For me it was the Ebonite Thunderbolt. Those glory days.(to much Bourbon) This is beginning to sound like Al Bundy and "Polk High"

Not to poke holes at ya Jess but the USBC approved ball list DOES NOT say what the cover was on the purple beast. It also states " (See rulebook, Chapter VII, "USBC Equipment Specifications" for any balls manufactured prior to January 1991.)"

Your sources have issues...

Columbia 300 BLUE DOT (from the 80's -- around 85-90 on the durometer.  NOT the crap ones that are being made now.)

"Your sources have issues"? One is the USBC and the other is a site that has no reason to be subversive in regards to the truth, and has the most complete database of bowling balls anywhere on the 'Net.

I wasn't trying to be malicious. But it will take something official from Columbia to convince me otherwise (and I'd prefer it come from the company). The manufacturing dates on the USBC ball list and the Bowling Ball Reviews Web site match up and you can go down one list and pull up corresponding pictures of those balls on BBR.

Even though theres nothing special about it I always scored very well with my old Black Beauty. Not the best ball ever made but when it came to sentimental value and playing down and in, that ball was awesome.

Just like rotomike, I can't "prove" the story about the beast, I can only confirm the rumor.

I bought the very first beast that came out.  The box said urethane on it and the ball acted very much like my other urethane balls at the time.

About a year or so later, I saw one in the shop that was new and the box said flexel, which is a mild reactive formulation.  When I asked about this, the shop guy told me that columbia had been experimenting with additives and had decided to make balls with it.

He also told me there were TWO SEPERATE types of black u-dots also, one straight urethane ( white lettering ) and one with flexel ( green lettering ), and NO, I am not refering to the budII, just a regular black u-dot with a flexel cover and green lettering..

I cannot "PROVE" that their was a purple urethane model beast that pre-dates the reactive one, but I know it for an absolute fact.  I also know for an absolute fact that there were two different types of black u-dots that were as different in their reactions as daylight and dark because I saw them thrown side by side several times.  The white lettered one was a smooth predictable urethane reaction, and the green lettered one was a definite skid/flip reaction.

As for MY favorite pre resin ball, it is a toss up between the original black turbo and the pink hammer.

Jess....

Once again let me say this louder so you can hear..
THE USBC SITE DOES NOT CLARIFY WHAT THE COVERSTOCK IS...

Also what make BBR an absolute source?  Someone entered the information into a database.

I will agree totally with Juggernault.  His experience is the same as mine and yes there was a black u dot with green writing as well...

the Columbia 300 reps word is not enough either.

In the words of Goldmember "I guess therre is no pleasing you"

I do think it is fun that we are having a discussion about urethane balls...  many fond memories.

Did not mean to start trouble, but I'm pretty sure my Beast is urethane, I cant see columbia only charging $99 bucks for a high performance ball back in the day. Yes there is something different about the teeth so you could tell the difference.

I'm with Rotomike anf Juggernaut on this one. Back in the day my pro shop guy showed me the two different Beasts. The Flexel version had "Twice the bite" on the box the other one didn't. I wanted the new one so bad but couldn't afford it.

And to answer the question: AMF Cobra, AMF Black Angle and Blue Hammer

All I'm doing is asking you to prove your statements. That's not an unreasonable request and you don't need to get bent out of shape over it.

EDIT: Also, in regards to the USBC list, here's what I'm using that for: I look up the ball on the USBC list, cross-reference it with the BBR list and see what I get. For every entry on the USBC list, there happens to be a corresponding ball on BBR. The one for the original Beast on USBC comes up "reactive" on BBR and has an identical approval date. That backs up personal observations of a reactive Beast being on store shelves at the time. Until Columbia says differently, that's what we have. Also, I would be intrigued to know how Columbia got a ball approved in 1992, then changed the cover formulation significantly and the ball was still approved afterwards. Given how anal retentive the USBC tends to be about equipment approval and specs, this would certainly qualify as a unique occurrence at the very least, not to have to re-submit the ball for approval.

Jess...

I am not bent at all.  I am actually enjoying our tilt here.  It proves to me that what you read on the internet is not actually true...

You are applying today's standards to what happened back in 1991.  Logical but not accurate.  As USBC has stated their list has potential errors and omissions around January 1991 which happens to be about the time the ball in question came out.

I saw the BBR entry....but anecdotal evidence from my rememberances, the Columbia 300 sales rep, the manager of my proshop, and last but not least other members on this site should hint to ya that you might be in error.

I love an intellectual discussion without all of the name calling that is in other threads.

cheers!!

Columbia Yello Dot
Columbia Wine U-Dot
Brunswick LT-48
Blue Hammer
