video and computer software.  I think Carolyn Dorin Ballard is in the $75 an hour range.  Her and Del are top notch!!  I have taken lessons from Carol myself, she is pretty awesome.  She taught the Bronze class that I took.  There are many people in the Houston area that pay that much for lessons.  There is a need for better coaches all over the country.  Like many things, you get what you pay for.

If you can't convey/communicate to the bowler in some shape or form you won't be a good instructor.

I've seen some great instructors and many more poor ones.  The ones that are poor are not good communicators.

The really great instructors leave you with the feeling of excitement to get to the next level.  You'll know when you get this feeling that you have found a great instructor.

Last time I took a formal lesson it cost me $70 and that was about 8 years ago.

If a guy knows his stuff, he's worth it.  The certification is nice, but I know a number of excellent coaches that have no certification that can run circles around those that do.

I pay more. Plus drive over an hour each way to see her.   Though now that my coach has moved out of the area, I'm looking for another.

I guess its all in how much value you put in good instruction.  If you don't think you need instruction then more power to you.

I am certified Level 1, or at least I was at one point.

I am capable of using the Ebonite BowlersMAP program.

I am also certified by Classic Products Advanced and Basic Ball Drilling/Fitting Seminars by Mike Riggins.

I have also been through the Player Development Drills Seminar (2007 in Vegas) with Bob Maki and Cary Pon

I usually charge between 20 and 50 depending on the lesson and the time of the week.

My mom is Ritger Level 3, USBC Bronze, and I think Level 1 certified.  She was Michigan High School State Athletic Association coach of the year in 2005-2006 I believe.  I don't know what she charges for lessons, but we both volunteer for our Youth USBC Programs and give free lessons as well.

We also own the bowling center we work at, Marshall Lanes in Marshall, MI

Also, I would pay more than 70 dollars to go to a certified instructor and get formal coaching from them.  I am looking into going to the TurboTech center in Michigan to see Louis Marquez.  I think it is like 250 for 3 hrs.

hi thongprincess,

as a pro shop owner/operator, i give a courtesy 15 minute lesson to all customers who buy a ball and have it drilled by me.

as a coach, i'm bronze certified and charge $25 per 1/2 hr. and $40 per hour.
however, i do volunteer my time during the saturday morning junior league.

hope this helps.

To those who have responded, thank you.  It is nice to see so many who give back to the sport by coaching Juniors.

Lisa-
I commend you on working with the "little" ones.  I used to coach the bumper and just off bumpers group back in the late 80s early 90s.  Today I'm not sure I'd have the patience to work with them, though they are cute to watch

Any coaches who have not responded, feel free to add to this.

I coached junior bowling for 12 yrs.
In the beginning I was paid $20 a session plus free bowling.
Then with new management it became free bowling for me.
I ended up switching centers when my daughter became involved in sports at school.
Coached until she gave up bowling.
Now I coach bowlers when asked.
The fee varies.

I've taken lessons from Mike Shady before.
Good coach.
Also taken a couple of classes from Boomershine and Sand.
Well worth the money.
Still got free games to use up before the season.

I am not a certified coach, but have been looking into it for awhile now. But for the last 13 years I have been helping with the youth programs that are in the area that we live.

The only thing that I hope for is that I am able to help those who want it. I also have learned alot from the students and other coaches during that time. I feel that no matter what certification you may have or experience, you can always learn something new from a very unlikely source. So keep your eyes and ears open, there is something around that you might benefit from.
