Todays Show - Spoiler
« on: March 21, 2010, 09:09:23 AM »
Yes today's show was pretty brutal to watch.  But I felt bad for Kretzer that they cut to commercial for his final shots.  Poor guy finally wins a tournament and you don't get to see him finish it out.  At least they showed him holding the trophy for a second during the fade out sequence.
Current Equipment
Alpha Jackal
Jackal Flash
Primal Shock
Rogue Assassin
Revolt Havoc
Revolt Vengeance
Venom Shock
Blue Coral Venom
Fatal Venom
Dessert Tank

Despite the historical show where KK won the TOC, this has been the absolute worst season on TV. The formats and shows are getting worse. I think today's telecast was hands down the absolute worst PBA telecast ever. I didn't even bother to transfer it to DVD - as if I'd ever want to watch it again? If this is what the PBA has to offer going forward, let it die now. I'll just play all the shows from the past and remember the "good 'ol days." Nothing against Kretzer - he rose to the top playing the shark/cheetah combo better than anyone else, but the match play format has just got to go away. Let's get back to the 14 qualifying, 24 match play, and stepladder finals.

I LIKED seeing the "big boys" have to grind it out. Sure ... it was brutal to watch at times, but we have ALL gone through what they went through today. Plus, I like a 3 game series total pinfall format ...

I agree 110%... Seeing the same 2 guys on TV fo 3 games was stupid IMO. I want them to bring back the top 5 like they used to have. That was some of the best shows whrn the 5th seed went thru the field to win the tourny..

I do give kudos to Kretzer as he won his first tourny and even better he is from my home town (Dayton, OH) but PA was not very lucky today with all those 7 pins he left while trying to come back from an 80 pin deficit the 3rd game..

I think the PBA days are numbered and am sure thier ratings are worse this year than in past years by quite a bit..

Yeah, there is nothing better than the stepladder top 5. I would enjoy something like this over a summer series, because as a hardcore bowler I love watching how the pro's go through the grind and adjust, but in order to build the sport the telecast first has to be interesting to the non-hardcore bowler and the show today probably turned off a lot of would be bowling fans.

As seems to be the case this year, my wife came through the room almost every time someone missed a spare on the TV, and she would say: "These guys are supposed to be pros?"

The USBC and PBA are determined to make bowling harder ("to protect the integrity of the sport") but all they are doing is convincing the general public that the professional bowlers are a joke.

Pretty much my thoughts on the matter. Make it as hard as you want in qualifying and then make the show as wide open as possible for both sides. I know how good they are and that's all that matters to me.

One thing's for sure - nobody's ever going to believe that PBA stars are "athletes" after today. All they were missing to round it out was the Traber Bros.

I don't care how good a "Pro" is, a single pin spare should NEVER be missed!  I miss my fair share, but I'm not a pro.  I've seen this too many times on TV this season.  Sean Rash is a prime example.

I said this same thing about a month ago -- how many times and how many different ways did we see the 3-6-10 spare missed this year? That's a spare that even a rank amateur should get 7 out of 10 times. Kretzer missed it once and would have missed it a second time without a supremely lucky break. I think the make rate for it on TV this year has been 50/50 at best.

Congrats to Kretzer, though, for finally getting his first title.

In my opinion almost all of the PBA experiments this year have been faulures.
They should leave the game alone.  What I have always liked are x number of
games of qualifying, cut to 56 for more qualifying, cut to 24 for round robin
match games and 5 man step ladder finals.  Worked for years.  All of these
new efforts to attract new viewers have failed.  If you want to attract new
viewers try not competing with the NFL timeslots.

Prior to the season, there was a lot of talk here about how the WSOB was not what we, the fans, wanted. There was a lot of shouting-down going on here -- "Give it a chance," "stop being so judgmental," etc.

Well, the season is almost over and soon it's going to be time to give an honest assessment of this season, and as far as I'm concerned it's been rocky at best.

The WSOB was a disaster. Tape-delayed shows stink on general principle. Then there was the "documentary-style" show featuring Ciminelli vs. Duke, which was so awful I barely got through it.

The Match Play Championship the last two years has been great -- until TV day. The concept is neat but it doesn't execute well on television. The crowd never gets into it, you see the same two guys for 2.5 hours and it's just boring.

The Plastic Ball Championship was the exception. I'm looking forward to it again this week, because it gets guys out of their comfort zone. There was also one tournament last year that featured four guys in the first match (Chris Warren's last show) that was good because it got more people onto TV, but they didn't repeat it this year.

Stepladder is the most fair way to handle things, with the dual semifinal shows a close second. This year, they tried so much stuff, no one ever got into a rhythm. I can't understand why the WSOB is coming back next year, either. It smacks of pride -- i.e., the idea sucks and everyone knows it, but whoever cooked it up is too proud to admit their mistake.
