Are the Duke rumors true or BS?
« on: February 11, 2009, 05:08:35 AM »
I'm just curious if the rumors about Duke burning up Fagans line during practice before the final match are true?

I wasn't their but watched it on TV.  I saw Duke practicing the outside line on TV right before they broke for commercial.  After the commercial time out the players were done practicing.

Probably not true. It seemed the oil moved so quickly that it was inevitable.

A spectator on the PBA forums that was there in attendance said that Duke was "chasing Fagan's line" in pre-match warm-ups with a screen sanded ball.  Take whichever side you may wish.  Norm struck alot anyways.

During the commercial breaks, it's not unusual for Duke and all the other PBA players to try other lines just in case their "look" disappears.  Randy Pederson always mentions that that's what they all do.

Very common.

I totally understand that but was curious if he intentionally took a sanded ball and tried to screw up Fagans line?

I've seen where some roll plastics to drag some oil to form a hold area, but I've never seen anyone burn a lane during the practice shots for the program.

I've seen Duke use a sanded ball to create some bumper area for himself.  I've only seen him do this on the outside part of the lane.  I've never seen him use a sanded ball inside to create a bumper.

This comment in Duke's defense is like a THB blaming his shoe for missing the 10-pin.

Hello......as I've said before, this is common practice!  And how do you know he, or all the other pros that try different lines before they bowl their match, was trying to mess up his line?  Were you there?  They all try different lines before their matches just in case if they have to make a drastic move on the lanes.  Besides, even if it was done on purpose, who cares?  Whatever it takes, baby!  You're just blind and oblivious to the FACT that this is a common practice on tour.  The pros I talked to at the 2004 Masters admitted to it.

LEARN TO LIKE IT, baby!

I would think that if Duke was going to dry up an area on the lane he would of used the 8 min to dry up the outside to give himself bumper room to the right.

I also didn't see Fagan getting upset with Duke at all during the show.  I personally find it hard to believe this rumor.  However, I wasn't their so who knows.

If I saw someone bowling great with a particular line, I most certainly would want to see what was there and if I could use it to my advantage.

I respect Duke as a bowler and love watching him on TV. That being said, I have a question. Why do so many people feel the need to defend Duke to the bitter end as if he can do no wrong? It boggles my mind, to be honest. Whenever someone insinuates that Duke may have done something that could be considered shady, 9 million people rush to his aid as if the critics are being totally out-of-line.

I've heard a lot of good things about Norm, but I've also heard some first-hand horror stories. Nobody's perfect. So for those of you who have never met the man, why defend him as if he has no flaws?

I was there, watching it live. He was not burning up Fagan's line. He was using a dull Street Rod Pearl on his own line.
