Smoke Free Bowling Alleys.....
« on: February 26, 2008, 04:13:05 AM »
I hear more and more about bowling alleys starting to go smoke free, some completely and others during certain hours.  However, here in Iowa they are debating a statewide ban on public smoking...I won't dish out all the details but this would include all bowling alleys.

So my question is, would you actually give up bowling if you couldn't smoke while you did it?

I remember the good old days of the old Buffalo Memorial Auditorium and seeing the smokers all near the ramps going up to the upper levels.  I rarely stayed in my seat between periods and I had to wash my clothes after seeing a Sabres game because of the smoke smell.  The first two years I bowled at Rose Bowl Lanes (R.I.P.) on Friday nights, they allowed smoking and I smelled like a chimney.  I did not want to sit in the setee area.  I am pleased that smoking is now banned in public places in New York.

I wish I had Chuck Norris with me last night.  He would have made sure that 9 pin went down for my first 300 game.

Why should public places be smoke free? Its the public. Why not make a law that says kids have to be on leashes.. They keep taking away our rights as people. It is the customers option to decide if they want to go in there. If businesses are smart enough they will make a smoke free section so they can do something about it. The business isnt forcing you to go in there. I work in a bowling alley and I know what it is like and there are ways to help this situation and not take away a persons right.

they should be smoke free because people want them to be, its harmful for everybodys helth, the best thing ive heard in forever is when they said that if you smoke in a car with kids there going to try and make that child abuse GO GOVERMENT!!!!!!

NY completely smoke free has made for cleaner air but longer bowling time because bowlers are required to leave the bowling center to smoke.  This has become a problem for me because people go out and become engaged in conversations with other smokers and loose track of time causing delays. I wish they would allow smoking in a designated area where the bowlers can keep track of their turn.  My bowling center is 60 lanes and people can only see a handful from the door. I am a casual drinker and would not mind allowing them to smoke in the bar area, although it is against state law.

I wish Virginia would go smoke free for bowling centers.  I would enjoy not having my clothes and hair not smell like smoke after a night league. It would also be a relief on my lungs not to be exposed to second hand smoke.

It would probably depend on the smoker. If they were there because they really loved to bowl and the competition involved, they would most likely stay and go outside. If they were they more for a social and intertainment experience, they would probably find something else to do. But hey, it's not like we have a decline in league membership, I say lets drive as many out as we can.

New Mexico went smoke-free in all public places last June.  I'm a smoker, but I love the smoke-free atmosphere while bowling.  The night actually goes faster in some cases, because people don't stop for that last drag before they get on the lanes for their shot.  If we're bowling another team that has smokers, we might take a community break between games, but for the most part we just keep rolling along.

One thing I found amusing after the change.  We bowl in a house with wood lanes and approaches.  The approaches get a deep cleaning prior to the New Mexico Open (big scratch tournament) every August.  This year, the approaches were like ice for about six weeks after, and all the bowlers were complaining about how slippery they were.  I just laughed and told them they needed to have an after-hours smoking party in the building to get those tar and nicotine deposits back on the approaches to tackify them a bit.

I smoke cigars while I bowl, but if I couldn't it wouldn't keep me from bowling.  I really don't care either way.  I'm used to going home smelling like smoke, whether I have a cigar or not.  If it does get banned, I just hope it's because the bowling alley made the decision, and not the government.

S.Carolina has only one smoke free house that I'm aware of (city ord) and the military bases are smoke free or have smoking rooms. Wish they would all go, if smoking loses a bowler I'm willing to bet you gain 2 who are not coming because of the bar like atmosphere. If someone can't wait 2 1/2 hours to ingest the poison they need to reassess their priorities. Our 24 lane hose is so small you can't get away from the smokers if you try, only the pit area is off limits but you can't keep the smoke from drifting in.

Here in SC at our place we have smokers...AND LOTS OF THEM. Some nights isn't too bad like on monday because the time I go theres only a PBA league going on which is what I'm in. Its very small with little amount of people and no one smokes but on some nights like Sat. when we have tournaments, you just about have to feel your way around through the smoke because you can't see 10 ft in front of your face. (not really but it sounds good )

Anyways I wish they would ban it here. I hate smokers, most of them are very inconsiderate. Just because you want to die early doesn't mean I want to. I swear I'm going to die from lung cancer just from going to the bowling alley! lol

Since January 2008, German bowling alleys are smoke-free by law, too. What a great improvement! Some smokers were complaining, but they comply and simply have to leave the alley to smoke. I highly appreciate the development.

I can't wait until PA passes the smoking ban...it was close last year but didn't pass.  The proprietor at our house has started remodeling in anticipation of the ban being put into effect.  I can't stand returning home after bowling leagues Monday night...I go straight to the laundry room and put everything I had on directly into the washer and start the load.  We have a few blow hards in our league who state they will leave if the ban goes into effect, but I think when push comes to shove...they love bowling more than smoking, but if they don't...we'll find replacements.

Our center is smoke free not by law , its there rule. The bowlers who do smoke just go right outside door and smoke. It makes the air in the bowling center a whole lot cleaner and I don't think anyone has quit due to not being able to smoke

Well here in Michigan they are working (or were) on doing the smoking ban.  I am a smoker, and tend to smoke more when I bowl.

That being said, if they said no more smoking, I wouldn't quit the game.  There is one alley right down the street from my house that does not allow smoking in the bowling area, only in the bar, I don't bowl there, but not because of that.

I really don't care either way, but for all the non smokers out there preaching the ways, how would you feel if the government said, you are not allowed to drink in public places, eat in public places, or heck what if the government told you...because we don't agree with it, there will no longer be any type of talking allowed in any public forum?

I know these all sound like ridiculous statements and would never happen, but think about it for a second....how would that make you feel?  I thought we lived in the land of the free...not the land of hi we're the government and we'll tell you what to do based on what we believe, because that is how we roll.

Yes smoking stinks, and yes it is a bad habit, and yes it is not good for your health, or the health of a person standing next to you, but that cheeseburger you just got from the grill with onions....it stinks....it's not good for you, and the way you eat it makes me want to vomit....so I feel you should not be able to eat.  Doesn't make a lot of sense does it?

That beer looks refreshing, but because there was a car accident involving alcohol once...no more...it's not safe for you and it's not safe for me...so that's banned too.

Take away the smoking....that's fine....true bowlers will bowl anyways, but stop and think a minute about how ridiculous this country has become with the government telling us what we can and can't do......
