Black Ops
« on: October 30, 2015, 08:52:19 PM »
Got to drill and roll a Black Ops for the first time today. It's not often I come immediately to ballreviews to talk about a ball, but I had to with this one.

Layout is 50 x 5 1/4 x 40.
Tilt: 10
Rotation: 70
Revs: 375-400
Speed- 16-16.5 on screen (down lane)
Pap: 4 1/2 right, 3/4 up.

On my house's heavyish volume THS, this ball is something else. There wasn't much for midlane movement, but I could see the ball reading the midlanes well. Almost like it was setting itself up for a big turn at the breakpoint. I wouldn't quite say it was skid-snappy, but it gave me a really hard arcing backend motion. Plenty of recovery when I got it outside too far or too quickly. Hit and carry was impressive.

At the point, the only criticism I could possibly come up with, is referring to it as a "heavy oil" ball. It could be I think, with the right surface and layout, but out of the box I would say it's closer to medium-medium/heavy. That's looking for something I don't like about it though. To be honest, it's an excellent ball in my mind, and I'm really excited about throwing it more.

As a bonus, it's probably the best looking all black bowling ball I've ever seen :)

Nice video Matt. Glad the layout worked for you. PM me sometime if you have other asym concerns.

By the way, how is your rev rate measured? Not doubting it. Just curious.

Don't remember the exact math, but you count how many times it rotates in a certain period of time, then multiply by whatever you need to to make a minute. There are videos on YouTube of how to do it. You may need to put a piece of tape on the ball from your pap toward your fingers so you can see each revolution.

Oh I got ya. Measured it last season, ^^like that. Measured it a few times. It was always anywhere from 370-380. Think it's a bit off?

Its so hard to tell by watching. I've been estimated at 375 myself but it appears I'd be 400+ if you're 375.

Regardless the ball looks great and the layout worked so no need to overthink it

Ball above = Dream On. Ball is soooo sick.
Ball below = Dark Matter. Haven't even thrown one but it looks better.

I'm not too sure about the All In. There are cores I match up with, and ones I don't, and I don't think I match up with the Clockwork core.

Shout out for the Night Hawk SE and Encore. Night Hawk SE is so good.

Unreal... SRC core is one I match up with. I'll give a review of that one as soon as I can afford one lol.

I'm not so sure the Dark Matter is weaker than the black ops......my DM is definitely earlier than my black ops.  Ithe was not at all what I was expecting. I haven't thrown it much yet but early signs point to the s60 cover being underrated in strength.

@tdub36tjt: Thanks for the heads up. What would you suggest under the Black Ops? The Break Down? The All Night? or one of the Boosts?

The break down if you want a smoother backend the boost if you want a little bit more of a flippy type reaction. With your release the break down should still have plenty of backend. Its one of those balls that doesn't ever seem to over react but it does have trouble making the corner when I get deep sometimes. But I think the shot from your video has more backend reaction than the shots I'm typically on.

If the DM.is stronger than the Ops, I'm in trouble. :)

I highly doubt it, reviews have this ball fairly below the ops. I'm hearing more of a smoother than angular motion.

I've heard the opposite. Guess I'll have to try one!

I'll report back later this week but I couldn't even keep the DM on the lanedge last Thursday.  I was really confused by it myself.

Got one game of practice in on Sunday with the Black ops and had a really good reaction. Ball is at box finish and of course is very clean through the front of the lanes and made a very good move down lane off of the friction.

Last night I tried the ball in league. Still at box finish I started of the night standing a little further right and really had a great look with the ball. Little more friction then the week before which gave me a little room and not as much over under to worry about with the shined surface. Ball continued to clear the front of the lanes and down lane made a very strong move. Just a fun ball to throw and was exactly what I was hoping for with this ball and finally getting to try this core.

Moved about 6 board in by the start of the second game and continued to feed the ball right and watch it coming screaming back. By the third game the lanes started to change a little bit with some of the styles on the lane and started to have a smaller area to work with comfortably. By the 4th frame I switched to my Aura which has a little surface and was able to stay lined up to finish the game. I will probably wait one more week before adjusting the surface slightly to knock the shine off and give the ball a little more versatility compared to box finish.

Really liked what I saw from this ball last night. Glad I bought one to try out. Looking forward to also trying the Dream Big this upcoming week as well.
