Smoke Free Bowling Alleys.....
« on: February 26, 2008, 04:13:05 AM »
I hear more and more about bowling alleys starting to go smoke free, some completely and others during certain hours.  However, here in Iowa they are debating a statewide ban on public smoking...I won't dish out all the details but this would include all bowling alleys.

So my question is, would you actually give up bowling if you couldn't smoke while you did it?

Normally I would say that banning smoking in public places is wrong because its your life, and your body, and if you wan't to smoke you have the right too, however smoking effects other people. Your rights stop where another persons rights begin.

Spider I'm not taking what you say literally.  I'm just saying there really isn't much to the other side of the discussion.  If a smoker tries to use the food thing as an example I would tell him to eat his cigarettes instead of smoke them.  My response wasn't directed to you personally but "the other side" of the discussion.  It's hard to argue that comparing eating (something you need to stay alive) to smoking (something that you need to trigger cancer) isn't just plain stupid.

Illinois went smoke free in public this January.  This has been the greatest thing that happened to the bowling league night.  I can breathe while I bowl & my clothes, hair & truck don't stink that one night anymore from it either.  Now my wife waits up for me more often, too, cause I don't smell like an ashtray anymore.

Well, this is the United States, and a democracy says majority rules. Last I saw, only about 30% of people smoke, so there you go.

here in louisiana they are smoke free, but we have a bar in our local house where people can go smoke...sometimes we have to wait for people who are up to bowl but it is still better than them smoking around me...and our bars are nonsmoking as well..if now we could get rid of the smoke in casinos(where i work) life would be great...

Why should public places be smoke free? Its the public. Why not make a law that says kids have to be on leashes.. They keep taking away our rights as people. It is the customers option to decide if they want to go in there. If businesses are smart enough they will make a smoke free section so they can do something about it. The business isnt forcing you to go in there. I work in a bowling alley and I know what it is like and there are ways to help this situation and not take away a persons right.

I agree with "Lane1bwler300". I have never smoked, and while I prefer not to smell like an ashtray, I don't like the "big-brother" mentality that is fueling the smoking bans.

Today it's smoking. Tomorrow it will be gum-chewing, or loud talking, or eating messy chees-fries.

Better to just make smoking illegal. At least you would have to get a majority vote for that, rather than some arbitrary decision by lawmakers responding to the "squeakier wheels"... aka the vocal non-smoking public.

Again... I am a non-smoker, do not approve of smoking, prefer when people don;t smoke, and do not allow it in my car. But in public places...so long as it is a legal activity, I strongly disagree with the bans being imposed on smokers.

My 2 cents.

Its not an option in CA.  You don't smoke in any public building.  Some towns you don't smoke in public period, not in your car, not on the sidewalk etc.......

When this first was instigated there was a big stiff about it.  An immediate decline in bowling.  But now many many years later, the numbers have come back up.  They are not at the same level as the "hey day" of bowling, but the number rebounded.  People that wanted to bowl still bowled.

I'd be happy if they just made everyone smoke in the bar. Even though it would take longer to bowl, I much rather wait a few extra minutes to bowl then smell like smoke. Just have to compromise on something and that would be great with me.

i went to the pba pepsi championship in omaha several weeks ago and the brand new thunder-alley is smoke free all the time. the state of nebraska is deciding whether or not to make the state smoke free. this is something that needs to happen everywhere.

I used to smoke. Even then, sometimes the bowling centers in Reno and Carson City got too smoky for my taste. I couldn't stand it.

I quit when I moved back to Oregon. When I first got back here, most centers allowed smoking in the center - at least in the bar, most allowed in the whole center.
Not very long ago they limited it to the bars, smoking rooms, and lottery rooms. Makes it great for the rest of the center, but if I walk into the bar, I gag. And the house that has a smoking room has a window - I refer to the smokers sitting behind the glass as the monkeys.

There is one center in town that is entirely non-smoking. None in the bar, or anywhere else. According to the manager - the anti smoking rules only drive the smokers to hang out in front of the place and make the center look bad. He does have a point.

CA has been smoke free for so long I am always surprised when I bowl in another state and people are smoking.

What is funny when it was all being debated, many said they would quit bowling if they couldn't smoke while bowling.  I personally know a few who quit for a season and came back.  I also know bowlers who had quit and returned when we did go smoke-free.
