Todays Show - Spoiler

Yes today's show was pretty brutal to watch.  But I felt bad for Kretzer that they cut to commercial for his final shots.  Poor guy finally wins a tournament and you don't get to see him finish it out.  At least they showed him holding the trophy for a second during the fade out sequence.

That is why you need to add the amat bowlers from the hosting house.
when people see that the "local bad boy" didn't bowl worth a crap then they might see that there is something to this.

Baseball game score 1-0 = pitchers duel
Football game score 10-3 = defensive struggle
Golf tournament winner +1 = tough course for shotmakers

For some reason when bowling is below 240 you people need to b**ch and moan and cry about how boring it is.  Enjoy what you're getting to see...the best in the world at what they do.  None of you (and by none I mean NONE) can hold a candle to their talent, I don't give a s**t about how much you hook it during league.

I agree the show wasn't fun to watch yesterday, but not every football game makes you jump out of your seats either.  Be glad you have something to watch...because I can guarantee you if we don't find a way to support the game and PROMOTE it...we won't.

It is one thing to be under 240 Russell, with all due respect when guys are whiffing single pins like they are goin outta style its hard to make your argument. Yeah they are the best in the world, but when they miss easy spares like every league bowler in america does every night of the week, it makes your argument hard to defend.

How often you see Tiger make a mistake on t.v. whiffing a drive like all the other hacks on the courses week in and week out? Very seldom right??

I agree they are the best in the world, but when they miss basic spares on tv, from the WSOB to sunday, that is not helping the PBA one bit, no matter how much i hook the ball in my mixed handicapped league.

I for one will be complaining about the guys that drove it into the ground. If people watched hour after hour of curling during the Winter Olympics, surely someone with a little marketing smarts could sell bowling successfully - LOL

+1

Over the last several years people complained the scores were too high. People think the sport is easy cause everyone is shooting high scores. Then when they toughen them up, the same people complain that is it boring to watch, or that people will think they are as good as the pros cause they bowl better then them in their leagues. So which is it???

Face it, the PBA tour will never be like it was 25-30 years ago when it was ABC. Times have changed, and the PBA is trying to change with it. They are trying new formats, like the Match-Play tournament this week to coinside with the NCAA tournament to try and liven things up. Just like I thought the behind the scenes show earlier this was a good idea, so was this. I would not want to see either every week, but as one of idea they are fine. The WSOB was also not that bad an idea. The execution this year wasn't the greatest, i.e. took too long to complete everything, the bowling center's "arena" bay was too worn for this type of event, etc. But it saved the bowler's money, saved the PBA money, and allowed the exempt players to get to spend a little more time with their families then in the past. All good ideas. We have to remember the PBA is a business. Just like Football and Baseball. But the PBA doesn't get millions and millions of dollars in TV money every year to offset losses by the owners. Without the money sharing that the NFL and MLB have, a lot of teams would probably have folded as they would lose money otherwise.

Bottom-line: If you don't like what the PBA is doing, find sponsors and dollars that are willing to put up enough money based on what you think the PBA should be doing and I will guarantee you they will follow that advice. Otherwise stick a sock in it and enjoy what we have and realize they are doing the best they can with what is available.

Every week, you see the professional golfers drive it into the water or the woods. Saying Tiger Woods is like singling out WRW Jr., which isn't true in either case. How about NASCAR drivers who miss a shift and lose a race, or miss their pit stall....again happens every week. These people are the best at their sport, no doubt. But they are human too, they make mistakes. And when you are the best at your sport, and you are playing against others at that level, the pressure to perform is even greater, leading to a heightened chance of making a mistake. So they missed a single pin. So they missed a spare. BFD!!! They are still better then anyone on these boards, myself included. And I would wager they are better then everyone who posted on this thread all rolled into one. And if you can't see that, then you are a maroon. End of story.

The people that drove it into the ground is you, and the rest of the people complaining on this thread. You didn't support the sponsors of the tour enough. You didn't go to Denny's and say "Hey, I saw your commercial on the bowling show this weekend, and I came in here to support you because of that."
The people running the PBA are trying things to save it, yet all you do is sit here and complain.

As far as Curling goes, try going to Canada and see how the Curling players are treated. They are treated like celebrities, even one of the guys who makes the ice is well-known there. They are Stars!! People don't sit around and complain on internet forums about them like you are doing here. And if you think I am wrong, rewatch the "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbal" episode that talks about Curling. Not even a close comparison, just because you don't like Curling or understand it doesn't mean everyone else in the world thinks like you.

Seems like the PBA has few bowlers that are supporting themselves through bowling. I was trying to come up with a way where there could be MORE bowlers surviving. Here's a thought:

Every third week have a tournament that would be available to those who finished 4-10 in the prior three weeks. If there are duplicates extended the 10th to 12,13,etc.

This would give more PBA members a bigger chance at making money. Also gives the top finishers a week off to spend with family!

The idea is to give an incentive to stay with the game! I guess you could call it a LOSER'S TOURNAMENT!

I understand your analogies, but some may not due to the visual aspect of the sports you describe. In the baseball game, you see the dominance of the pitchers striking out the batters (exciting). In football, you see and hear the hard hits when both defenses laying on the wood (think Ravens-Steelers) (exciting). In golf, you see the course (I'm not into golf - boring). The problem with bowling is that the casual fan doesn't see the reason why the scores are low, where the oil is laying, where the small area of breakpoint the pro has to hit in order to strike, etc. When I watch pros miss and struggle (as opposed to getting tapped), it makes for a boring show in my eyes. I can appreciate what they are going through, but it makes me want to turn the channel sometimes.

So you think that show Sunday "helped" a potential sponsor make his mind up about chipping money into the PBA? And im sure "Joe" Bowler who tuned in to watch the best bowlers in the world struggle to shoot 170 has more respect for them now, right?

Give me a break man, watching them shoot on these horrible lane surfaces and struggle to shoot even close to 200 is just as bad as a carry fest whether you have your blinders on or not.

Im not complaining at all, i have no say so over what surface they bowl on, what center they bowl at either. But to be taken seriously as a sport, the participants must at least make single pin spares that every Saturday morning Bumper-league coach teaches week in and week out. Just because they are professionals doesnt mean they get a pass when they aren't preforming basic bowling fundementals.

Honestly, with the horrible surfaces/conditions we have seen this year on television, you cant honestly say the PBA is better off now than it was this time last year can you??

Exactly my point Buck, if we lose viewers because of horrible lane conditions/surfaces causing the players to miss easy spares, then they might as well close up shop now because thats sending the wrong message when the "best" struggle to shoot 170 while mixed leagues have 20 people over 230 in avg!!!

This is why I blame the USBC, not the PBA.  The USBC has to mandate tougher oil patterns for any sanctioned league so that the elite in the sport actually look like they are the best.

And I am tired of hearing about all league bowlers will quit and blah, blah, blah.  If Bowling wants to be a sport, then it should be hard.  If not then it shouldn't try to come off as one.

As a hockey player I can't go on the ice and tell people to slow down or shoot softer because I want an easy game tonight.

I personally dont understand why people complained about scores being too high.  I personally dont ever want to watch pros shooting sub 200, ever.

I think the shots should be made just a TAD easier for the TV shows.  Who wants to watch pro bowlers shoot scores in the 180s?  Granted, i get that the shots are tough & carry is a problem sometimes, but i dont want to see pros shooting what any house bowler can shoot on any given night.

I want games like 280 to 279 for the title, not 185 to 192 BS.
