Will shipping charges inadvertently level the field?
« on: June 28, 2008, 06:09:13 AM »
I watch e-bay pretty regularly, and have noticed lately, that shipping charges keep going up, andup, and UP.  I have seen as high as $45 for a single 15lb ball.

while I used to be able to save $40-$60 with online purchases from e-bay, this has been cut by the additional shipping fees I have to pay by usually 50%.

There are still some online shops with free shipping above a certain price point, but how long is this going to continue?  And, if free shipping continues, are online shops going to have to raise their prices to the point that they are no longer the great valus they had been?

No doubt shipping rates have went up but for someone to charge $45 for shipping a single 15 pound ball is just ridiculous..

I have quit buying on Ebay because of the shipping costs sellers charge..

I don't see the free shipping of some sites thing lasting much longer..

IMO I believe it's not the shipping charges...

Right now it's Summer and while the demand for bowling balls is there, it's not as high as it would be in the Fall or Spring.

Therefore I think because alot of stuff doesn't get bid on as much, people are raising shipping prices to cover that lost amount.

I'm in Grand Forks, ND and I just shipped a ball Fedex to the southern part of California this past week and it only cost $19.

Don't forget there's no such thing as "free shipping". The shipping has already been added in. "Free shipping" is a lie or, if you're in "marketing", it's not a lie. Situational ethics?? Correctly put, there's no additional charge for shipping, but "we may screw you by adding a handling charge, also known as extra profit".

It saves the seller a lot of overhead. However, if you're close, physically, to where they are shipping the balls from, you will lose out, because the normal added shipping cost will be less than the average cost of shipping that was added in to the advertised price. If you live further away, you get the best deal from this situation, because normally your shipping costs will be highest.

It's all a balancing act There's no "free lunch"

Local pro shops have to pay shipping too.  It's going to affect all prices eventually.  --  JohnP

When proshops ship in bulk they get a large discount, but online comapanies are paying to ship it from the distrubitor or manufactuer to themselves, and to themselves to the customer.

I don't pay for shipping.  My dist. is local and he delivers to me once a week and I pick up a second time that week.

I haven't sold very much on ebay, but I believe you don't have to pay fees on your shipping charge, so If a person wantes to sell something for $50, they can charge $1 with a $49 shipping charge and save themselves almost all of the ebay fees.  Not to mention hoping that a bidder won't pay attention to what the total cost will be and may overbid.

I continue to buy from Ebay, judiciously, because I figure whatever the advertised shipping and handling charge may be, it is just part of the cost of buying the ball, just like it is whenever you buy anything online or via a catalog. It's the bottom line that is and should be of any impoortance to the buyer. What do you care what the seller's profit margin or what it may be based upon, as long as you can justify the purchase based on the final cost to you?

I still buy eBay cause it is better than almost all proshops.  I just bought a ultra zone for 71 bucks shipped nib. Cost me 50 bucks to drill with all inserts. I don't know anywhere you can buy that ball nib with drilling for 120 bucks
