Who is a bowling coach on here?
« on: August 04, 2007, 02:27:37 AM »
This was sparked by the "Gold Certification?" thread.  I am curious just how many are coaches. If you coach bowlers:

Are you certified? If so what level of certification?

Do you coach as a volunteer or are you paid for your services?

If you are paid, what do you charge?

TP -- I do some coaching, usually when I drill a ball for someone that needs it.  I have no training other than almost 45 years of bowling experience.  We do have a lady that has her bronze level training, and I refer bowlers that need more than I can provide in 30 minutes or so to her.  I don't charge for any coaching I do.  I think she charges $20 per hour.  --  JohnP

I got my level 1 certification a year agp and have coached three learn to bowls for kids ages 6-10 since this past fall.  The classes are run through a local park district, the parents of the kids all pay a set fee for the class and i get paid my normal hourly rate by the center to coach them.  In all i'd say its by far the most fun i have out of all the work i do at my center.  I plan on getting a bronze certification soon.

I am a level 1 certified coach and will do level 2 if they ever decide to have a class locally again.

I always give a lesson or 2 with every ball I drill regardless of the customer.

I give multiple lessons for the youth bowlers when they buy a ball. Yes, they end up paying for the service but it end up being worth it in the long run. Parents are not happy that I charge $20 more than the other "local" shops for a plastic ball but then again none of the other local shops give lessons or a free refit for the first year from date of purchase.

When I am asked to coach, the fee is on a sliding scale that depends on the age
of the bowler, the skill level, whether or not they are a pro shop customer of mine and what they are struggling with. Some things are easy fixes and others are not so why charge a flat rate?

I also do volunteer in a coaching capacity for our Saturday Junior leagues.

I am Bronze level certified.  I coached many of my customers informally for free.  Formal lessons are $50 an hour.

Thong, I have to give you kudos for removing the subject to a more defined thread.  As I stated in the previous thread, I think a good amount of those taking the Level 1, 2 and Bronze are doing so for the benefit of the youth programs out there.

This is something that I did not have when I was in youth programs, or most other bowlers who are in my generation and before, and soon after for that matter.  I think the impact of certified coaches working with the youth today will only strengthen our sport.  Of course then there will be those that still say the scoring pace is too high, the shot is too easy witbout taking into account the benefits the youth have today with educated coaching to get them those higher scores because they are taught the basics so early.

I'm Bronze level.  Don't really enjoy coaching youth that much unless they are older, but enjoy teaching bowling to any that want to learn.  I'm not a parent, don't want to be even a part time parent by babysitting any number of kids that are bowling on any particular afternoon or Saturday.  As a certified coach I don't think I'm fully utilized by making sure that Joey puts down his French Fries & soda and bowls when his turn is up....on the correct lane. I leave that up to those that have a calling for it.  Now if anyone no matter what age, really wants to learn to bowl then I'm all for that.  So I basically coach adults and those youth that really want to learn.

Most Silver Level coaches are wasted on the majority of the youth, bowling on a weekly basis.  But I do think that Level 1, 2 and Bronze are the basic minimum that those wanting to coach the youth should obtain.

Atochabsh -
Thanks, it seemed the "Gold Certification?" was getting way off topic and, as I stated, I was curious.  I did try to keep the topic here very focused so as not to start another debate.

I am a Bronze level coach, as my sig says.  I coach Juniors Saturday mornings.  My preference is the Middle School group.  Most of the coaches do not particularly care for this group, I love them.  I coach the youth as a volunteer, though they do give us 9 free games per week.

I have just started coaching adults for a fee.  I was going to charge $20/hr, but my coach said I shouldn't charge less than $25/hr as a Bronze coach.  My first 2 athletes are long time friends so they are only charged $10/hour.  Any adult seeking lessons are told $15/half hour or $25/hour.

I was going to coach all youth for free, but have been advised to charge a minimal fee of maybe $5 for lessons outside of the Saturday youth program.

Once I get familiar with the Motion Analysis program I have, I may charge a little more for video and analysis.  That is a down the line service.

I was in the first bronze certification at ABC/WIBC hdqrs. when it was run by the USTBF/Bob Maki.  Gave it up.  Good luck to all.

Check his profile, he has PBA Regional Titles, State Titles and is a member of a HOF.  Name recognition in the area and being a Pro Shop guy makes him a marketable coach.

You also have to consider different economic environments.  If the bowlers feel they are getting their money's worth, they will pay whatever is necessary.
