You Call That Bowling
« on: November 26, 2007, 04:33:20 AM »
I normally look forward to Sunday afternoons when the PBA is on. I enjoy watching the top bowlers in the world compete against each other. Sunday wasn’t one of those times.

What was the PBA thinking when they put that oil pattern down?

Who else on earth besides Robert Smith could throw the ball 15 feet onto the lane and still have it hook as much as what I saw!

I thought it was a contest between who could execute the best shot not who had the physical strength to loft the ball the furthest.

I was pulling for Brad Angelo to win. Not that I don’t dislike Smith but I thought Angelo play smart. He kept up with the transition of the lanes (for the most part) and made adjustments or switched balls to keep up with the lack of oil.

Then Smith walks out there and heaves the ball to win.

It was a bad day for bowling.

How about test the abilities not their strength next time.

I was pulling for Angelo as well, BUT.. Looked to me like Smith was the one to be able to execute the best shot on that pattern..

being physically fit is a big part of bowling, to play as many games as one dose on tour, you better be in shape for sure..

On Synthetics it's ok to loft it that much, but on wood then your going to damage the lanes, the heads are stronger then the mids are and lofting it to the arrows is coming close to crossing that line. There was a regional event a few years ago where a guy named Mike Norris from the Central region played the lanes the way Robert did and shot 300, someone complained to the director at the time and he watched him throw a few shots and said there was nothing wrong since he wasn't landing past the arrows where he could've done the most damage to the lanes.

Question for the bowling proprietors: Would you like someone lofting the balls out to the arrows because they saw the “pro’s” do it on TV?[/quote]

That & how many bowlers will dress like Richie Allen?  Headbands here they come? LOL.

B,

I actually couldn't agree with you more.  I was so excited to see RB bowl, but when I saw what was going on with his loft, I couldn't be more disappointed.  It was certainly impressive, but I guess I just don't know how to express my disappointment.  For the first time I was pushing for Angelo.  Yikes, this post must seem confusing, but that is exactly how I felt watching the finals.

Like I said in an earlier post. Smith felt that lofting the gutter cap was the best way for him to win. There is no way I would ever hope Brad Angelo beats Robert Smith.

Mika is fully capable of lofting it that far and probably has in the process of winning one of his many titles, whether it be PBA or international.

Lofting it 16 feet and winning?  I know that Tommy Jones has done that quite a bit on the Regional Circuit.  I know of a tournament here in Atlanta where in the final match, he was standing on the left lane when bowling on the right lane, lofting the first 8-10 feet of the left gutter swinging out to 10-12 at the breakpoint, and shot in the 250s to win.  It does happen.

whats wrong with a different method of throwing the ball? Would you gutter cap it like that if you need to, to win? I think you would. And by the way lofting like that really isn't a test of strength is is just holding onto the ball a little longer and to hit your mark like that takes alot more skill than throwing the ball normally and hitting your mark trust take it from some one who has atttempted to do shots like that before

Look at how far left Brad was with a lot less hand where was Rob supposed to play? Right of him? here is an idea go bowl one game tomorrow and play that same line it does not matter if you strike or not just go by feel. Tell me how many shots you miss right, how many shots you miss left, how many shots you hit up on to much, and how many shots you miss at the bottom. Yes Robert tried several different shots in practice, but there is a reason he chose to play where he did. The straighter players didn't have that great of a look from out. Mika had a pretty good line once he moved way out but let's face it, when Mika is on he rarely ever misses.

Playing that line when the pattern is broken down on the shark pattern for high rev players is not that uncommon.

Can't you guys ever congratulate somebody when they win something. Let's face it  most of you couldn't shoot 150 on that pattern for that amount of money.

I was personally glad to see it because it echoes some of the stuff I have been dealing with in these PBA Experience leagues.

Hopefully this thread is not a criticism of Smith, but a criticism of the oil pattern on that surface or something.

What Smith did was awesome to get over there and score like that when he had to.

I think the oil pattern was fine.  It showed who can adapt or adjust.  Smith was better, but Angelo did well.  The telecast gave everyone a different look on how these guys can play anywhere on the lane.  I thought that was awesome.
